Help prioritizing for my website please!

I got really bogged down during this recent holiday season due to some personal dilemmas. I am having a bit of trouble finding the motivation to start working on my website again. Its amazing how lazy a two week break can make your mind. On top of this, I am still lost when it comes to what I should be doing first.

Before my break I was doing some back-link building. I didn't get too much done, but I have noticed myself ranking in the double digits for many of my keywords. As a first question: Which keywords should I focus on? I have found three-word, four-word, and five-word long all with low competition. Many of them encompassing similar results. For example, I was selling something called "Master Dog" I'd see keywords "master dog review" and "master dog book review". Which one would I pick?

Of course, as a second question: Should I be back-linking yet? I really don't know if my monetization efforts are appropriate (couple of square ad's + call to action). Furthermore, I don't even know if my articles are rich enough to convert a sale. I am considering hiring an E-lancer to beef up some of my articles, but I don't know if that is a wise investment at this early stage. How do you guys even know if your articles are "good enough"?

Thirdly: Should I be writing more articles? I still have a fat list of potential keywords that I believe are worthwhile based on my research. My question is, should I simply put back-linking aside and continue writing articles. On top of that, Should I be re-writing those articles as well and submitting them to my Squidoo page?

Sorry for the sporadic questions. Hopefully you can catch them all. Fundamentally, I think my issue is one of prioritization. I am seeing all of these mountains in the distance and IDK which one to climb first. I appreciate any help anyone has to offer. If you could try to tackle each of my questions, that would be great. I am sure you can see how confused I am based on my writing. THANKS!

Hmm, well let me see if I can chime in on one or two of these for you.

First off, typically to get the ball rolling for yourself that fastest, as far as SEO traffic anyhow, then, you should be trying to rank for the "easiest to rank terms" at the start.

The terms that are harder to rank, will take a while longer anyhow. If you can start to see a bit of traffic from some of your terms ASAP, it may help to give you a bit of confidence to press on.

Backlinking yet? Yes, of course. You can start backlinking as soon as possible. Just be sure you are doing it in a natural way, gradually spread out over time. Velocity of links is very important. In other words, don't get 10 one day...forget about that page for a while..and then all of a sudden get 150 in a day...forget about it for a while..then do the same.

Spread them out evenly each day or couple of days which would indicate natural growth.

As for your ads and call to actions being appropriate...well typically speaking you'll get very low click through on banners anyhow.

They're ok to have, but don't expect them to do the selling for you. Your articles..haven't seen them, couldn't tell you if they're appropriate or not.

It sounds like you are quite unsure of yourself and your abilities when it comes to writing. That's fine, most people are in the beginning.

However, I think you may be wise to take a good course on article writing, and perhaps get your hands on something discussing the art of writing good pre-sells.

I know that doesn't answer all of your questions, but, hope it helps a bit.

    Cheers

Thanks, I appreciate the input. I would still love it if a few more people could chime in. Any help is appreciated.

What exactly would you consider an "easy to rank term"? If, for example, I was naturally ranking 99th for a certain term, would that term be considered easy to rank for?

Focus on Easy to rank for terms with good amounts of organic search traffic... you can get a free account at hrefs.com, go to the seo section and type in your domain to see what keywords you already rank for... Don't worry about the # of words in the phrase worry about the ability to rank them... Take baby steps its like building a Skyscraper, Blueprints, foundation, steel fabrication...walls... and one floor at a time...

You can use a tool called SEO PRESSOR if your using wordpress... You want to get a 100% score on the Article and make sure its over 1100 words... the score is important 99% is not good enough... Once it indexs pour on the off page SEO with Backlinks... I outsource mine...but its done the way i want it to be done...

Thirdly: Should I be writing more articles? I still have a fat list of potential keywords that I believe are worthwhile based on my research. We write 2 articles per keyword phrase... wait 30 days... look at the serps then determine how much Off Page SEO to pour the gas on... The recipe is simple if you know the steps...

Lastly i want to say... Get good at wordpress sites and get SUPERIOR at ON PAGE SEO and OFF PAGE SEO... Learn those items and you can write your own ticket in the IM world.... Your on the right track keep up the good work...NO MORE VACATIONS... Now its time for MASSIVE ACTION!!

    To Your Continued Success,

Excellent advice from ripperdav and BrashImpact. Following a publishing routine has helped me stay on track even after a break. Once you have a pattern to follow, you can pick it back up anytime.

For me, I write a post, go to ping.fm and submit a link to my new post and I bookmark the post to about 10 bookmarking sites. The ping.fm and bookmarking steps are to help with indexing and to get some initial backlinks pointing to the page even though these will be low quality backlinks.

After every 5 posts, I make some very minor modifications to the posts to turn them into articles for article directories (I just change up the first sentence or two and write as enticing a bio box as I can) and submit the articles to a number of article directories.

I write 5 more posts (ping.fm and bookmarking after each one) and then do the article cycle again.

After every 10 posts, I analyze my rankings and site performance looking for the post that seems to be getting the most traffic/sales and is not yet ranking #1-2 in Google. That post will get some additional backlinking over the course of a week or so - Squidoo lenses, Hubpages, blog commenting, outsourced backlinking packages.

Then I repeat the cycle again, adding another 5 posts, then another 5, then singling out one for more attention. Before you know it, you have a site with a lot of content and you're building backlinks and working on your overall rankings to get your best content producing better and better results.

I'm sure everyone's "publishing routine" is different but you can start by laying one out for yourself and then tweaking the strategy so it suits you and your niche.

    Good luck!
