Hey guys,

I hope you are well.

This is a basic question but it is an important one! I did a search on it and got differing opinions.

I ran adwords for a few months to a test site to see if there is any demand for the product I am putting together (information products for aspiring DJs).

The test went well and now I am looking to purchase the main umbrella URL that will be used for my sales, video and content pages.

My question is this: how should I choose this URL?

I figured that I should take my top performing (top impressions and CTR) keywords and put them together in a URL.

My top performing DJ terms in order of impressions and clicks are:

Learn to mix
DJ Tutorial
DJ Tips
Learn How To DJ
Dj Lessons
Become a DJ

All of these terms have a 1.5 - 3% CTR.

So my logic says that my URL should be "LearnHowToDjMix.com" or something similar.

The marketer half of me though says to use a URL that speaks more to the need that my products fulfill. DJs don't really want to learn how to mix....the mixing (becoming a DJ) is just a medium for having more status, getting hot girls, making money, getting the VIP lifestyle, traveling the world etc.

So should I be using a URL that is more like DJRockstarLifestyle.com ?

Any thoughts and feedback are appreciated!

~Sean

    Hi seanG,

Choosing the domain name is the most important part in online business. The domain name should be more relevant to your product.

There is a great site for getting domain name ideas called domainsbot.com You can get better ideas by entering the keywords relevant to your product & get available domain names for free of cost.

if possible, use a keyword, yes.

But please use a short and memorable name instead of something like "learnhowtodjmix.com" (ok, this one would still be "ok")...but i would chose something like "DJMixing" or "becomeadj", "howtodj" or something like that. Little shorter.

Ditto, and register the other domains and put an article on each one with a link at the end to your main site.

I found one that uses important keywords, it speaks of the benefits, it is relatively short and it is relatively catchy:

        LearnProDjSecrets.com

Learn and DJ are collectively in all of my top 10 terms. Pro and secrets are terms relating to my USP.

I would love to drop the "Learn" to leave it as ProDjSecrets.com but it is the top word according to my adwords testing...

LearnProDjSecrets.com would be easy for you to target for Adsense (or Adwords) and obtain a good quality score. It is also descriptive enough to indicate the nature of your site and it would appeal to the needs of those who are interested in this subject.

As well, it is a product-based term and would allow you to prepare your own ebook or course (a future development opportunity) and have a meaningful title.

          Go for it!

Congrats! Half the battle is in the execution of an idea.

There's a cool theme called "DJ wild" that would perfect for your niche.

              Best of luck!

Short, easy to remember domain names that people can associate with your product or service is the way to go.

I have never been a fan of stuffing keywords into a domain if it ends up being to long. Almost makes word of mouth referrals impossible - who's going to remember the domain?

i would argue against the notion that "the domain name is the most important part of your business" but i guess it is quite important. if youre just trying to optimize your site for adwords then stuffing keywords will do wonders, but if you want this site to transcend simple ppc systems then go with short, memorable

Keywords in your URL will help lower the cost of Adwords clicks. I recommend including it in a way that doesn't look ridiculous. Of the URL's you mentioned, I would personally run with the following...

    learnhowtodj

I suspect this URLs will perform well if formatted properly in the Ad.

    LearnHowtoDJ.com, etc.

No hyphens. Only .coms and .orgs will rank well in my past experience. Anything else is an uphill battle.

If you are in the business for years and years and want to develop a brand, go for a branded domain name and disregard the keywords.

If you are going to mainly rely on PPC and SEO to get traffic and brand name positioning is not that important, most definitely have a keyword-rich domain name. As somebody pointed out, your CPC will be much less (higher Quality Score) and also in terms of SEO you will have a huge advantage. Domains that contain keywords rank much better, like 25% better in Google and WAY better in MSN search and Yahoo.

Thanks for all of your replies guys!

      Hugely appreciated!

My strongest key word (highest searched and one of the highest converting) is "Learn To Mix".

All of my other terms revolve around the word DJ so:

      LearnToDjMix.com

      Thoughts?

Short, top keywords and somewhat catchy...

If "Djtips" is available, i'd do that one. Or "becomeadj" even know it is not at the top of your list. If you want to move away from just those keywords, how about something like DJCashMachine or DJGold (I assume that may be gone by now - anything with -gold is tough to get)

It might also be useful to use the Google AdWords tools with Exact Search selected and see what type of keyword suggestions they come up with based upon your existing list of keywords. With their results, you can export the whole job to CSV and use Excel to figure out the highest paying CPC keywords that have the most consistent traffic, the highest search volume, and the lowest competition. In other words, it could be helpful to see what keywords you could be earning from, and compare them to the ones you already are earning from.
