Have a quality freebie to offer through a squeezepage.

Then you will need traffic to the squeezepage:

    1. Traffic by SEO.
    2. Traffic by PPC.
    3. Traffic by offering the freebie as a WSO.
    4. Through your signature on forums
    5. Order soloads
    6. Do adswaps

my 2 cents It does take some time but these are the ways to build a big list but quality in my opinion is more important than the number of people on your list.

      Hi Roan,
I agree. Great succinct answer. The "Gem" is that you keep it simple. That's what it is.
      Nothing more. Well done.

  • Hi, Michael and Roan !

Let's not forget about "giveaways" - great way to get "numbers"; but as you said, Roan, "quality" is something altogether different. With a "numbers" list, it takes time to 'win them over' (to get to know like and trust you enough) for them to buy from you.

My first giveaway was at Christmas time some years ago - I got 2,300 on my list in just a few days (3,200 if you count 'duplicates'). Unfortunately, at that time I was the newbiest newbie there could be.

List building is 'easy';... list 'cultivating' is an art

    Best wishes, Michael !

      Cheers Hal!

What do you mean with giveaways? I think its the same as what I meant with a freebie? That's alot! 2300! What was it exactly? (if you don't mind me asking?)

If you're starting from scratch, you could do your niche research, pick a niche, and find a PLR product- make it yours (customize)- and offer that as your freebie. Then start driving traffic to your squeeze page and also work on your own product. That should save you a few days off the bat.

Again if you're starting from scratch, the fastest ways to get traffic would be through paid advertising. Solo ads, PPC, etc.

Set up a few autoresponders that provide nothing but value. Then get working on your product or find an affiliate product to offer and incorporate that into your autoresponder series.

Then for longer-term traffic you can start a blog, write guest blog posts on other blogs, set up social media accounts, article marketing, video marketing, podcasts, participate in forums, the list goes on..

yes alot of people "live off their list" so to speak. If you have a big enough list and have enough buyers then you will be able to have a good income from your list.

Solo ads and ad swaps are probably the fastest ways of generating leads, but also the most expensive in my experience.

the best people added to you list is always going to be the ones that buy your product as they are known buyers!

so creating products gets you sales from currents subs plus new subs! The more you create the faster it grows

Totally agree with this. My fitness blog list currently has 1,268 people on it and they all get on it by signing up for a free fitness course. My PLR site has 200 people on it and around half of these are customers. The PLR list gets me a lot more sales than the fitness blog list even though it's a lot smaller.

What are some tips that you guys have for myself where i have an established blog I believe, great eye appeal, alright traffic, but have the tiniest list. I wrote an ebook and give it for free but lack people wanting to opt in. Any suggestions?

Is the main rule of thumb the more traffic the more opt in?

When I started my fitness blog, the squeeze page and blog were completely separate and I got a lot more sign ups. I later decided to combine the two because building my list wasn't my main focus and I wanted everything in one central location.

However, if your main goal is for people to sign up for your list then this needs to be the only option on the page. If you have the sign up form on the blog there are too many other options that can distract them from signing up. They could click an ad, they could click an article that catches their eye, they could start browsing through the links in your menus, they could click through to your Facebook or Twitter etc.

      Hope this helps,

      Tom

Thanks for the feedback. Seems like list building is quite a job to do but i know if you leverage correctly by building a solid relationship there is good money to be made.
I must agree with you though, i think one problem of mine is there are to many options visitors can choose from on my blog.

Yeah it's not easy but when you get it right it can be very lucrative.

One other thing I've never tried but I believe works quite well is to put an opt in at the bottom of each post. Rusty Moore (one of my favourite fitness bloggers) does this on his Fitness Black Book blog. You can see an example of it at the bottom of his post that I have linked to below...

Avoiding the Sun to Avoid Skin Cancer? Recent Studies Challenge That Advice. | Fitness Black Book

Another thing that Rusty does to build his list is give away a free course on his Facebook page. He's got over 12,900 fans so I imagine that's working quite well for him too .

I'd also listen to what a few other Warriors on this thread are saying about list conversion. List size isn't the be all and end all. A list of 100 people that converts at 10% is just as valuable as a list of 1,000 people that convert at 1%.

When it comes to increasing your conversion I'd say John's pretty much got it spot on. The only thing I would add is that getting them on your list as buyers (get them to buy something, then get them on your list as part of the buying process) is a great way to increase conversions too...

Hardly anyone does this, but it's highly effective. This is relationship marketing.... so relate to them. Talk to them like they're friends and look out for their interests like you would someone you care about.

It really is that easy. It amazes me how few email marketers get this. It's just human nature and treating people like you'd hope to be treated.

I have tried the giveaways and they did not do well at all. I had all unique products and I had more sign ups through organic traffic than I did from the giveaway. I did do a giveaway once and I did get thousands of sign ups. I think I will do another giveaway as the site owner.

I agree with Zeus66, get to know your list. Mix in offers/upsells and good advice or whatever is relevant to how you got them in the first place.

Traffic will certainly help opt-ins but don't forget it's often the conversion to opt-in that is the problem, i.e- if your capture page/ auto-responder isn't well thought out or placed you will have a hard time.

Heavy advertising. PPC, Google content network, ezine advertising, high traffic website advertising, joint ventures, starting your own affiliate program, and autoresponder.

When doing PPC, be prepared to pay alot for certain keywords. On the flip of that, use a keyword tool like Worktracker or Keyword Discovery to come up with thousands of keywords that folks are searching for each month.

One of the best ways to increase your list is by improving upon what you have. This is something that I shared with another user in another thread.

So this may be something you may have already read.

I highly recommend you to check out the site critiques done by Derek Halpern. He has some really great advice on how to rapidly increase your leads. You can find his website at Online Marketing Strategy – Social Triggers

Here is one of his critiques.

Few of the best advises for anyone who is trying to Build a Good List is:
      • Always drive all your traffic to your squeeze page and nothing else. Test and tweak your squeeze page to get better conversions. This gives the highest ROI for all the efforts we put into driving traffic.
      • Create your own product and run an affiliate program of your own. There is no other better form of list building method than this. Others do all the job for you as you reap the sweet rewards!!
      • Try to get get as many a buyers to the list by offering very low front end products. A WSO is one of the best ways to get buyers into your list. Its better to have a list of 1000 buyers than to have 10,000 freebie seekers in your list.
      • Try to build a good & solid rapport with your subscribers. Your relationship is the key in this. Try to build your personal branding. Videos are a very good way to register yourself in the minds of your subscribers, which is very important. Whether your emails are opened or not, depends a lot on the image they have about you in their mind. If you look like someone whom they can trust upon, they will read your mails and respond to your recommendations.
      • Always try to give them some massive value on a regular basis. Your offers should look more like recommendation, than sales pitches. Most of the time, we all run away from salesman, don't we? So become a trusted friend rather than a sales person. Your credibility plays a major role here. Never ever recommend anything that you don't believe in. make sure its a good product and its can serve their purpose. They should have the impression that you are here to help them, and to serve their interest. Be genuine with your approach. It surely comes across.
      • Free traffic generation methods like SEO, Forum Marketing, Social Media and Blogging are pretty good. But if you want fast results, go for paid traffic methods like Solo ads, Ezine ads, PPC, Facebook ads etc. But before you go for the paid forms, make sure you know your numbers. Get your conversion in place before you send paid traffic to a page.
"Help people get what they want, and you will get more of what you want." Make this your Business Mantra. It really does work!!

      Hope this helps!!

      Thanks and Regards

Building a list that buys is the most important aspect. The list may not be huge by doing this, but you know for a fact they are buyers.

E.g When you get your potential customer onto your squeeze page, instead of giving something away, charge them a small fee for it, say $1-3. This gives perceived value to the item you're offering.
I know some will say that a $1-3 product may be perceived as low quality, but people who are interested will see it as a bargain. In fact, you could say that this item is normally valued at $XX but for our readers etc, it is a special and only available at this price from this site for a limited time.

What this does is weed out the freebie searchers from the buyers. I know who I want on my list, It's the people who have already paid for something. They are much more likely to purchase an offer that I make to them in the future.
It's pointless to have thousands of people on your list and only a small percentage is positively responsive to your offer.

You need to build a relationship with them once they are on your list. Give them more valuable content free of charge until it's time to monetize. Because these people have already paid for information from you, how delighted do you think they will feel when you give them more relevant quality content for absolutely nothing?
They will love you for it and will start to trust and see you as someone who offers value.

Apart from that, if you already have a large list of people on your list and only a small percent are buyer's, then analyze over a couple of offerings to confirm who is a buyer and who isn't. Then it is a matter of dropping those non buyers off the list and keep the cream of the crop.

    Anyway, that's my 2 cents...

Great information to get started from the bottom, thank you for your time.

Is there any advice about buying targeted mailing lists and going from there to get people to your site and then maybe on your opt-in list?
