Squeeze Page Opt-In: Name & Email, or Email only? Any opinions?

Hey warriors,

If you were setting up another/new squeeze page, would you look for both the name and email address or just have an email opt-in box only.

At the moment, I just have the email opt-in but am thinking of changing it to get a name also so I can personalise my autoresponder messages - or does it really matter?

Would love to hear some opinions on this one...

    Hey Justin,

    Test test and test.

I've switched to email only because it seems to work better......I think the less information you ask for the more likely they are to subscribe.

    Regards

Do a split-test and track all the way through to sales
to determine which option works best for you and your
      list.

Asking for e-mail only, usually leads to more opt-ins so
      you build a bigger list.

For a prospect list, I tend to ask for e-mail only. I'll get
their full name later once they buy something and move
onto the more important buyer's list anyways.

      Dedicated to mutual success,

Yup Split Test! Always gives you the answer. If you dont want to split test then just go for email as the safer option.

'Split Test' is also the only time those 2 words should be used in the same sentence!

I prefer, when getting on a squeeze page, to only enter my email.
I find it quite uncomfortable to receive an email with my name in it or in the headline.

Kind of like I KNOW they are using it to create a more personal feeling so it kind of backfires. Also, people that know me don't use my name in the headline and rarely in the body of the message so I feel it's unnatural to me.

    Be happy, be successul,

less work from the user meand more option , but if you are planning on getting your auto responders read like more personally focused then name will help get that across.

either way split testing is the way to go as mentioned above !!

Good point about having your emails read personally. Adding the name field will cretainly do this.

Thanks for all the advice guys - there seems to be general consensus to go with email only which is what I am doing.
Will give it a try for a few weeks then split test with both options.

    Appreciate the responses...

Less is best...but I don't think there is a difference between 1 or 2 fields. So I prefer the name.

I generally ask for only the email as the personalization trick no longer works as effectively as before, especially in the IM niche. It used to work great 5 years ago but not today.

I also ask for the email only, and build a bigger list.

I have tested, in some of my niches. It's not quick or easy to test, because building a bigger list in itself doesn't necessarily prove that it's the right thing to do. (I built bigger lists with pure squeeze pages, too, but they still worked out badly for me overall, because different people opted in to them, who didn't buy as much).

One thing's for sure, though: if I did collect first names as well (as I used to in a couple of niches when I first started) I certainly wouldn't be using them as a salutation in my autoresponder emails, because too many people think it makes you sound like an insurance salesman, and I think I lose far more than I gain from that. People aren't stupid anyway: they know it's only an "automated trick". I think it makes you look worse, rather than better, myself. I'm saying that mostly on the basis of customer feedback, really: I don't really mind either way, but my customers don't like it.

I have close to 100 squeeze pages.

    I've tested a lot.

For me...Name & Email has worked best in testing across many niches.

When I need more information. I ALWAYS ask for it on page 2. So I go "Name & Email" on page 1. And, if needed, maybe some fields and drop down windows in a form on page 2.

Plus...getting name allows you to personalize future emails to the prospect.

I always go for email only if it's a squeeze page for a free offer. Why put up additional barrier to signup? Asking for name will only reduce sign-ups. And think about this. A lot of people will simply enter a junk name anyway. So if you're going to address them by their name in your emails, you might end up addressing them as 'Hi FakeName' or something weird like that.

The exception is when you ask them to sign up AFTER they've bought from you. Then you can ask for name and email. At this point, there's no reason for them to put in a fake name.

    Good question.
I think I agree with everyone else. Do a split test to find the answer.

Think you got your answer Justin, just carry out some split tests, maybe then you'll get a better understanding, or if you have a blog, set up a poll and ask your visitors to vote.

    Hope this helps.

Like my fellow warriors say: Test. However in my experience, you would get more optins with just the email field. If the quality of leads are basically the same, and you can get an extra 10% or more, I'll go for the highest numbers. If you have a strong backend, selling high end products, one those leads can convert into your high end products.

I don't know why some marketers feel I have to enter my name. It's just more for me to type and I'm lazy, and I don't feel emails sent with my name are more personal because I know my name is just inserted automatically just as the names of everyone else on the list.

As people have already said, test both and see what works for you. I personally just ask for the email address at this point. I am on many email lists myself and when people use my name in the emails it does not make me feel like they have a better relationship with me so I don't bother requiring my subscribers to enter their name.

Try both, especially for mobile. However, ALWAYS do double optin.

Don't ask for the name. Like seriously, how many of your friends email you saying something like "Hello yourname!" ? Or at least around here no one does that. I also think it feels kind of weird to have someone you don't know calling you with your name.

Oh and if your in the IM niche, using the name is completely useless and might even be bad.
