I did some poking around today and noticed that some of my sites share the same ip address of some sites I do not own. Is this a bad sign? Please excuse my ignorance.

Most of us are probably using those $5 - $9 shared hosting accounts that can put dozens, hundreds or even thousands of sites on a single server, often these are so called unlimited accounts competitive spec inflation forced the hosts to adopt.

The down sides include low server performance, more server down time causes by some site code crashing/overloading the processor, and a higher chance of a neighbor's activities getting your IP black listed, I can't use a contact email form on one account because my email internet provider has black listed it.

There are reverse IP service on the web that can show you the other sites sharing your IP address, it's really scary if you find you are sharing a server with some domain speculator, I have seen something like 1 million names on a single IP address, big name hosts can be equally guilty in overloading their servers at times.

I made a quick unscientific study, searching for "This site is hosted by Hostgator" sort of references, looking up the first found sites in a reverse IP tool. These found sites are likely to be higher ranking more established sites, and IPs hosting larger numbersof of sites are more likely to be encountered.

It's assumed that each IP address represents a different server, though the architecture of hosting centers may vary.

    Hostgator
    174.120.169.232 - IP hosts 2 sites
    69.56.192.148 - IP hosts 21
    174.132.167.189 - IP hosts 75
    174.120.169.221 - IP hosts 103

    173.192.107.97 - IP hosts 543

    Dreamhost
    173.236.135.165 - IP hosts 9
    173.236.139.92 - IP hosts 10
    173.236.130.230 - IP hosts 18
    69.163.139.222 - IP hosts 22
    173.236.189.97 - IP hosts 22
    69.163.231.154 - IP hosts 25
    173.236.131.68 - IP hosts 30
    67.205.2.170 - IP hosts 32
    173.236.131.191 - IP hosts 37
    75.119.210.6 - IP hosts 50

I can testify that even a relatively small number of domains on a Dreamhost account will be spread over multiple IP addresses along with other accounts' sites.

Yea made a quick trip over to wikipedia
name-based virtual hosting is what is going on I assume and it's perfectly normal. However doesn't seem to be compatible with https
      and
If file permissions have been improperly configured, then shared file systems might give other (compromised) users or processes system-wide access to these files.
