Finding Keywords Without Google Places or Major Authority Site

For the last week or so i have been doing keyword research like a mad man. Im finding it extremely hard to find keywords. I was looking at Amazon affiliate sites and website rental. What im noticing is everytime i find a product or keyword that has any exact matches on google keyword tool, that when you search for that keyword on google, you either get the amazon listing itself, another set of major stores selling the item, or it pulls up the Google Places 7 box.

With all these changes google has made, are these 2 business models going to be dead?

    I agree it's really tough to find niches or keywords that don't already have lots of authority sites or local listings. So many people are doing Google Places optimization and local SEO that local listing tend to dominate these days.

    The problem i had in my area which is very populated and around a major city, ive talked to businesses about doing SEO for them. 99% of the businesses i have talked to just dont get SEO yet or really think it makes a difference for them. So ive tried looking for other ways such as site rental but ive built sites and can get them to rank right below the google places listing, but technically their still ahead of me because they have a google places listing and i dont because i dont have a place to register.
