Filesonic Disables File Sharing and Uploaded.to Blocks US Visitors

Be interesting to see how many upload sites are left standing after the MegaUpload takedown.

Filesonic has disabled file sharing altogether and Uploaded.to has blocked all US visitors. Neither of them have servers on US soil.

MegaUpload effect: FileSonic drops file sharing, Uploaded.to drops the US

This could cause problems for most file sharing sites. I use dropbox alot and would have issues if they stopped serving the US. I think the file sharing site would need to be all password protected with some software checking uploads for content or just not allow movies to be uploaded.

The article I read about Filesonic says that they do have some software file checking capabilities. Nevertheless, they have disabled sharing of files completely.

      Eric,

Dropbox is a whole other animal entirely. In their financial model, downloads are an expense. The money is made from paid access to extra storage.

Do they even have external ads attached to links for shared files?

Pirates will, as a rule, pay for extra download access. Not for extra storage space, unless there's an offsetting payment for popular downloads.

You could pirate files through Dropbox, but that is clearly not the intent of the system, and it's not something even remotely suggested by their marketing. I'd be very surprised if it was any noticeable percentage of their overall use.

Let's hope not. It would be just one more example of valuable services being made more expensive and/or less useful by digital parasites.

Guess the government was waiting for SOPA to pass before going after these sites; but when it became clear that it wouldn't pass, they just did it anyway. So, why do they need SOPA? Seems like they can do this anyway. SOPA would have been a nice justification for them.

I think these corporate bafoons need to learn how to harness this technology like Steve Jobs did. People overall are attracted to convenience. People are not thieves at heart, but if you make it easier for someone to take something rather than pay for it, then many people will just take it. That's why entrapment is illegal here in the United States. Because almost everyone will take something if it's made easy enough to take - but that does not make them a criminal.

Steve Jobs has proven, that if you provide convenience, people WILL pay for it.

Not to be mean, because I'm getting up in age myself, but I hope that these old fogies that can't grasp the technology will retire soon - rather than ruin it for everyone else.

I wonder if this will have an impact on Amazon cloud storage. It's very cheap to store files through Amazon and not difficult to share them.

Yeah ... personally, the only interaction I've had with MegaUpload and Filesonic and many other like them is to send DMCAs. Good riddance.

I found my answer to Amazon's MP3 Cloud Storage question though. It's in their TOS.

yeah, big picture us info-marketers need other ways to strategically counter piracy, mine is including webinars with dvd purchase, so that the bigger part of "what they buy" is not stuff that can be downloaded... though time intensive, I've already got dozens of webinars I've scheduled for this year for customers.

whenever the economy bounces, higher-end coaching will definitely be worth doing as well, though tougher to sell $1,000+ priced coaching programs.

I wonder how this will effect streaming sites that are legal. I would guess they have something that proves they have the rights to the movies.
