Hi

I have google analytics installed on my blog, and was wondering what 'bounce rate' means. And if it says 100%, is this good or bad?

cheers
Angela

Bounce rate is the percentage of people who visit your site then go off elsewhere (either your content isn't interesting or relevant)

100% bounce rate is the worst you can score.

Yes this is correct. I've found that bounce rate is directly effected by the quality of your traffic. If you are getting random visitors from all over the place, they will come to your site, decide they are not interested and then 'bounce' off it and close the window.

If your traffic is highly targeted, where you are getting people to your site who really want what you are offering, they will stick around and visit other pages etc, which will give you a much lower bounce rate.

Actually quite often it also related to the QUANTiTY of your content and how it fits together.

Bounce rate quite simply is a basic indication of how well you encourage others to read more on your site/blog. They only have to visit one other page on your site for the bounce rate to drop - so that is your objective.

Bounce rate can be manipulated very easily using these basic tricks/rules:
        • Try to write articles in a series so that if people like what they read, they will follow onto the next article in the series. I know plenty of good clients who have fantastic content but high bounce rates as much of their content is not related, so people read what they need and then disappear.
        • Try to add links to other content within your article. Try to add it seamlessly so that people feel they must read that article to in order to fully understand something.

Goes without saying that your should always write quality content - but that alone is not enough, you need to guide the user around to other articles. That is one of the biggest mistakes people make.

A lot of popular website now have slide shows, so have the 10 best pictures or something, but each picture is on a different page, thus artificially lowering their base rates.

That defies the point really, as you should be using bounce rate as a guide to tell you how well you are directing people around your site. (cheating it helps no one)

I'm sure others will add to this advice.

    Angela,
that is bad... That means they are leaving the site immediately without viewing any additional content. Every site is different as well as the bounce rate. Most of our websites run a bounce rate of 48 to 55%. Most of our sites are Review type Micro niche sites... There fore i would expect a somewhat higher bounce rate... I know there are warriors here who have rates well under 30%.

To answer your question... You want to get that rate as low as you can. You might start by looking at the layout and more importantly the content on your site.

    Regards,
    Robert

ok, my site is only a one pager, with a blog attached, would this make a difference? If people opt in, does this count as a bounce?

    HI
its bad, good sites have 0% bounce rate, so work on your blog and reduce it.

You should begin to think about the traffic you're getting. Is the traffic coming from Google, Social networks, Ads...?

And one more thing. The posts you have on the blogs are so short. You should make it longer and add some more content. I think the site looks boring when I visit it. Only headline, a bit of text and big image. This might be also a reason for the high bounce rate, but I don't think it would be 100%.

It shouldn't be pegged at 100% now since we (the people who replied here) checked your site. SamuelUherek has pointed out some of the reasons why the people would bounce off your site. Some of the posts actually have a decent length, but I think you should maintain that. Images are good 'cause people tend to look at images more than a wall of text. I also noticed that you didn't use the alt attribute for the images. I know this is kinda off topic, but do take advantage of that.

Bounce rate is defined by how many people visit your site and only visit one page. If your site only has one page then your bounce rate will never be lower than 100%. I see you have a bunch of internal links also, try putting some links within your content, anchor your keyword to another page, this might help it a bit. I'd also suggest to change your permalinks structure to /%postname%/ to make your links shorter and prettier, it also has some SEO benefits. You can change your permalinks under your setting tabs if you're using WordPress.

I also notice that you have no legal pages... TOS, Disclaimer, Disclosure, Privacy... All in all though, I think you have a pretty nice website

PS: Many product vendors could care less about bounce rate because their website is one page salesletter. If it earns money, why worry about bounce rate?

    Hope this helps

Bounce Rate is the percentage of internet users who visit your website and leave your website from the same landing page rather than continue viewing your website. So, you can easily understand that how bad 100% Bounce Rate is how bad for your website.
