Twitter advice please

I am fairly new to the use of Twitter and would like to know how to use it especially to send messages etc. When do you use # (hash) or @ symbols?
I would like to be able to message people about my projects etc but not sure when and how to use these symbols.
Up to now i have simply written as a status what i am doing and 'sent it'
Be very interested to learn about these symbols and any advice welcome, Thanks

# is what you use when your tweet is discussing a specific topic that you want people to see.

@ is what you use to directly talk TO someone

I found this site for you, Definition of hashtags, the easy hashtag directory, it has all the recent and popular hash tags.
As said above, # (Hash Tag) means your discussing that topic. Example #love would be discussing "love" you can see some other tags that are being discussed lately.

@ means your talking directly to someone, @JoeShmoe would be saying something specific to "JoeShmoe"
