I think it depends on the company. Personally I'm delighted to have people use similar sounding or worded domains to my own products in order to promote for me - publicity is PUBLICITY - but many companies aren't as clued up or as enlightened.

It's a risk you can choose to take if you want to, I've now chosen not to in the case of PS3, but there are others where I do use names that maybe I shouldn't, and they do perform well.

Thanks for this Frank, it confirmed my suspicions about trademarks. Not to say that your method isn't still great because there are plenty of non-trademark keyword phrases I have still found which you could use in a domain name.

So thank you for this, your post is an invaluable resource and added to my favourites.

Thank you, Frank for making available this great info.

Here is my only problem with your method, and something that I have been following to make this method perfect. To do all the work - in keyword research, combining with available domain names, and then tweaking to get in #1 on Google, and then to finally link up as an affiliate with Amazon is not always the best choice. IMO, its like creating a gorgeous christmas tree, and then just sticking any old thing at the top of it.

You've done all the work, now why not convert it into decent paying commission? If one wants to spend hours researching optional affiliate companies - comparing their commissions, their cookies, their webpage layout for easy navigation, ect, then there is a lot more money to be made than from Amazon. However, if Amazon is the only place that offers the product, of course, one has no choice. At least for now - but new affiliate companies are popping up all the time - keep checking. Commission Junction is a great - wish they had even more affiliate stores, though.

Why I don't like Amazon - (unless one has a high ticket item, or a website with 200 pages.):

*24 hour cookie (I just signed up with a company selling the same item that offers a 60 day cookie)

*If you live in the US - no commission from sales from other countries.

*No commission from third party sales on their websites.

*Approx 6% commission - company I just signed up with pays 15% - same product.

It took me hours and hours of research (and feedback from some helpful warriors) - but in the end I got a whole lot smarter, and I have better affiliate companies now to draw from in the future.

Karuna,

Great info. I didn't know that about Amazon's cookie. That kinda sucks, really.

Thanks for the great info Frank, I also wondered about this issue, so I went ahead and did a blog post on my blog using the keyword as the blog post title, we will see how it works for this niche.

This is a great post. A Lot of detail.

Ive setup a great little squidoo lens that I refer my friends and lists to when they want to find a niche. Just so no one jumps down my throat for spam It does have an offer at the bottom. My intention for this post is to deliver the other free tools i use to this thread.

I use amazon hot products, ebay pulse, SEO chat, Google trends,, Microsoft adLabs, you tube which are all free.. Terapeak costs, but is unbeatable for eBay drop shippers.

http://www.squidoo.com/nicheproductideas

Even though Google Keyword tool is free people should note that the same tool when logged in delivers more specific and accurate information. So if you do have an adwords account log in, go into one of your campaigns, click on tools and then select search based keyword tool.

Hello again Frank. Just wondering, I was re-reading this bit of your post:

But if your competition is general shopping sites like Amazon or Game or Play.com, then they're fairly easy to beat with a little bit of patience.

I'll explain how in a minute.

But I don't think you did.. at least I can't see where. I have a couple of niches I'm testing out and the competition is exactly that - retailer pages. Are these kind of pages easy enough to beat simply by putting a few keyword rich pages up? Or do you use any other methods to improve your rankings?

top quality info and an object lesson in how to lay out what you want to convey in a step by step format!

Thank you so much for this Frank.

As a relative 'noob' I am familiar with Google Adwords but like so many others here I never got around to clicking the new search based keyword tool link.

I have had a poke around though (as you do ) and if you click the little magnifying glass icon next to the very last drilled nich word you are looking for (the one where it shows you how much you pay per click) then it takes you to a page that I found quite interesting. If you scroll down it gives you a 'rising searches' list like this one

Rising searches
1 abba costumes + 150%
2 sailor costumes + 60%
3 halloween costumes + 60%
4 fancy dress Ireland +50%
5 80's fancy dress + 50%
halloween fancy dress + 40%

As you might guess, I searched in apparel, then clothing, then costumes and clicked on fancy dress costume which was the last niche keyword I could drill down to and it had a suggested bid of 0.27 (gbp).

I thought this was quite a good little extra, and if anyone has used it, I'd be interested to see what type of response they got

To our success

Thanks for an excellent post Frank.

I too could not access the tool using IE, but found that using Firefox solved the problem.

Following along with your video, and using "ps3 hdmi cable" as an exact match phrase, I found that there were about 20 adwords advertisers, so obviously the google data is a bit awry. But that finding is good, as another poster pointed out that really having no competition would suggest that there was no profit from bidding on a particular keyword.

The advertisers can also be seen in your video.

Hi Allen

I'm pretty sure Abba were 70's rather than 80's but in reply to your question about eliminating potential duplicates.......I'm sorry, I have no idea! It's just something I stumbled upon today when I was working through Franks suggestions and when I put in something of my own.

Thanks for putting all these together Frank...

One thing though... a few months ago I stopped using G's keyword tool after I got on the first page for a keyword with 22k searches a month and received ... almost 0 traffic (actually about 5-6 uniques a day from that kw) so I'd say G's not really sharing any real info for free ...

Therefore, I'd like to add(and many others said this before on this forum): if you found a good kw that you want to compete for, you first need to test it via PPC and see the real traffic you could get, then move on to SEO and try to get on the first page.

Cheers

Fantastic thread! People literally pay hundreds of dollars for LESS information than this (as long as it's over-packaged into hundreds of pages of screenshots and videos ) So truly, to give this away just to help other people on the forum out is commendable, my hat's off to you sir.

Also, I'm another that had seen that search tool link and never clicked on it... unbelievable!

The core problem is that Google search results for competition is sorely inaccurate and changes markedly from month to month.

This is EXACTLY what I was looking for, thanks!

I would add myself to the list of users who said "Thank You", but I can't find how to do that. I almost clicked the "infraction" button, lol.

Thanks Frank,

I really needed this info on how to dig down to the products that people are actually spending money on and how to find the sub-niches with low competition.

Awesome!!!

Thanks for sharing Frank.

Can anyone confirm whether Google results are more accurate if you are logged into your Adwords account?
