Hi! I received an unethical promotion email today where the subject was "Michael thinks you might be interested in Sunny Pointe Child Care Center"

And in the email the listowner promoted a "push button software"...

I think this types of promotion emails are very unethical because the listowner take advantage of (in this case) "Sunny Point Child Care Center", which is also a real child care center.

What is your opinion about DM like this? Do you get mad? Does it affect you negatively, so you don't want to buy the product that's being promoted?

Thanks,

Jimmy

I've grown to dislike nearly all e-mail marketing that isn't aimed at being beneficial or useful to me. People trying to get me to open mail based on idiotic subject lines are also going about it all wrong.

On the + side at least when someone reads my mail after a generally straight forward subject line I gain more credibility.

To answer your question: I do not feel like buying whatever is being sold, purely because I'm annoyed at the way in which it is being marketed.

I don't get mad but I know for a fact those who write subject lines like that are destroying their credibility. Funny, those are the same people who "teach" that email open rates are down and email marketing is dying... With subject lines like that it's no wonder their list doesn't trust them anymore.

  • Taking advantage of a child care center seems especially creepy, even for some spammer.

        "DM" means "Direct Marketing".

I'm with you on this. Not only plain creepy but really destructive to what we're all trying to do: get our important message out into the world.

I stopped buying 'how to' manuals on writing effective email marketing campaigns a long time ago because most tactics seem to be how to write eye-catching or soul-stirring subject headings. True or not doesn't seem to matter. If we step back and see just how desperate people have become! It's actually really sad.

Lately I'm getting one from someone who is even sending 'threats' in their subject heading. It's for a stupid software download but the subject heading states that I will get fined if I don't open this email.

What we can do is be ethical ourselves and trust that whoever needs to become our client will because they are called to do so within themselves, not because of some seriously distorted subject heading.

Unfortunately the world in general is full of people trying to make
a quick buck from anything all we can do is take it as it come's.
