E-Commerce Help!: Need A Nice Theme and What Plugins Do I Need?

Right,

My brother needs an e commerce site built, and I said I'd help him out.

Hes going to be selling Goalkeeping gloves and possibly other kit in the future.

I just need a nice looking wordpress E-commerce theme, that potentially sports a nice custom CMS for managing the whole thing. What would you guys recommend?

And also, whats people's experience with using wordpress for e-commerce? Can it work fine?

What do I need to get this rolling and working? What plugins should I need and how do I implement a safe, secure and working shopping cart & payment system?

Woo themes has their new line of ecommerce themes called Woo Commerce. They offer all the addons you need to have a very nice ecommerce site.

I'm using Cart 66 ecommerce plugin with a Studio Press theme on Rolling T Stores. I'm very pleased with Cart 66 as you can put the cart/buy buttons anywhere on your site which comes in handy to put products on separate optimized pages as well as multiple products on a category page. You can track inventory and also have product variations (like color or sizes) either the same price or different prices. The one thing I wish they would improve is to be able to put related products on the checkout page.

I was thinking so too, as we use Joomla at work and our web guy uses it too. Ive only ever really used it for adding and editing articles, and perhaps replacing some images, but in general I dont really know it that well or have a clue. I'd prefer to use wordpress if I can, as Im a lot more confident and comfortable with it.

Im considering this theme, it looks nice with some great functions included, particularly impressed with the shopping cart system.

Im definately swaying towards it. Been searching for a good few hours but posted up here regardless to see peoples suggestions.

So far its the best I've found, nice slide show, products are laid out nicely and the individual product pages themselves are laid out great too (I also like the special offers banner beneath them).

If you havent already, give the shopping cart system a test, its really nice and smooth and even features a drop down cart that is always at the top of the site. The FAQ tabs section is also a nice addition.

Just going to do some research into just what people have commented on about the theme and its support.

Steve Fullman pointed us to this one in another thread and it is gorgeous.

I didn't realize you had responded to my post about Joomla and deleted it thinking it wasn't a useful suggestion to you. Ah, too bad, Anyway...

I had the same feeling about Joomla for years until I ran into issues setting up and modifying wordpress which I have to say I have never felt crazy about using before but decided to finally try it out what with all the plug ins around and people singing its praises.

But frankly I was disappointed and found it's not as plug and play as some claim--at least not unless you have full tutorials AND know some form of CSS etc.

I didn't think it'd be that much trouble to figure out, but maybe I'm just missing something. I'm not bashing WP, just talking about my experience with it and offering what I feel more comfortable with personally.

To be honest I have only tried joomla a little but so far I am much more comfortable with it and yes it has a learning curve but it does look more appealing to me personally. You might be better off with WP as you said, that's up to you. I'll give more feedback over time when I have used joomla more.

Best of luck with your search for a theme and yes that WP theme you found is pretty nice looking. Great luck with it
