Please help me, I'm new to the IM game yet feel so screwed already

Hello Fellas.

After an offline business venture of mine pretty much failed, I saw the potential and opportunity present in the whole IM field. I just decided this month to give a shot at it, and started studying left and right in order to learn a bit of HTML and Dreamweaver, and am currently trying to become versed in SEO and how to run an IM business.

My two ideas are that I would want to try and have a few blogs on the right topics, and with enough visibility, to make me a small steady income through Adsense, and also, to create myself an Info product that I could sell through a webpage I've made, and cash in through Paypal.

Now the past few days I've been brushing up on the recent history of Paypal and Adsense, and I feel very discouraged about both plans. It seems that with both I'm at the end of a difficult dilemma.

Google seems to be quite brutal with its whole Adsense thing in that many thousands of people seemed to have been banned from Adsense with no reason whatsoever in the past two years, and whats worse is that seemingly there was no warning from Google, or no proper way to redress their banning, its just that they were banned and if they were innocent in their own eyes then its not Google's problem. As you can see if I'm going to be relying on a bunch of Adsensed blogs as a form of regular income, it seems that one day the rug will be pulled from under my feet and I'm be left with nothing with no way to get it back. I hear that once you've been banned you're out of it for life. That scares the living crap out of me. I've seen some very sorry and sad looking folks posting things up on their youtube about how Adsense just stiffed them and they were sure they didn't do anything wrong.

The same thing seems to be going with Paypal, as I've read so many stories of people's funds being appropriated for 180 day without due process, and without way to redress this. If Paypal wants to trip on you it can and will and take all your money in your account away. It seems as though Paypal is really out to get the Internet Marketer and especially the one's who are marketing Info products. Now if I'm going to be selling an Info product how can I feel secure in doing business when it seems that the merchant is almost always disadvantaged in every way?

It seems as though both Google and Adsense just seem to like behaving terribly to random people and this kind of scares me who is just trying to get into the game.

I'd appreciate everyone's thoughts. I hope maybe I could learn from the experience of the folks here on Warrior.

Lol, I am suprised that you even get out of bed in the mornings with all those worries!

Why are you worrying about something that hasn't happened yet and may never happen, i've been using adsense and paypal for almost 8 years and I've haven't yet had any issues.

I interviewed some guys last week who make thousands of dollars every month with adsense and build about 150 sites every month. As a result they got to talk to an adsense rep.. it was very enlightening what they were told.

    Just do and stop worrying!

Just a few things that jumped out at me when reading your post:
1 - Don't focus on the negatives and the few occasions that bad things happen.
2 - Don't put all your eggs in one basket.
3 - If a business plan scares you, don't go that route. There are plenty of other directions you can go and you need to feel comfortable with what you are doing.

it can be disheartening, but so can the state of anything. As a good friend of mine said, there is that which is wanted and that which is unwanted in every particle of the universe".

You can't be successful if you take your eyes off success - and that's what looking at what's wrong with the industries is doing to you - taking your eyes off success.

If adsense kicks you out, you could go straight affiliate marketing. I do better these days with affiliate marketing then adsense anyway. You just put a text link with some words of recommendation in a little box where the adsense would have been.

Or leave out the little box. just put a text link at the top of every post. it's easy.

If paypal kicks you out .. well hopefully by then there is a solid competitor.

Keep thinking the good thoughts and boycott the bad ones.

Go for it buddy, The only time you have to worry about getting banned and other negative consequqnces is when you are spamming with auto posts which are un-related , else google will not do anything that is going to harm their revenue {after all when you get the clicks and make some $$, our friend google gets the bucks too}.. just make sure you focus on getting valuable content and consistenly at that and the rest will be all fine.

I agree with many of the posts here... I would want to know the specific circumstances of the banned people. As for Paypal, if your site is on the up and up, I don't think you have anything to worry about. And Adsense, I just got back in the game and a account I had 4 years ago is still up and running and never got closed. So, I think you should stop worrying till there is something to worry about...

Just keep your act clean and comply (as far as possible) with the TOS for Google and Paypal and you will be fine.

My friend. Take a deep breath. There is so much more to IM than Adsense and Paypal.

One word of advice. Start building a list for each niche immediately. No excuses. You will appreciate that advice down the road.

Additionally, IM and an online presence compliments an offline venture very well in most cases.

Try to focus on creating awesome content and building niche lists. You will be glad you did.

Don't buy into the SEO pie in the sky hype. It does work, but not like you might be thinking at this point.

    Remember...great content...lists...

Adsense, advertising, CRO, SEO...all these things you will refine along the way.

This is a great point !

there was a great deal of value given in this thread!

My suggestion would be to get some good copywriting books and some good info on marketing.. well, if your intent is to sell online..

      Learn from sites like:

      Paul Myers

      David Deutsch

      Gary Halbert

there are many more sites but, that's a good start..

OP, you are wise to survey the landscape ahead for potential landmines before proceeding. I'll give you my thoughts, for what they're worth.

Google does indeed have a well-deserved reputation for pulling the plug on people's businesses without a word of explanation and with no means of recourse. It's happened to me personally on YouTube, a Google property. I had a YouTube account with nearly half a million channel views, featuring perfectly legal, TOS-abiding videos, shut down for "violations of our Community Guidelines and/or claims of copyright infringement" with zero explanation of how I had done any such thing (even THAT quoted information had to be garnered from the defunct account's page on YouTube, as there was no communication from them.)

The contact form provided on their site specifically for this situation returned no response. How's that for a middle finger? And it's not just YouTube, by any means. Many people have had similar problems with other Google platforms like Adsense and Adwords.

Fortunately for me, my business is diverse beyond the point that I would be greatly affected by losing that YouTube account. But, for many people, this kind of behavior by Google is crippling. How anyone within Google could set up such policies - could decide that it's just fine to destroy people's businesses without a word of explanation as to why, never giving them a chance to rectify the situation - is beyond me. And it doesn't help that Google essentially holds a grudge forever. To them, you'll be the same banned account holder twenty years from now that you are today.

And Paypal. Oh, Paypal. This is a company that will leap to freeze your account if their automated system flags you for whatever reason, and then make you jump through a gauntlet of hoops in order to restore it and regain access to your money. We're talking about bank statements, supplier invoices, UPS tracking numbers... it took me a good two days of work to provide them all the information they required when I was flagged. Many people find themselves unable to comply with all of the demands. And it's important to note that even if you complete every requirement, Paypal may still, at their discretion, refuse to allow you back into your account!

They even used to play a game where they would freeze you out of your account but continue allowing people to pay into it, knowing that you were unable to retrieve those payments and process the related orders. Seriously, they used to do that.

To better understand why Paypal operates this way, you have to understand the concept of the "float." All of the money in Paypal's possession earns them interest or returns as they hold onto it or invest it. When they freeze an account, that money is held in their possession - it is added to the "float." Gee, do you think this factors into how they approach flagging and freezing accounts?

Now, I know most people will tell you Google and Paypal probably won't mess with you. And they're right - but it depends on so many factors that there's really no way to know for sure. A few too many competitors flagged your videos on YouTube? You're done. Made too much money through Paypal as a new eBay seller? You're done. Get the idea?

Don't ever make your business dependent on either Google or Paypal. I know that seems like a stretch, but it's really not. There are alternatives to Adsense, there are other ways to advertise besides Adwords, and there are other traffic sources besides Google's SERPs. There are alternatives to Paypal as well, although we could certainly use better ones.

Overall, I commend you for thinking things through before you jump in, and I wish you the best of luck as you continue forward.

You might want to look around some more. Adsense is pretty low paying if you don't have a boat load of traffic to the sites.

I wouldn't worry much about Paypal at this stage. I've had my account for many years without any problems. Just make sure you get either a premium or a business account. Doing business with a personal Paypal account is just asking for trouble.

If niche blogs are what you're thinking of, you might want to put some Clickbank ads and reviews on them rather than just relying on Adsense for income.

You can also offer services when you have some skills that are marketable online, flip websites, get into PPC or CPA ads ... lots of different ways of making money online.

      I've read so many stories
Of course you have - and all the stories are bad. Why is that?

Because people who don't have problems with adsense and paypal (the great majority) don't post stories about it.

If you knew much about either of those services you would see beneath the veneer of many of the stories. Some people do have problems where it makes no sense - but the great majority have a problem for a reason. Of course, they only tell one side of the story.

For any service you use online or when signing up for adsense or similar programs - forget the gossip. READ the terms and conditions and make sure you stay well inside the lines.

Especially after the good advice you've been offered above.

Please excuse the observation that when I started three years ago it never occurred to me to look at or learn "HTML" or "Dreamweaver" at all, and it still wouldn't if I were starting from scratch tomorrow, either. I don't mean this as a criticism at all; I just think you may be making things much harder for yourself than you need to.

The adsense program may seem exceptionally particular in its requirements, but you can be confident that it's a solid program for people like you. Neither Google nor Paypal mistreat random people.

Paypal can be replaced with other payment processors. And if you have a good niche blog with good content you can easily monetize it without Adsense.

Depending on the nice of course, but generally, it Adsense pays you more than scraps for your visitors, your blog is in a niche where people pay good money to advertise in, so you can just replace adsense with affiliate links or even sell your own products.

I totally understand what you mean and yes Paypal will freeze accounts or withhold funds for a certain amount of time.

I have experienced account freezes and withholding but it is nothing to be alarmed about.

For example I sell physical products eBay but in order to have one of my dropship company send the products I added the addresses to my Paypal, as that was the only way my drop shipper would send it.

Needless to say I had lots of addresses and wanted to remove them...Paypal froze my account.

It is related to your account or unusual account activity...so think about it. I no longer add and remove addresses and deal with better drop ship companies that do not require hoops.

It is important to communicate with Paypal security, especially if your account has little or no activity and you are planning a full blown product launch and a flurry of activity.

Paypal holds money to cover refunds otherwise your balance is in the negative...Paypal does not have authority to just withdraw the money from your bank, like when you purchase a product. So that is why your money is on hold.

Now, once your money is available do NOT withdraw a bunch of it out at once, Paypal freaks out and they freeze your account. It just looks suspicious like someone hijacked your account and want to withdraw the money and run.

As far as an IM newbie I understand

My personal advice is find a mentor, guru and stick with them...The learning curve can eat you up...making you the 95% that fail...sorry don't mean to be negative just REAL.

Fellow warriors are right focus on success rather than worries. But success without guidance can leave you wandering for 10 years before you finally decide to get your head on straight and give it your best shot, TAKING ACTION...wow, where would I be now if I followed my newbie advice?!

Your are off to a great start you are asking questions...be a learner...super key to success!

There is cases where Google banned wrongly and Pay Pal held money they probably shouldn't have. Those are very few and far between.

Those telling the story forget about the entire events surrounding the debacle. Selective memory mostly.

I have been marketing online for 14 years or so. I have never had a substantial amount of money held by Pay Pal. The couple of times they did it was because of the country the person I was doing business with lived in and the money cleared in a couple of weeks.

The few refund request I have gotten have been handled the instant I got them if there was a refund offered .. most of the time if I didn't mention a refund .. it just is not worth fighting 1 refund and losing 10 sales in the time wasted.

Wow .. HTML and dream weaver .. I wouldn't know dream weaver if it bit me in the butt and the little HTML I know is just enough to set a cap form and maybe change a color around or something else minimal.

Not saying those skills would not be a great thing to have in my arsenal .. just always concentrated on getting people to my offers and converting those offers.

You just need to quit all this stuff and start taking action. You could come up with an excuse not to go outside. There are people who do that. Unhealthy, sure. But not unheard of. Okay, what if all this stuff happens? Is there some reason you can't solve these problems and come out on top?

Get rid of the negative thoughts. If something scares you that much, find an alternative. Dive in, really do you have anything to lose?

Make a plan A with follow up plans b, c etc. but focus on what you know and do best.

Stay positive, work hard and you will succeed.

Believe in yourself, go with what feels right for you, not others.

Find a problem you can solve for people. Put together a solution that you can get behind...that your self-esteem says "YES!" about. Get in front of your market and explain that you can solve their problem.

All the rest is just implementation. And implementation is always technical...which can be gotten for a price. But the original idea, that's priceless.
