I sold a website on Flippa almost 1 year ago for $850. The buyer jumped on the BIN and paid immediately. After the sale he went MIA. The domain was about to expire a month after the sale and since the buyer never followed through with the transfer, i still owned it, so I renewed it. After 5 months, he emailed me and told me he had some issues and would get back to me soon to get the site. It's been 6 months since then and I haven't heard from him and can't get in touch with him. He hasn't logged into Flippa for 6 months. His Flippa profile shows he's only had one transaction - mine. Now the domain is up for renewal next month. We did this transaction a year ago and the guy just vanished.

Any suggestions? I guess i need to renew the domain. Everything is still in my name. Should I flip it again and put $850 aside in case he ever surfaces? Since all of our communication was through Flippa, i have no way to contact this guy. What's the statute of limitation on this??

This is a first for me.

    YOU WAITED AN ENTIRE YEAR?!?!?

I would just relist the site on Flippa.

In regards to the money - I wouldn't try to keep contacting him. I'm guessing that the money is now yours, however I am not a lawyer.

    Tough situation to be in.
First, kudos for at least trying to get into communication with the guy. Many people would "take the money and run." In this case, after a year I think I would move on. But I also am not a lawyer, though I do not think there is much precedence on a case like this.

This has happened to me several times on Flippa. I'd sell the site and after a couple of e-mails to the buyer they disappeared. Once I was able to transfer the site but the buyer never setup another website on it. When the sites that weren't transferred expired later I didn't bother to renew them. It's up to the buyer to help get the site transferred but when they never respond I let them expire.

While it might be tempting to sell the site again, the MIA buyer is the legal owner even though you still have control over the domain name. I would renew it for another year, push it to a new account at the registrar and email him the user/pass. Email him the site files also and just wash your hands of this.

Same thing actually happened to me once. After about 1 1/2 years, I flipped the site again. He never showed up. Don't know what happened with him.

Thank's for all the feedback. I tracked down the buyer's email through PayPal and I've tried emailing that address directly. I'll wait another couple of months and see if anyone ever answers me, then i guess I'll just flip it again.

I wonder if its worth contacting Flippa and asking them what their "terms of service" would have to say about this??? Based on their response, as long as you follow what they say, you cannot possibly go wrong in a wacky case like this...I would think.

    my thoughts on this...

Send him 3 reminders, probably 1 week apart and mentioned that by the third letter on a given date if he did not respond then it is deemed that the deal is void and the money forfeited. This is something like if you take your laundry to the cleaners and you dun claim it within a certain period, normally 90 days, then the owner of the cleaner have the right to forfeit your clothings and sel it, burn it or whatever he likes to do with it. It's printed at the back of the receipt. You may want to C.C. Flippa if you are sending the letter to keep them in the loop so you have witness to what you are doing. Hope this helps...
