Very Pointless Blog Commenting

When people are either paid to comment are blogs or are doing themselves either for backlinks or promoting a product why do they never, ever seem to comment on the article, I mean what an oversight. I'm assuming it's automated spam, although I'm not really aware of the mechanics involved.

Here's my last article I wrote:

What is Photoshop? | Web Host & Design Consultancy | www.pennyhosts.com

All you need to write is 'Thanks - I've been looking into buying Photoshop' and take advantage of the comment luv application. My site is PR4 isn't that attractive? I write the articles myself.

Not write:

'hey dude, I like the organic feed of your typing, it makes my day fit with purpose and I give you large ray of moon energy'

Go on someone write a nice comment, and I'll add you to my list :-)

But people write nonsense....!

If you pay for a blog commenting service, I suppose they using automated software - that's why it's not topic specific?

Makes you wonder about their ability to use spinning software too. I mean - who thought "moon energy" was a good replacement for "sunshine"????

99% of blog commentary is purely for SEO. Very few people actually leave comments without the express goal of leaving a backlink, automated or not.

And that's the point. The web needs a service to combat this junk. Imagine if there was a service like Akismet that checked all comments against a known-spam DB.

TBH, I don't think that spam will ever end. If backlinks were to fall off the algorithms tomorrow and social was the new signal for popularity we'd be flooded with "get 1000 likes per week for $9.99".

            /sigh.

Automated software or not, these spammers simply aren't going to spend the time required to make their comments relevant to your articles. They want to hit as many blogs as they can in the shortest possible length of time. It's just a numbers game for them, and I doubt that most of them ever think about quality as an issue.

But there's absolutely no SEO worth in that for them though. Is that correct?

The only SEO value I can see in it is either a short term rankings increase, or possibly the benefit of including these links as one small part of a balanced link profile. If there is any value to it at all, that is.

I've had a massive increase in crappy comments on my blog...

And you can see they are copy and pasted coming from fake email addresses...

I'll probably start using the facebook commenting system to see if I can reduce the number of crap comments....

I just went to your site and one small comment or feedback...
You have huge paragraphs. Try to break them into smaller paragraphs.

I have a blog where I provide lots of info and i had a huge bounce rate even though people were finding the blog b/c of their specific queries. In other words, I had a post like this: how to win hockey scholarships in the sahara. People were typing in the search, how to win hockey scholarships in the sahara.

Yet, they came to my page and left in 10 seconds. Couldn't figure out what was going on so sent the post to friends and all of them said, man, your post is too much to read.

Then I stumbled on somebody else's blog (can't find it now) and they said that you should have 2 or 3 sentences per paragraph. Anything more, and people will bounce.

I did the correction and my bounce rate immediately decreased, which led to people actually reading the article and leaving appropriate comments on the page.

Interesting comment on the paragraphs length, may try that on my next post. I hadn't interpreted as a problem...

I think now that longer articles probably have more clout, not super long, but I'm thinking 1000 words, 1200 - which is the amount you'd write to cover a subject fairly. But you do have to think about the paragraph length without interrupting the flow.

      Thanks...:-)

As a Real blogger you should not use that automated commenting software. It is better if you don't comment rather than using those software. They should know that all those auto comments are going straight to SPAM folder. So no use of that software, you won't get any Backlinks. stop using and come to real world :p

I get at least a dozen 'spun' comments a day, most of the time they dont even make sense, i started using the Akismet widget, this has made a big difference, it just means i have to go through them and either approve or bin them, think it's just part of the quick buck society of today, good quality content should always be uppermost in any comment, and try to give your help to others.

With all my moon energy luvin'.lol

I've been the victim of such ridiculous comments on my blog as well. People who prefer quantity to quality use automated software to make thousands of these comments all over the web, no matter how ridiculous they may sound. You could install akismet and a captcha plugin to get rid of all these comments - it detects 99% of them.

Comment Software works off of spintax and is designed to simply appear unique to google and try to make the link stick inside a bunch of relevant text.

They dont care if you ever see it, in fact they would prefer if you dont, you can often find old abandoned blogs filled with hundreds of such comments.

You can often tell the "good" ones right away due to their attempt to use social engineering to make you publish or keep it "Your|You are|Wow|Thanks such an awesome|excellent|amazing|super-duper writer|blogger|author|site owner"

My favorite is when their software screws up and they leave the comment with all the pipes and spintax still in place

The other "good" one i see alot is "I was looking at your site in "________" browser and this mistake happened, just thought you should know

You just really dont get many real comments these days unless you have a returning community that gets conversations going in your comments.

What really cracks me up is when people outsource their blog commenting and the commenter uses the email address of the person they are working for.

The person buying the comment has their Gravatar show up by the comment.

This is bad when the comment reads like it was written by a clueless idiot, and I'm not talking about the spun ones.

The after-effect is the IMer and everyone in their operation look like a bunch of "bozos".

Outsourcing that type of thing can really backfire.

people who run automated spam bots are utter morons. thankfully, that sort of crap is dying out - within the next couple of years i don't think even the most backward thinking "SEO" will utilise automated blog commenting.

having said that, there are probably thousands of bots which have been forgotten about and will just keep going until the world ends.

There is also the other side of the coin, for instance Ive spent hours upon hours leaving manual comments by reading the full articles and talking about the topic posted only to be reported to askimet for my troubles.

Either blogs want comments or they dont and if they do then why on earth delete relevant comments and report them to askimet just for leaving a link back to your site ... thats what the box is for, for leaving a link back.

Works both ways and its no wonder that some times that people will say to hell with it and then post spam when they get shafted anyway for actually trying to be constructive.

I'm sure a lot of these comments are left by bots. I'm also sure that a lot are left by humans, some of which are probably being paid to comment. Too bad really as in my opinion those paying them are not getting their moneys worth as most of their comments would probably be spammed or deleted.

I have a comment policy which explains to my commentators what is expected of them but unfortunately a lot do not take the time to read it. I even wrote a post called Teaching People The Proper Way To Comment and in that post I said that I was going to grade the comments out of 10. I reckon some of those who left a comment wished that they actually read the post

I also have many pointless comments incoming to my blog, and I deleted them immediately. If we publish those pointless comments into our blog posts, our visitor reputation might be destroyed. As a blog poster, it's important for us to receive valuable and high quality comments than just simple "Thank yous' and "Nice posts".

Yea, that's right ever since the phrase "Blog Commenting" has gone viral for getting backlink one would find "web" promotion comments instead of commenting on real content, "web links" in the comment box instead of putting them in the place of "website".

Instead of adding some good they waste their times so do they of the webmaster to keep the blog spam-free and ensure maintenance.
