Why Is Everyone Using Wordpress These Days?

I just installed wordpress on three fresh domains a couple days ago, 2 out of three already have a half dozen pages indexed in google without me doing anything to them except installing them. Crazy.

Hi,

Once I finally caved in and started using wordpress I found that after the initial learning curve it was SO much easier than building a regular website.

As far as SEO the title of my blog got me ranked near the top of page one on google out of 88,900,000 without quotes and 102,000 with quotes.

Plus, it's killer for SEO. But you need to install a few plugins to really create a Google Ranking machine.

I've found Wordpress to be really user friendly, it also does a good job of organising the pages on your blog.

Only other thing i've had experience with so far is NVU, I can see the use in it now but when I first started with that it took me a LOT longer to figure out than Wordpress.

Doing simple things such as adding pictures or videos to your blog are a lot easier with Wordpress, once it's installed you'll probably never need to use FTP with it.

If you've got hosting with cpanel you can probably use fantastico to install WordPress in a few clicks.

If you do it this way you might get a previous version of Wordpress but in my opinion that doesn't matter at all. They usually catch up with this and you can upgrade with one click (if you ever do this and get errors, try updating your plugins from cpanel).

Without being too techie i'd say it automatically does a few 'things' (ping, rss etc) without you knowing that bring in more traffic.

If you did nothing whatsoever for traffic other than work on your standard website or Wordpress blog I get the feeling a Wordpress blog would rank better on the search engines and get more traffic than a standard website.

Then again someone who's really hot with technical stuff could probably create a website with HTML that does better.

With a few key plugins you're all set (All in one SEO should deffinately be considered).

If you want your site to look professional I love the themes here

If you want you can pay for themes or pay for someone to make you a custom theme. Still there's lots of great looking free ones.

If you go for a two or three column one you can easily add adsense, banners or any other extras you want.

If you don't know squat about hosting, creating links, tags, domains, titles etc it's an excellent way to start learning the basics.

I'm sympathetic with ukescuba's views.

Yes - Wordpress is easy-peasy to set up and manage.

However, I have two little worries.

(1) When EVERYONE says its great, then I will join the awkward squad and say
BOO. "Two roads diverged in a forest and I took the road least travelled. It made all the difference. I don't necessarily want to follow the crowed

(2) Allen Says made a comment in one post somewhere (I think it was in the War Room) to the effect that although he had no proof, his gut was telling him that maybe Google
might be seeing WP sites as somewhat 'spammy'

In researching my latest WSO on getting traffic with free themes, it seems that most of the scamming/spamming with the technique has been centered around WP... the fact that it is so widely used, especially by people with lower-tech skills seems to be why.

If its easy to do, then thats usually the first route for scammers/spammers... and another great reason to upgrade to a higher order CMS.

It does help differentiate.

Of course - this is a GENERALITY... I see really amazing WP sites all the time (lots of warriors), and I have been really impressed with what they can do with it...

plus it's never been easier for Newbies to learn WordPress since the developers released version 2.7 and now they've launched WordPress.tv which houses all the WordPress tutorials on video

I'll admit I'm signed up with WP but never did anything on it. I was a part of the 30 day blogging challenge that was here last month [before it moved off-forum], and I think everyone else that participated used WordPress. Their blogs looked more professional & had more plug-ins than mine did. I think with the new video tutorial site I'll go ahead and take the plunge into it for good this time!

are there WP themes out there that don't look like blogs, but rather normal websites?

the reason I ask is I need to build a basic website for an offline business, they need it to look like a regular website, not a blog.

You can set it so your posts are pages rather than posts. You can remove the of the widgets they provide which are designed for blogging. So you can achieve the look you want.

I haven't tried them then but there are themes which have the look of a regualr site. Wordpress is really html with blocks of php code inserted which you can
take in and out.

You can do a lot of cool stuff with WordPress. My money
is on Drupal being the platform of the future for large-scale
sites and sites that may require lots of expandability.

I'm not knocking WP. It's cool. Just check out Drupal if
you want to be taken seriously as a web developer. There
is a lot of demand for people who understand it.

I've seen WP posts indexed by Google in a matter of 5 or 6 minutes so if you are announcing anything (a WSO, a new product) make sure you mention it on your WordPress blog.

The only drawback I have found so far was the use of many DB queries which slows the website considerably in compare to regular websites that I design.
However, I found a solution to that with the wp-cache plugin.
The learning curve is really fast and I am starting to really like it!

I love WordPress! I just upgraded a couple weeks ago, and now that I'm getting used to it, I wish I'd done it ages ago.

It's so much easier to use, more user friendly, and faster than trying to build a site with Dreamweaver.

the reason is that WP already has many features "built in" like RSS, blog and ping/tag etc..etc and it is FAR easier to get a WP blog ranked then a static site. (It is also far easier to BUILD/MAKE a WP blog than wasting time designing a static site)

Then there are countless great plugins and themes and most of them are FREE.

its just the way to go, IMHO. WP rocks.

Alex,

You may also want to prevent the date a page or post was put up on from showing up on the site. That is a sure sign of blogging

It'll need you to go into the theme files and do some editing but it is a one time task.

As far as why I use WordPress, it's SO SO simple to use it. Takes literally minutes to install, no HTML to tackle - just a "click here, paste your post and click that button" approach that works a charm

Hmm I have this probably not quite smart question btw.
If I create homepage at wordpress it`s url will be something.wordpress.com
I understand that I could make domain something.com and forward it to smth.wordpre...com... Or you just take template and upload it to your hosting provider? So when I would create page in wordpress I wouldnt need to forward them to *..wordpress.com.
I`m just thinking of developing my first web page and after reading some comments about that its better for seo started to wonder about URL`s..

I'm not a wordpress expert, but you can host the wordpress blog on your own site.

You need a host that has mysql and php etc but this should be standard.

In my opinion, if you are going to build a big site around the wordpress software then you should host it yourself. Then you can't get all your work destroyed if wordpress don't like what you have done. You can also set up some mini wordpress blog sites on their hosting as well if you want to.

If you want wordpress to host the blog for you then go to:

wordpress.com

If you want to download the software and install it on your own site and domain then go to:

wordpress.org

The difference between Wordpress.com and Wordpress.org are confusing to some people at first.

A wordpress.org blog is hosted on your own web server and is what most if not every one on this thread is talking about.

Wordpress.com blogs are fine for backlinks, to point to your main site or just for personal blogs (not intended to make money).

Yes, with wordpress.com, your site is a subdomain of theirs.

If you have or are going to get your own domain name, there are likely better solutions than pointing it to your wordpress.com site. I don't want to hijack this thread so let me say if I were you, I would buy my own domain name, get some inexpensive hosting and put a wordpress.org blog on it.

I have Wordpress.org exclusively on my main sites, and use Wordpress.com and similar sites for backlinks.

yeah, wordpress rocks.. and you can make it look like a 'normal' (non-blog) site if you want to if you take the time to figure out how the themes work (pretty simple).

If you have to ask, you haven't ever tried it. Because if you tried it, you wouldn't have to ask. In a former life, I was a web designer doing freelance and in-house projects. I quit because it was a pain. If WordPress existed back then, I might still be doing that job. As a person who CAN code HTML and CSS with a little bit of PHP and javascript - I will NEVER go back to doing static sites - there's just no point. WP makes it too easy.

Because it's easiest, free and have an options of lots of free plugins and templates. But if you are slightly experienced and looking for more control over your websites with one central administration section, go with something like expressionengine. Truly unique and amazingly flexible in what it can do for your business.

Again, if you intend to run only a blog, wordpress is a winner..if you intend to grow your site to an authority site or something similar, EE is a winner.

- I am not affiliated with EE in anyway. It's just that I am an extremely happy user of EE ..after using drupal, joomla and wp for few years for my clients..and slowly converting them all to EE.

I hate to be fly in the ointment but I actually found wordpress a bit of a pain in the a** to set up.
It's all very well if your happy with the themes settings, but if you want to customize them in any way you are expected to know some CSS.

I've yet to see the SEO results but if they aren't THAT good, I think I'll go back to Xsite pro personally. (I'm not much of a code guy - can you tell? lol)

WordPress is great for users, not so much for the search engines. See WP will create multiple pages for the same page i.e.
yourdomain.com/category/post1
yourdomain.com/tag/post1
yourdomain.com/?=p3
yourdomain.com/category/your-category/post1

This can hurt you by being hit with the duplicate content penalty or what google calls "canonicalization" more info from Matt Cutts: SEO advice: url canonicalization and http://www.seologs.com/wordpress/wor...-content-cure/

I have used WordPress › Platinum SEO Pack WordPress Plugins to automatically add the no index tag to the /category and the /tag folders /archive tag.

And also used WordPress › Nofollow Links in Posts WordPress Plugins to channel the pagerank away from outside URLs to pages that I want to rank within my blog.

I find wordpress easy to use, and ranks fast in search engines.
If I get stuck with anything in a setup of a certain blog, I
just outsource it, and it is done in no time.

Most people who use wordpress don't know anything about web design or web development ... WordPress is a great alternative ... i don't think SEO is a big factor in extensive use of wordpress now days

actually..SEO is a huge factor. WordPress posts can get top 10 listings in Google within hours. Since 2006 I have dominated Google for certain keywords. That never happened before when I had a static site.

What's so great about Wordpress too, is that you don't have to be really technical to use it. Of course, if you want to do any major tweaks to a theme then you do need to know some XHTML , CSS, and PHP. The thing is there is tons and tons of FREE info on how to do things with Wordpress. My only advice is that you look for info that is current. WordPress 2.7 is considerably different from other versions.

i guess i will have to be the one that has to be awkward!

i am Joomla all the way - i did a presentation on Joomla SEO with the founder of Joomla at the SEM For SMB conference in Austin last year... if you where there for the 2hr presentation hopefully you understand a little better the direction i am coming from...

i think most people find joomla to be too complicated... i think its more to do with that the current documentation its done by techies that have really taken it to a level and beyond that most people struggle with... it need not be that difficult to learn...

Joomla is an awesome tool and i get fantastic results in the SERPS time after time, even out of the box joomla can perform well.

There are many things you just cannot do with wordpress that joomla can do, being a developer who likes to rip things to pieces i quickly found the many limitations joomla has and also how to effectively exploit it to be an effective part of my SEO arsenal!

i made a lot of contributions to the SEO whitepapers for the forthcoming Joomla 1.6 i just hope the powers that be listened...

anyone any questions on joomla feel free to PM me... hopefully i will have a high enough post count to be able to reply!

Thanks for opening up the thread to other CMS systems. Alot of people know that I am a Drupal fan, but I actually used Mambo for years before the fork to Joomla. Glad to know that you are active in the community and helping make it a better system!

FWIW - I chose Drupal over Joomla (and continue to) for the simple fact that while Joomla has a bit smaller learning curve currently, it achieves this by sacrificing a certain amount of flexibility.

Of course, since you are a programmer then the Open Source system poses little challenge!

Also, I have been a bit disappointed in how overtly commercial the Joomla community is. If you are to search for themes or add-ons, you will find that there are tons of commercial ones available... When you do the same for Drupal there are almost none.

Thats not to say that commercial is a bad thing, but I think it does speak to the overall structure of the community. Thats alot of great code that is "locked away".

That being said, its just my opinion.

Joomla is a GREAT CMS! There is no one right way, and if anyone chooses Joomla, they will have a solid platform with a good community to provide support.

I suggest that anyone seriously interested should take a day to install a few CMS systems to test directories on their web host (Fantastico makes it easy), and then play with them for an hour or so.

Investigate, kick the tires and test things out. Find the best system for you!

Great words about Wordpress, and I'd have to agree! Wordpress is terrific because it's easy, free and has options for loads of free plugins and templates. Very user friendly and once I started I 've found its so much more easier to use than building a regular website from a hosting account! It tops SEO rankings with blog titles and got me ranked near the top of page one on google out of 99,000 results! Highly recommended, and check it out!

First I would like thank kim for her info on Wordpress. I remember WP from a couple of years ago and it was a respected blogging platform and not many people were in to blogs (at least I wasn't ) and when you signed up you got a domain hosted by WP and the domain name was wordpress.com/myname but now you can buy a domain name and have it (WP) hosted by whoever.

And to dovetail off Mr Thomas Wilkinson comment it will get easier as you go along.

Wordpress is a solid content management system... and coding straight html/php pages doesn't make sense unless you have a very small/specific site plan.

I think Wordpress is great for blogs and some basic sites... but if you want more than a blog I suggest something a bit more robust like Joomla or Drupal. Between the two, I prefer Drupal. Its got alot more Free modules and themes than Joomla and incredible flexibility.

I use Drupal even for blog sites because I can easily and quickly add in some extra features like a forum, ratings and even basic web applications. Its also SEO friendly out of the box.

Right about now, people will begin to point out that you can make Wordpress do those kinds of things, as well as Joomla... and they are Right! However, you have to keep in mind that Wordpress was and is designed primarily for a Blog. Thats what the code is based on.

Drupal (and Joomla and other great CMSs) is designed to be an open ended platform for developing a Web System... and the code reflects that. Even if you aren't a programmer, thats important.

Why?

Go take a look at Modules | drupal.org and see the hundreds of free modules that are available (with more added each day). The reason there are so many is that Drupal is a programmers dream, and it makes it easier to create new modules and add new features.

BOTTOM LINE: If you want a blog or just a solid entry-level website, go with Wordpress. You will find a ton of support and lots of great freebies.

If you want a more robust site, or the option of easily expanding it later, go with Drupal (or Joomla).

Everyone is using Wordpress because everyone is talking about Wordpress and telling people to use Wordpress in all the latest ebooks, special reports, etc.

Does it get you ranked fast? Yes.

But I created a brand new site with ColdFusion on my own domain (no Wordpress in site) and got indexed in 24 hours. All I did was submit the site to Google via their sitemap process.

Wordpress is cool because it's easy to use. I can create documented steps and hand them to anyone (whether they know what a webpage is or not) and they can follow them... where I can have them update the pages on my ColdFusion developed site.

Wordpress sites/pages get deindexed just like other sites. People are quick to talk about "I got indexed in [#] of hours with Wordpress" or "I got to the 1st page of Google with my Wordpress blog" but they don't tell you how long the index/1st page lasted. ...the longevity is what you do off site.
