Social Sites - Don't Put All Your Eggs In One Basket!

My daughter is a professional singer. When she was starting out, she set up profiles on many sites (and participated in them) to promote her music. When she went off to college things slowed down and she just focused on a few of them. Now that she is in L.A. seeking her fortune, we decided to revisit many of the sites and see what was going on with them...the results were surprising

Hi5- turned into a game site
Friendster - turned into a game site
SocialVibe - got rid of the social aspect
Ning - turned into a paid platform
Snapvine -disappeared
Artistic Pursuit - disappeared
Teenspot - deleted her for having a banner up
Zorpia - got rid of the music section - at least we cant find it anymore

and on and on with many of the sites either gone or dramatically changed.

I think the lesson we learned is don't waste time on a lot of social media sites because they are likely to get swallowed up, change their TOS etc. In fact you can almost count on that happening. However, you want more than one just in case.

Best practice may be to pick a few to focus on, so if one disappears you have another. Naturally it is best to focus on driving traffic from there to your website instead of making the site the end of the road.

I wouldn't have suggested it anymore than I do now. Just because FB isn't trigger happy, that doesn't mean they'll always be like that.

I myself have 4 social accounts.

      IM Loop
      Facebook
      Twitter
      Google Plus

That seems enough for me and if one shuts down I still have three to fall back on.

Not to mention, the audience for each varies. I have people on twitter and facebook that I don't have on G+, while nobody on IM Loop is on G+. Then we have to take into account the people with a G+ account that doesn't have twitter or facebook.

Basically though, you reach more of an audience that is still targeted by distributing your social media platforms. It only takes a couple of minutes for each one and that is to just post a status update and then connect with other people.

Result... My blog traffic has four different streams of people coming to it - all (or most) that wouldn't have found my blog by using ONLY Facebook.

With this being the case, the OPs daughter might have reached more people by using as many as she did. Just because someone loves "twitter" doesn't mean they'll feel the same about "facebook". Only her daughter (and possibly the OP) will know how much higher her reach was, but IMO - she did pretty good doing what she did.

That's my two cents though, take it or leave it.

She actually ended up doing well with the sites. She was featured on Zorpia as an artist (on the main page) twice, was highlighted on Myxer (ringtone company) and got thousands of downloads, was on the cyber cover of "Artistic Pursuit" ditto PureStyle Magazine (also gone) etc.
She was even featured on Twitter (when they featured people) she was an early joiner (happily that is still around).

So she worked those sites to her advantage. But now many of them are gone or dramatically changed so the fan base there is not the same. However, the credit on her resume and the screen shots we saved are super nice.

And she did focus her time on Myspace - now she is more on Facebook and Reverbnation. With the objective to move traffic to her website.

But I guess what is shocking is how many of these sites are just gone or so dramatically changed.

Yes, it is interesting how quickly those sites are redeveloping themselves in an attempt to carve out a solid niche for themselves that they can stand on.

yeah social sites are still popping up, trying to get big and going under. You generally only hear about the big ones though.

Again, it is about diversity, not only in sites but in types of sites and in types of traffic.

I still like article marketing and writing well enough so you get syndicated all over on lots of different sites.

But I also do social networks, the big two, facebook and twitter and then some others related to my markets and forums related to my markets.

These three are here to stay at least for the next few years:

    Facebook
    Twitter
    Google Plus

So, it would be a good idea to increase her twitter followers base and the fan base on facebook

All the best for her and I wish she becomes a super star singer !!

I have to agree with this.

Infact, I cant understand how anyone would want to not have their own website, and publish ALL of their content directly to Facebook?

Regardless of how big they are, you should always retain control over your own content.

She should have promoted her music on Myspace. I used to date this exec who was looking for talent all the time, and she said the best way to get recognized was to put up music on your Myspace page, and let others know about it.

Oh she did (does) have an organic fan base of over 31,000 fans on Myspace and close to 400,000 genuine song plays.

She got many offers from it, including many fake ones. We spent a lot of time going thru fake offers and a few real ones.
