Question for the Forum...

Hey Warriors, I have a question...

I have one of my sites that is showing users registering, even though I don't have a form on my site. I use StatPress to look at traffic details, and I notice odd sites showing up, saying they are linking in to my site, but I go to those sites and see nothing but garbage posts not related to my site at all.

I am wondering if these "phantom" user registrations, many of whom show the same first name "hunar" followed by @ then a site name, are behind all of these. Also, along with referrals coming from these unrelated sites, I show in my stats that robot.txt was accessed, but I can't find in my file manager for my site any robot.txt file.

Hope this question/scenario isn't too vague, but I'd like to clear this matter up so that my traffic stats show a clear picture of what is going on with my site, and I don't have any slimeballs piggybacking on my hard work to peddle their garbage.

Any thoughts are well appreciated!

Dennis

I don't know If this Is your problem, but scrapebox can be used to fake referers, and the faked referers will show up In your latest visitors page In cpanel.

I get a lot of those to that show up In my stats. I don't even bother going to the sites to check them out. I wouldn't worry about It.

Sounds about right. I see this all the time in my AWstats when I create a new site. Basically, black hat marketers scraping up links, list, and so forth.

Do you mean actual users in your wordpress system. If so they mus be going to wp-adim and using the register option on the admin login page. I would look at the settings in wordpress under general settings and make sure you have not got "anyone can register" option ticked. This should stop people registering as users on your site.

        Hope this helps

wordpress is bane for spammers. pretty much every wp site i have ever had has gotten spam comments or registered users even after i disallowed most of that stuff, or hid it. you have to do a lot of tweaking to block those completely. wouldn't worry about it unless they are leaving actual spam comments on your site. you can also blacklist IP addresses with some plugins.
