If list building works...

Bear with me. We all know, if done properly, a person can make good money with opt-in lists. We collect highly targeted emails and at the end, create campaigns. With that in mind, except higher profit margins and gained reputation in particular niche, what other advantages are there to running campaigns with products you have created?

I don't think I fully understand the question.

You can build a list to promote affiliate products not just for running campaigns for products you have created.

Oh, okay. I though list building, for some reason, worked much better if you sold your own products.

No wonder you were confused about list building.

I have found that people need a lot more direction than can be provided in sales pages, so I create lists based on those needs in niches I am familiar with and the forums and social networks I follow.

That is how I found my niches and then I did some research to find which ones where profitable and found good products that I personally used that were of good value to promote.

I give added value by answering the questions before they are asked of my subscribers and I build a relationship with them based on other things I've read online.

I started with just one list and that took me a few days to get going as I had no previous technical knowledge. But now, I can get a new page up and start a new list in a few hours.

The other day I started a new one and within a little over 6 hours had made my first sales. :-)

However, for me, it is not about speed. It is about continual, consistent, maintainable residual income so I promote mostly recurring programs of high demand.

It works either way. Just depends on what you want to do. I do both. When you create and sell your own product, you're not splitting the earnings, plus you are building your name and your brand.

The point of list building is that you have a traffic source that you can call on at any time. You are always building your list from different traffic sources, but whenever you come out with a new product, or want to promote someone else's, you already have all that traffic "saved" up, and you can use that traffic source over and over. It doesn't matter if it's your own product or not, you always have a traffic source waiting for you, and you will get better and better results if you begin building a relationship with the people on your list.

List building is the heart and soul of internet marketing. You absolutely need to build a list if you want to have a long-term sustainable online business, whether you are selling your own products or promoting products as an affiliate.

List building works fine for your products and other people's products.

If you are a product building machine, then chances are you can only create one product every week to two weeks.

But, by selling other people's products too, you can give your subscribers more value over the long-term.

The issue is not "how much you can make" really... The real issue is "how much value can you give your readers".

Building an email list of targeted buyers is very effective and worth it. If you offer them value and good content, you can build a great relationship with your list, and enable the list members to become more responsive to your products, offers and promotions. You can call on them whenever you like.

Also, you can offer JV swaps, ad swaps and solo ads to marketers who offer value and good content, this is another way to make some money from owning a list. Be sure to check out all the products and ads you are sending your list, you don't want to shove any old product at them, as they will not be best pleased.

    Hope this helps,

    Jack.

This is exactly what I was thinking when I first read it.

To the OP, honestly it's probably just best to just start trying it, figuring out what works and what doesn't. You'll learn much faster.

There is no need for hypothetical marketing when you're really marketing.

You can continue to promote and sell to that list as long as they stay on it. People buy from those they know, like and trust. Build a relationship with that list and they will continue to buy from you from here on out. If you are not building a list you are throwing away your marketing dollars.

    Hope this helps.

What works best is when you are relevant and useful to your subscribers. Relevant means that you offer them solutions to problems they have and useful means that you can bring something EXTRA to the information they get. For example, if you have a subscriber list of people who want to lose weight, you could review the top 3 courses and compare them saving your subscribers time by only having to pick and buy the course that they want. Or, you could present your case study of how one of those products worked in actual practical experience - prividing insights that they would not have otherwise gotten.

Increased brand awareness in the marketplace, perception of an expert, invitations to joint ventures, webinars, and even paid seminars... plus getting more affiliates to promote your well-known product.

so many advantages, and residual ones at that, there is creating a name for yourself, then there is going viral with awesome original ideas or content or new and super useful original spins on existing content, hands down, maybe no go viral, but appreciated and talked about, great constructive publicity, Definitely

I believe it is better to promote your own products because when someone joins your list they join to hear and learn from YOU. So I personally believe it's easier to sell your own products.

A downside to selling other people's products is that you can start to dilute your list. Imagine the person who is only on one list (ie. yours) and you send them to an affiliate offer they buy... not they are on two and you're starting to compete for space within their inbox.

Yes thats what I always thought as well. Some people promote 3 or 4 affiliate programs a week and over time they would just be creating massive competition for themselves.

A list is a permanent set of traffic. You may lose search engine ranking, it may take time to find affiliates for a new campaign, but your list will remain with you till you can mantain a relationship with them.

Now the biggest question that most people won't answer you. And that is "how to maintain a good relationship with your subscribers?". Well, perhaps it depends on which niche the list was built from, The mentality of the list owner or the real needs of the subscribers. To find a good answer I sometimes subscribe to list of people and look at their emails. To be honest very few of them are really worth reading.

My suggestion, not only build a list, email, spam and expect million dollars overnight but also build relationship and trust in your subscribers. You become their guardian today, tomorrow they'll guard your income.

Thanks to people like Rachel Rofe, E Brian Rose, Frank Kern, Stephen Pierce to help me realize this.

  • Actually list building is a factor in attracting the traffic to your site. This traffic is very vital in event of you having to promote another persons product or even yours. As a matter of fact list building is bound to bring on a long-term business.

I have promoted mostly affiliate products to my lists and only created one product myself so far.

I have found that I get into niches where I feel there is a need for some additional direction.

I have found a lot of very valuable low cost or no cost solutions to common problems in those areas and built a list to inform people and direct them to these things that they may not otherwise easily find.

The value added I give is directing and explaining these things.

I would read a good list building book, maybe something from Dan kennedy as list building also has a lot to do with psychology and how to use it.

      Good idea.

However, I would tell someone to get the basics and just start doing it.

As many successful people will tell you, here and in other fields, you learn far more by doing it.

Do it. Learn a bit. Tweak. Learn more and make it better. Tweak.

I am constantly learning and tweaking what I already have up but the main thing is to DO IT!

List building is essential if you're selling digital products because people need to be put through an affective pre-selling sequence designed to build some trust and rapport before they are ready to buy.

Direct linking to a sales page from a website will get 1 sale in 1000 if you're lucky.
