Why are my PDF's so HUGE?

I have a 3Meg Word doc, but when I make it into a PDF it comes out 20 Meg...what am I doing wrong here? There's quite a few images in it, but it still doesn't make sense to me.

It's probably the images.

The Word doc is pulling them locally but the PDF is rendering them to the file.

  Do you have Photoshop? That would be a great way to fixing the problem because it can save an image AS a pdf and therefore solve your problem.

  Do you have a lot of links in your document? For reasons I can't figure out, Word files with a lot of links (100+) turn out to be huge when converted to PDF also.

  There's less than 5 links in the doc.
  I know it's the images, but the confusing part is that they are not large in the Word doc, only PDF.
  
  If someone can explain why the PDF is 7X the size of the Word doc, that would be great. I don't se why the PDF would be significantly larger than the original file size.

If you did classic screenshots (ie PRTSCR then paste to Word) then you actually grabbed BMP files. These are the largest, nastiest files in the graphics world. You need to drop in JPG or GIF files to keep things small.

In case you don't have screenprint software, here's a GREAT free one I used before Snagit. Screen Print & Capture 32 - Free software downloads and reviews - CNET Download.com

That should get things down to size as long as you save them as JPG or GIF. Usually JPG at 75% is the best way to go.

  The images in the Word doc are jpeg's I inserted.
  
  But to be clear, the issue is not that the WORD doc is too big, it's the the PDF created is 7 times the size of the Word doc.

The only way a PDF can get that big is with images. Also, what are you using to create the PDF? What PDF output settings are you using?
What are the original sizes of the JPG's?

Yes its got to be images! You can compress them smaller but you will lose quality! Most image programs will allow you to do this easily!

I use the Snipping Tool that comes standard with Vista and my images don't change in size when I make my Word document into a PDF. I'm not sure if the snipping tool can be obtained if you don't have Vista but I really like it because I can make a screenshot of ANYTHING on my computer.
