Article Writing: Does an article still get you backlinks to your site if its not about your niche.

When you write an article and submit it, it doesn't matter what the content is does it. It still has a link to your site which in turn gives people the chance to click on the link and it also gives you a backlink right? I am a little confused because I like to write and wan't to develop my skills a little more but don't want to be limited to specific subject matter. I basically want to write what I want, when I want. The main question is "will doing that help my site or will I just be doing it for the fun of it?"

With your approach, I would say "I just will be doing it for the fun of it"

The fact is that people just want to know about THEIR OWN interests. They don't want to know what you think about every single day.

A person that is closed to you, sure (like a parent or a brother), but general public is interested on specific topics.

That's why niches exist. Every person is different and interested on different topics.

When you create a blog you created based on a topic: "dog training, curing acne, weight loss", etc., and people will start coming in because you continue providing value IN A SINGLE TOPIC.

Nobody wants to read a blog that goes like this "Hey I'm Michael and welcome to my blog: What Michael Thinks!"

At least, I would go that route it you want to make money someday from that blog.

    Hope this help you. Cheers!

Right ... but if the site's non-context relevant to your site, the backlink typically isn't worth anything realistic.

It will "help" your site rather than "hindering" it, but the backlinks you get will typically be worth about the same as article directory backlinks are worth. As the saying goes, "100,000 of those backlinks and $3.50 will get you a cappuccino at Starbucks".

(Trying to using article directories for the value of their own backlinks is a fallacy, as explained here. And here.)

      Hey Alexa,
I am trying to get the link "How article directories work" and it can't open the page.
Can you redo that? I would like to read this because I am a little confused on how they work and how backlinks work. I am just trying to figure out ways to get traffic to my site and article directories come up in just about every conversation. As I stated I do like to write but I need to get traffic more than I need to write about the things that I like. Thanks to everyone who has posted so far.

Curious ... it's opening for me: maybe a temporary glitch? Try it again in a few minutes. The first 6 posts or so of the thread may help you ...

Only if you converse with people who imagine that it's a good idea to try to send your potential customers from a search engine to your site via an article directory (where we all lose most of the traffic) rather than directly (when we don't). It's actually a terrible idea based on a huge misunderstanding, and it's not what article directories have ever been for, at all.

Post #6 of that thread expands on this point.

Post #2 is an overview of "how article directories work". Good luck with the link!

Sure, you'll get a link, but don't expect anyone to click on that link. If your site is about, say, vacuum cleaners, and your article is about bird-watching, seeing a link that leads to a vacuum cleaner site is going to look odd and out of place (to say the least!).

And, remember, Google is now giving more priority to relevant links, so if even if your bird watching article gets syndicated by a ton of bird watching blogs, those links are going to be weighed less because they're from sites that have nothing to do with your vacuum cleaner site.

Agreed... Relevant content with a link to your site will make for a more effective link.

I have had some difficulties loading pages on WF today and a little bit yesterday for some reason. No other sites, just this one. May be just that? Right now it is fine, but a little while ago it was too slow and actually timed out on me!
