Domain name same as local company name

There is a local company and their company name is a great exact match for a local search term. Their domain is www dot companyname.ca but .info & .org is available.

Do you know what kind of issues I would get into if I bought .org & .info of their company name?

They are most likely a incorporated business, so I could not register their business name but how does it work for domains, would this be fair game?

Thanks.

Trademark issues if they're using their company name as a trademark also. TMs
don't need to be registered in order to exist.

It ultimately depends on how protective they are of their mark, if any. More so
if you're looking to make money off of that without their permission.

They could sue you for using their trademark. You could try contacting the owner of the trademark and ask them to license to you their trademark . I advise you not to try registering their trademark name in .info or .org as it could cost you a lot in cash in the long run.

Thanks for the info, wont be proceeding with this then.

Another thought what if I went with www dot mycompanyname.com Basically, what if I put another word in-front of the company name.

The comany is "weddingsincity" I would like to do "myweddingsincity", do you see the same type of issue?

You are still dealing with gray areas but a good rule of thumb is: if it's a generic thing like you said, weddings in some city, you are less likely to run into issues, although technically you still could. If it is a specific company name that you CLEARLY copied, such as Honda in some city, it's getting very risky. Best bet is to not copy some entity's name at all if you can find a good way around it.

I don't think there is any kind of problem if you register that exact domain with just dot org or dot info.
but think about future. when you will become popular that could be a issue to damage your business and make you life a living hell. i saw people facing this type of problem. so my suggesting is to choose some other name.
