Voiceovers - what are you looking for?

I have a good friend with a memorable and pleasant voice who is ready to get into voiceover work. He needs to build a portfolio of audio projects.

I thought there may be a need for that on this forum.

His voice could be used for
screen capture videos
audios
podcasts
website greetings
ebooks-to-audio projects

What I'd like to know is, Is there interest? What are you looking for in voiceover work?

It would be best if your friend could join the forum and speak for himself. Whilst I understand your concern for him/her surely a diect approach would get him more attention. Like how many will deal with someone second hand.

As a broadcasting professional of 50 years, I do all my own voice work from my home studio. I would suggest that if your friend wants to get into voiceover work, that he invest a relatively modest amount in his own studio for beginners.

These days, a studio is not an expensive proposition. A decent computer can be built from bare bones kits. A good microphone can be purchased for under $200. A voice processor - essential unless you want to build an expensive, sound-proofed studio - can be obtained for around $500, depending on the make. I'd recommend Symetrix. And a mixer for around $120. Software for recording can be bought for anywhere from $50 to $1000 or more. But I recommend Cool Edit Pro - now Adobe Audition - which includes everything you'll ever need without having to purchase plug-ins.

With such a setup, your friend will be equipped to handle anything in audio.

Jaynet..well..true on your equipment list....but Ive done voiceover work for people online...and without all the equipment you mentioned. Although I do have a decent..not top end mike,,,and Soundforge. and the results have been good.

Is it studio quality? ..hell no...Is it pleasant to listen to without noice..yes...

      are my customers satisfied?..yup

Will I invest in more equipment?,,,depends,,,,most dont really want to pay for voicework and think that its done in one or 2 takes.

Ray...it's not easy to get into the game....but if thats what he wants to do...tell him to get the basics..

To Norma....I'ld be most interested in whatever work you would have...

      Let me know

      Thanks
      Gary

    Hi Raynay:

Hope you are well tonight. I have done voice-over work (former radio disc-jockey) and would tell your friend to understand the difference between the voice-overs for radio/television and the internet. The equipment needed to properly record/edit a voice-over to the specifications of the industry would be a hefty sum but...

There are fantastic audio capture/editing programs for podcasts and internet products/review/videos that are not going to destroy ones budget for a decade.

He needs an excellent microphone and for the audio/capture software a program that:
    Records
    Edits
    Can remove hiss
    Can remove crackles
    Can boost levels
Can have both channels at equal level
    Can easily cut/paste/copy
    Can add effects
Doesn't have a long learning curve.

Find out his budget and have him feel free to contact me.

    Always be well.

There are a lot of tips and tricks to the audio voice over business. Just because someone says you have a nice voice doesn't mean you do!

The best way to get started is to begin recording yourself and listening to the playback. Remember you are your best critic. You get get a bunch of free information on voice over techniques on my blog. or do some searches. I'm sorry your friend can't speak for himself though. That should probably be his first step into looking into voice overs.
