How do I get to be a guest blogger?

I have a really killer short "10 things... " style article I wrote for my niche and I think it may be too good for my own blog

I think it's worthy of being on a major website, or large blog as a guest post and I am hoping it will drive traffic to my web page.

How I do I approach these other big websites to publish my content? Do I send them the article and see if they want to publish it on their site or will they steal it? Is there a place they source writers from that I need to sign up with?

Sorry if this is a newbie question but I'd rather be a fool for a minute than not know forever

Try to find contact information, contact the owner, say you're a fan, and tell him you wrote a great article that you would like to post on his site. In return ask for a link to your site in the "about author" sig. If it's a reputable site you shouldn't have any worry about them swiping it. Especially if all you're asking for in return is a link and a mention.

It might be a little of a "newbie question", but it's definitely an important one, so kudos to you for asking it!!

You might be able to do both. Not all blog owners require exclusive content. If you find one that wants something exclusive, just make sure there's a good reason for giving it to them (like tons of exposure that you couldn't get on your own).

A short, humble, to-the-point email is totally sufficient. Say something like, "I love the spin you put on XYZ post, and I'd love to be included as a guest poster if you'll have me. I was thinking that an post entitled [name of your post] would fit in great. Would you like to publish it?"

When all else fails, think of how you would want someone to approach you, if you were the blog owner.

Don't send the article in your initial correspondence. In most cases, people won't open up emails with attachments from someone they don't know. In even worse cases, your attachment email will land in a spam folder, and the blog owner will never see it!

Plus, by sending posts "blind", it looks like you're just sending the same post to every blog owner you can find - which can be a real turn-off.

If you send your article after you get a response to your initial email, you'll be able to format things the way the blog owner wants. And, your odds of getting lost in the spam folder go down dramatically.

And, the odds of someone "stealing" it are low. Sure, there are jerks out there, but if you're dealing with a quality site, they probably don't act like that

I've heard great things about the Directory of Ezines; it's certainly not mandatory to sign up, though. If you can find opportunities on your own (through a good ol' fashioned Google search), more power to you.

You might really benefit from signing up at My Blog Guest and Cathy Stucker's Blogger Link Up list. Both are free to join, and you'll get to take a look at blog owners who are looking for content and post your own qualifications/available posts.
