I recommend promoting a website that gives you your own affiliate page.
I find this much easier than building my own.

Forgive me for being naive but what do you mean

It's hard to say without having something to look at. Was your opt in rate low? Give some details on what you were unhappy with.

Just make it clean and simple, it does not have to be all singing and dancing as long as it does the job!
A good headline, and some call to action points and your optin form should be enough, you only need to get them interested in what you are offering in exchange for their name and email address.

    Good luck

When people get to your landing page, they should have one of three options: buy something, leave, or opt in (depending on how you have it set up) so that you can promote to them at a later date. Don't use adsense and affiliate marketing on the same page because adsense drives traffic away from your site. I mean, you might make .30 a sale, but you could have missed out on a $30+ sale. Statistically speaking, it takes just as many visitors to get an adsense click as it does to make an affiliate sale. Don't make your paragraphs too long. Use sub-headings.

    Good luck,
    Joey
