google places address change

hey guys

iv been reading this forum for a while now but never posted so heres my first.

i have been tinkering around with seo for about 7 months now as a hobby so to speak for my personal business. after reading some great posts around the web talking about the google proximity lock out i can say i can defiantly see it working for my region. so before a say anything else let me say im a noob lol.

just say i have a plumbing company located outside of new york, but because i offer a traveling service my home etc is based in say trenton ( a suburb outside of the city capital x amount of miles away for new york) but naturally all the traffic is for say plumber new york. But i am ranking well for my little part of the world where i am located trenton. google places rank is A.

well yes the penny has dropped and i have realized i need to have an address in new york city to do any damage for the keywords entitling New york.

So i have made arrangements to have a real and true physical address in new york ( so to speak ) and will be taking possession within a couple of weeks.

so my question is , what is the best methods / strategies i should use when updating my address within google places.

from what i know i should be doing :

1. change address and update places listing with new keywords relating to new city etc then wait for code to arrive.

this is dont know about should i just change the address and wait or revamp and optimize the lot in one sitting pictures, videos & address etc

2. edit website keywords for new related city along with citation on each page.

3.sift through all citation sources and amend to reflect new changes

also i have another question sorry. also i am ranking on the first page of google 10th for "plumber new york" ( so to speak) is this a decent achievement like i dont see it as one untill im first LOL.

hope u can help me out some guys

thanks glennb

WOW - you actually got "plumber new york!" Great achievement, dude!

But for your Google places, make a new page, with different keywords and images, you should also display a video or two. Get videos made at fiver (dot) com.

You can add up to 10 locations without having to contact Google.

Won't you still have the same issues though if you are not in downtown New York?

As the A listing always goes to the company that is closet to down doesn't it?

      Not in my testing.

Go play with it. You will see what I mean.

One theory has been that closest to the post office in a zip code wins, and that is not true either.

I have been flat out playing with it.

I did go to spot A for a little while and now I am back at c as I am the third closest to the centre of town for my category.

If you have something that is working to get that A spot, please let us all know.

          Nothing concrete.

I have been able to move folks, just by getting reviews of the target business in sites like Yelp. But, even that is inconsistently effective.

ha thanks ! well it isnt actually plumber new york but it is a short keyword with the city name. google seems to say that there is 9000 local searchs a month, and 2 million results.

sorry but a little confused haha,

so i just start a new page and keep a second listing for "trenton" then open up a new listing for new york...

wont the citation and business names get jumbled and google will think of bad play ? like it would be great to rank twice as technically i have 2 operation locations but thats gotta be walking the line?

I have tested different niches in different cities, looking for the common denominator.

I don't yet know the right answer, but I am 100% convinced that the proximity rule is a myth.

Query: Hair Salons Oklahoma City OK

Mapping the locations as concentric circles from the middle of town, we get the following results: A, H, G, J, F, E, B, C, D, I

Yet, all of the little dots are "hair salons" that did not make the Top 10 List.

Mapping the results by Stars and Reviews, we get:

          A. 4 Stars, 21 Reviews
          B. 4 Stars, 14 Reviews
          C. 3 Stars, 5 Reviews
          D. 3 Stars, 18 Reviews
          E. 0 Stars, 2 Reviews
          F. 0 Stars, 3 Reviews
          G. 0 Stars, 4 Reviews
          H. 0 Stars, 14 Reviews
          I. 0 Stars, 3 Reviews
          J. 0 Stars, 1 Reviews

The only thing that follows any consistency is the number of Stars with the given results. Everything else is a crap shoot.

    Now that is proof.

It looks like anyone with a Google account and logged in, can select the number of stars they give to each business.

So, to get more stars, you need more people with Google accounts hitting the star rating button.

So it really is as simple as that to get a site to the A position in Google places?

Simply get someone to log on and click say on 4 stars and it will get four stars?

I haven't yet tested it to my complete satisfaction.

It looks to be that way...

But I reserve the right to not take a stand, in order to prevent myself from looking like a total and utter fool.

              LOL

Technically, all I have proven is that the proximity rule is smoke and mirrors.

And I have shown that reviews are not the be-all, end-all of Google Local.

Granted, when we know what does not work, we come closer to the truth of the issue.

Yet, we still don't know with any absolution that we have found "what does work." :p

                Hey Bill,

I just googled Hair Salons Oklahoma City OK from over here in New Zealand and the A spot 12200 Warwick Drive
                Oklahoma City
                (405) 722-3336
Eden Salon - AVEDA Hair & Body - Oklaho had no stars but B and C both had four. Hmm this Google places thing is so frustrating.

                  You prove my point.

Unless a particular criteria works across all listings, then it is not the driving factor.

If Stars were the answer, that guy would not rank on top of you.

Until we have a factor in front of us that works in every location, with every search, and with consistent results, then we do not yet have the right answer. :p

So far, we have only applied evidence to what it "is not". Now for the fun of trying to figure out "what is".

I manage google places for my clients, so let me just weigh in on this one.

First of all though I want to say that ranking Google Places is not rocket science. It's useless to dredge the local listings in other cities and make up "theories" about why location X ranks higher than location Z even when Z has 943 great reviews. Who cares. It's all a waste of time for you because you don't give a **** about Oklahoma - right? Good, let's move on

If you're opening a new store in a new city with a new physical address and a new phone number, you most certainly do not want to change what you already have in place for your current location. This new store is a new location and should have its own listings, reviews, places page, and citations.

Do these things in this order:

    1. Make a new page on your website about the area you're servicing. Make it say something like yourwebsite.com/cityname. Put your keywords in there and geotag it with a kml file and put some bullet points about what you do and all that crap. A couple pictures of the location wouldn't hurt. Include the new name/addy/phone in all the pages that are relevant to yourwebsite.com/cityname. make sure you add the new NAP to the homepage - "now serving cityname: NAP"

Log into google webmaster tools and add this new page to your site and then ping it a couple times a week to make sure you get it indexed. Wait a few days.

    2. Go to getlisted.org or if you have $500/year go to yext.com and start doing your listings on the big 8 for this new location. This is a PITA but you have to do it.

    3. Once you're at at least 50% on getlisted or Yext is done taking your money then go to Google and make a new location for your business. They'll have to send you a postcard (like bing will, but slower) so once you get the card put your pin in there, and get activated.

    4. Add all the relevant details into your new GP page like pictures and all, then save it.

    5. You should do whatever it is you would normally do to boost the organic results of yourwebsite.com/cityname at this time.

    6. If you already have one location then you know the importance of reviews, so you should scale this strategy for your new location. Depending on the location and niche you should expect to be on and off the front page by month 2 and if your review volume holds up I would expect you to be dominating at least A, B, C by month 3 and beyond.
