What's the best way to approach analyzing traffic?

Hi all
I've gotten really good at building and niche locating, but I still am very weak in looking at my traffic, and analyzing what I should do. And then trying to improve the results of a site.

Maybe I'm over complicating it, but I always like to find the cardinal rules for stuff.

Some people stay away from Google Analytics if they have any automated content coming in, even good content. Is that necessarily true?

I just have to get stronger in my understanding of this, and would welcome anybody's input.

Thanks!
Mark

Well, it doesn't have to be Google Analytics. Anything to tell you information such as incoming Google search terms, top referrals, most popular pages, etc. A good alternative is Awstats.

    It's pretty simple:
    - if you're doing well on a particular search term --> do some more
    - if you have a particular popular page --> do some more
    - if you have a few particularly good traffic sources --> leverage them more

You can install the statpress plugin on your domain. Its results are not too accurate like google analytics but it is free and easy to install

Thanks guys! I'm launching a new set of sites. Old fashioned good content and back to 1999.

I spent 10 years trying to learn to bake excellent bread. I took classed, bought books, etc.

Lots of crap. Then I found the GRAIL.
IF you've ever wanted to bake bread, just do this.
      http://www.nytimes.com/2006/11/08/dining/081mrex.html

People will think you trained in France.

TIME. 4 simple ingredients. TIME. DO NOT OVER WORK the dough. TIME.

I have an inkling that all of the bread machines just got unplugged by google.

Geez I get tired of my own metaphors. :-)
And now I live in the rural Philippines where it's too darn hot to bake.
      But NOT work.

I recently started using GetClicky on all of my sites. In my opinion it is the easiest to manage and gives you loads more info than some of the other I've tried. And it gives you up to the second stats, unlike GA. AND I've got a cool little widget for my Android phone! Haha.

Go take a look at easy tracker pro. It helps you keep track of where every click and sale comes from.

The simpliest way is to install the jetpack plugin from wordpress. One of the item in the pack is the wordpress stats. It provide you with an easy way to analyze your traffic. If you need more advance analysis, I will suggest Google Analytics.
