Is there a link you can point us to? Unfortunately I'm in one of those states that's been banned from working with Amazon, so whenever I see an update come across relating to Amazon Associates, I raise a brow... hoping that one day I'll be allowed to promote Amazon products.

    Thanks,
    Elizabeth

    February 2, 2012 version
"A "Session" begins when a customer clicks through a Special Link on your site to the Amazon Site and ends upon the first to occur of the following: (x) 24 hours (except in the case of Special Links to the myhabit.com site, in which case 30 days) elapses from that click; (y) the customer places an order for a Product that is not a Digital Product; or (z) the customer follows a link to the Amazon Site that is not your Special Link."

"A "Session" begins when a customer clicks through a Special Link on your site to the Amazon Site and ends upon the first to occur of the following: (x) 24 hours elapses from the customer’s initial click-through; (y) the customer places an order for a Product that is not a Digital Product; or (z) the customer follows a link to the Amazon Site that is formatted with an Associate’s tag that is not assigned to you."
I bolded the main difference there.

That kind of sucks; it looks like Amazon will wipe your associates cookie if the user clicks on ANY Amazon link, not just a link with a different associate's tag.

Maybe not a huge deal, but will reduce some commissions for sure.

The change for MyHabit going from 24 hours to 30 days is interesting for some, I bet...

      errr...
      (z) the customer follows a link to the Amazon Site that is not your Special Link."

And how is "your special link" defined?

So if I have a product on my site that leads to abc, but while on amazon customer buys product xyz, does that mean that I get no commission?
      That would suck!

Does this apply to all countries?

Am I right in thinking this will massively reduce revenue? So if a user goes direct to the amazon site the following day without following one of my links I do not get the commission?

There's also been a change regarding the way you can link:

"In addition, you must not use a link shortening service in a manner that makes it unclear that you are linking to an Amazon Site."
I would imagine this means no more redirecting links using "go" codes, etc.

Wow, good catch. I missed that. It doesn't exactly say that you can't use URL shorteners, but says you can't use it in a misleading way. I suppose if you have a link that states that it's an Amazon link and uses an URL shortener you are probably fine.

That's how it's always been. The difference now is that the second link the user clicks doesn't necessarily have to be an affiliate link, just a link to Amazon.

The way I interpret it is that you still get commissions on item xyz if the user clicks through your link to item abc. That quote is talking about the "session" and how it begins and ends.

However, I believe it means that if the user clicks your link to item abc and is then locked to your 24-hour cookie, but then clicks another Amazon link to item xyz, even if it doesn't have an associate's tag, your cookie is gone.

I don't think that scenario happens very often anyway, but it probably happens sometimes.

This could mean a massive loss in revenue for passive sales.

remember guys, amazon is not the only affiliate program out there. there the biggest retail that as the buying power on the planet..... walmart.

    But.....

To really get some real money online is to start by "Branding". Case in point look at the past week, facebook was started in college dorm room. and today it was going public.
