Domains like 2012.com going to waste...

Can anyone tell me the logic behind owning really expensive domain names and not doing a darn thing with them??

Is there some great business angle that I don't know about?

At least with other domains you can let them sit there, but a domain with something like 2012.com - we are already on the 2nd month of the year and still no site, lol.

Anyways, just wondering if anyone can shed any light on this.

Whether you believe in anything to do with 2012 or not, it is significant because it gets close to 250,000 exact local searches a month.

Somebody bought it a few months ago, not for cheap I'm sure, and it's just letting it sit there. But the point is that many worthy domain names that could at least make money by being parked are just left abandoned.

Come to think of it, it's similar to very valuable property here in San Francisco just left to sit, no selling or renting them for years and years. Some people just have so much money and they don't care about abandoning things. I would at least let help others out help themselves instead of just abandoning valuable property. I guess everyone is different.

The Mayans had a calendar which extended far into the future. The Mayan calendar runs out in December of 2012 so that has led to some crazies saying they had some sort of foresight and that 2012 will be the end of the world. The last day of the Mayan calendar means that is the last day of our existence, they think. This is the reason that movie with John Cusack was called "2012." Because of that whole thing...

The Mayan calendar doesn't "run out". It just marks the end of the 13th cycle or b’ak’tun which began on August 11, 3114 BC, and the start of the fourteenth b’ak’tun. No big deal. The Mayans never did "prophesy" any such ending of the world, and their own civilization collapsed before 900 AD without prior notice.

Yep. Exactly. I was just telling you why people would think it's significant, not that is has any basis. But obviously you knew already. The whole long count calendar running out, completing of the cycle, whatever you want to call it, that's what the whole doomsday 2012 **** is about. I am figuring you knew that?

Just like everyone was celebrating the beginning of the new millenium in 2000 but we were all celebrating a year early. The new millenium started in 2001.

Yep. Exactly. The money in this niche will be running out when it expires on 12/21/2012, but there will be more opportunities with coming attractions such as global upheavals, disasters, destruction, catastrophes, cataclysms, asteroid impacts, UFO visitations, conspiracies, and more ... for 2013 ... and beyond ....

If you think that's bad I once saw a case where someone spent a large sum of money for a domain name and months later it was just sitting there with nothing on it.

People just don't have the time to take action on them.

I've got a ton that I'd love to develop - but have to prioritise.

Just because you have an awesome domain doesn't straight away mean the business behind it will be successful... so the owner is risking time....

You know what's funny? If you check some "year" domains you'll find all of them initially registered in 1996-97.

One smart domainer there - and he probably sells one every year...for the following year, that is.

2008.com had a good site - not many other showing up.

      Forget 2013.com - it's not available. 2020.com was registered in 1995 - 2030.com was registered in 1993.

The person who owns this site will more than likely make a profit from it somewhere down the line. I'm not big on domain building (although i should cause i'm a pretty good web designer). But we'll see with 2012.com.

Year 2012 is significant due to the rumours saying that the word would end on dec 21 2012. There are still significant amount of searches that these website owners can take advantage of . I suppose by the end of this year this volume will grow tremendously and Christiani i suppose this traffic will pay off the domain owners by the time this year passes.

Both the .com and the .net are undeveloped. This guy wrote a long article on it.

www.2012.com remains shrouded in a mystery as the site itself is unreachable - Economic Times

    tis a waste

As I wrote a while ago when 2012.com was discussed elsewhere, the domain will continue to have value as long as there are domains. A person with a good sense of history can fill every day's page with the historic events of that day. In the future this domain can be used for history classes and such.

Maybe the next few years are taken. But what about 1912.com? Every year has had events on each day. So in principle all year domains have intrinsic value.

While estibot cannot be relied on to give completely accurate appraisals, it's rare that estibot thinks a domain is worth this much, unless of course you type in premium one word dictionary domains.

2011.com redirects to a website that allows you to buy goods internationally... is that any better than not using the domain at all? Personally I don't see much value in a domain name like that -- I can't see many people typing it in but maybe I am wrong.

There's plenty of other domains I would much rather own.

An individual can easily use a domain name to its maximum extent. for example 2012.com, happenings in various countries, issues worldwide in 2012, latest inventions of 2012 etc can be posted so that it can attract customers to that particular domain name.
