They are called Rich Snippets. You basically add certain markup language to your page that the Google search engine can then read and use in the search results.

You can read more about them here:

Yeah, it's quite simple if you are using Wordpress. I use the GD Star Rating Wordpress plugin:

GD Star Rating | A WordPress Rating System | »

That plugin is all setup to work with Rich Snippets.

When I search my posts using the plugin on Google it will show up the star rating and also the number of people who have voted, etc, just like in your example above.

      Hi,
I just installed this plugin and set it up. Do I need to do anything other than set it up within wordpress to get the stars to show in the search engines? As of now I don't see them. Do I need to add markup language to the html of the page that I want the stars to show for in the search engines? If so what language needs to be added. I can see the stars on the correct page of my website, but not in the search engines. Sorry for all the questions, but this is a cool little trick I'd to take advantage of.

      Thanks

      Eric

Eric, no, you don't need to do anything else apart from install the plugin. As with any other changes you make to your website, they do not update on Google immediately. Google only comes and indexes your site every so often so you will need to wait until the next update before changes are reflected in Google.

I'm also not certain if you need to have at least 1 vote for the stars to show up. Obviously there's not much point in showing a blank rating so you might just want to vote for your page yourself or ask some friends or family to vote for it.

Other than that, the rest should all happen automatically.

In the local results, each logged-in Google account can vote on a single search listing also, from within Google's search results.
