Where do you do your work?

I have a study and work from home (doing the IM gig full time since 2008). About 6 months ago I decked out the entire study in custom made furniture and it makes it a pleasure to spend time in there.

I figure if I am going to spent a lot of time in there I should be comfortable.

I do most of my work from home, but last week I started working for a marketing firm in a nearby city. I work in a shared office there and I've found that I'm 10x more productive. I'm thinking about leasing my own office in the same building, but that would be nothing more than a luxury considering I have plenty of space in the shared office.

My advice for anyone struggling to be productive, switch up the scenery every now and then. Maybe go to the library or a Starbucks every couple days, or even rearrange your home office every month or so. Sounds weird but it always helps me when I find myself slacking.

I've worked at home, in my "office" (a large corner of the main living room) for a few years now. I would have a computer in this spot even if I were to set up a separate office, so, what's the point? :p

These days, I'm using a stand up desk. And it's awesome. I got a little tired of sitting down all day; now, I can alternate between sitting and standing at my leisure.

Mainly either from home when the family is out, or the library.

The library is great for me. They have a study room that you can use with a closed door for a 2 hour period. If no one else is asking for the room, you can go until closing time. This is usually easiest during the week. On the weekends typically someone will request the room.

You've got wi-fi, nobody interrupting you, and a library FULL of reference books if you want to change things up.

Oh yeah, they have a gourmet coffee machine that costs $1 per cup, as opposed to the coffee shop that has $5 coffee with lots of people swarmin around distracting you.

Don't everybody show up at my library now and take away my study room.

I totally agree. Two days a week I go to the library for 5-8 hours at a time. I started doing this mostly because I find that even the happy noises of my three kids playing around the house is very distracting. I can't always get to the quiet of the library, so when I am there I intentionally work on those things that take a good deal of focus.

When I'm at home I work in the office, at the kitchen table, or in the living room in front of a fire - it sort of depends on what I'm trying to get done and whether I need to be available to the kids or not.

On my homework table my parents put aside for me in the office next to their table and my twins table (who only facebooks and chats

... i guess maybe one day if I make it big I would love to build my own office

sometimes after school i go to my moms work and i do my homework in a nice conference room

and if I have some im time thats a great spot.. fast internet good laptops ect...

I work at home, but my Internet connection is a tethered Droid at home, since I live in the country. When I need to upload and download any significant size or amount of files, I go to the library or Starbucks, depending on whether or not I feel like a great cup of coffee. The library is less distracting.

For some it's almost impossible to work from home.

Totally depends on your own personal circumstances. If you have a family, then you definitely need to get an office if you can afford to.

Those serious IMers who work from home, dunno how they do it to be honest.

I have no office (as of yet ) and found that the local library has wireless internet so rather then going to a starbucks or Mc Cafe I decide to go where poeple do seem to be any more where there is actual books.

Wherever I am really.

Sometimes at home, somtimes go to a relatives or my girlfriends, sometimes go to a coffee shop.

Moving in a new home in April and will have a home office. I've been looking at listings and have discovered can get cute little office spaces for around £30-£50 a week which is something I'd like to expand into later in the year.

I really enjoy spending time with people while I'm working. Even if they're just siting watching TV or reading a book I find it a nice environment and can share those tiny succeses

Im literally (almost) sitting in the kitchen.

Its ridiculous really, but temporary. However its kinda handy, given that I eat 6 meals a day :0/

I work from all over. I have an office in my home. Sometimes I do work from meetings with associates in their offices, from airports, Eastern Europe. Where ever I happen to be when I need to get something done.

My "Office" at home is a room dedicated to two things.

1- a place where I can work on or offline with limited interruptions
2- a place to store inventory of merchandise (yes, I deal in physical as well as electronic goods)

I try to get away from the office when I can. Coming from an IT background originally, I get a little overzealous when applying my security to my computer and flash drives though.

I work from home.

My computer is in one corner of the living room, next to the kitchen

I do most of my IM, learning, reading, writing and computer surfing work while my son is at school. So I have an 8.30 to 4 workday during the week.

I work from home where I have a room dedicated to an office - so every morning I go to work :-)
The only bad thing with working from home is that you are always nearby and because of that - you tend to be 'on-call' most of the time. But at least I have been able to juggle household, kids and husband this way :-)
