Today I wrote the 1000th issue of my newsletter, Kickstart Today. It all started on October 1st 2002 and there is no end in sight!

For anybody thinking about writing a newsletter - or ezine if you prefer - here are some thought from the front line...

During the 1000 issues of Kickstart there have been many times when I was tempted to give up. Times when my online income just didn't seem to want to happen; times when I received hurtful and spiteful emails; times when I wondered if it was worth it.

There were even times when I lost the will and the inspiration to write.

But those times passed. The rollercoaster that is life saw to it that for every bad day there were dozens of wonderful days to more than redress the balance.

Great days when I made more money in a few hours than I'd ever made in a month in my previous high-flyer career. Wonderful days when readers sent me emails of thanks. Superb days when the words just seemed to flow from someone else's mind. Fantastic days when I knew at the very heart of my being that online marketing and email communicating was the only thing I really ever want to do.

And of course the very best days when my family started reading the stuff I write and saying 'Hey, I enjoyed reading Kickstart this morning"!

Online marketing in general, and newsletter publishing in particular are not the easiest ways to make a living, but they are certainly ones that I'd highly recommend to anyone. It takes a while to find your feet - the only overnight successes in this business are the ones who have been working up to it for a long time - but I'd recommend this life to anyone.

Roll on the next 1000 issues!

If there is a message at all in all this it can best be summed up by a goverment poster that was printed in the UK just before the outbreak of World War 2. It was never used and millions of copies of it were destroyed after the war. As far as anyone knows, only two copies survived. It simply said:

Keep Calm
and
Carry On

Seems like good advice for Internet marketers 70 years on.

    Congratulations Martin.

1,000 issues in almost six and one half years
works out at approximately 3 issues per week.

Just think, if you'd worked twice as hard you
could be celebrating your 2,000th issue and
    double your income!

Seriously, you've set a great benchmark for
other ezine publishers to aim for. Great job!

    Congratulations Martin,

yours is one of the few that I've setup a filter to delete... errm, direct it into
its own folder so it doesn't get lost in a sea of other emails.

You might wanna take a look at your tags on this post though

    Congratulations Martin,

Thank you for the gifts too!

Not only have I read almost all 1000, but I have purchased most of your products and have been pleased with all.

I find your writing style quite refreshing and so I save yours for last after I wade through the rest.

I am looking forward to the next 1000. But I also agree with John that you really should step it up a little and send me one every day

If you think Martin's writing 1000 copies of an ezine is a feat, I can outdo that. I've READ all 1000 editions. The toil, the strain, the optician bills.

I don't think it's possible to meet a nicer, more generous person than Martin. I think his greatest skill is his ability to provide a structured analysis of the free-flowing IM market. He makes a great friend too.

      I thought he'd automated that?

Wasn't there talk about the Kickstart Daily Friend Adder
getting people banned from several social sites and the
      local pub in Sidcup?

      :p

    Pearson,

Surely you've realised by now that it's all plagiarized and
    regurgitated stuff.

For example remember that issue when Martin told us

"as I sit by my office window with the sun streaming in, the
heatwave continues relentlessly. My cat is slumped on my
desk watching me type this newsletter in the blistering
    heat ... "

I happened to be passing through a non-sunny Sidcup that
very morning. Through a raging blizzard and ten inches of
    snow.

    How come ?

Well, when generating the newsletter he had clicked on his Summer
Archive file instead of the Winter one.

And there's other revelations I can tell you about.

Listen - don't be surprised if the free signup to KickStart
triggers off a recurring Paypal subscription.

Aw Harvey -- you've given away my biggest IM secret! But wait ... didn't I learn about it in your Ultimate Supertip book?

Pearson -- you've read all 1000 issues? You deserve a medal. Even I haven't done that!

Congratulations. Re war time slogans, there was one that Churchill had written but he was only going to use AFTER England was invaded:

"You can always take one with you"

    I think it just shows the absolute determination of the time and I think that it is that sort of determination you need to succeed online. In other words;

    "Never, EVER, give up"

    Here's to the next 1000!

    All the very best, Allen

I've been reading Kickstart for years, I can't even remember how I found it, but I can honestly say its the one email I read without fail.

I've tried to emulate it, but will never succeed because I don't have Martin's gift of writing.

Martin promised me once that I could be the second Mrs Avis, (he treats the first one beautifully), but he's never made good on his promise,

Seriously Martin is one of the loveliest people I know. A gentleman in the true sense of the word.
