    Hi CED59,

Does she have a lot of graphics in the pdf? If so, depending on which programme she used to write it, she can reduce the size of the graphics before converting it to pdf.

In MS Word, if you click on the picture, the Picture Tool Bar will come up. Choose the option that says "Compress" and select the option "All Pictures". Drop the size to email or web resolution. That should decrease the size of the book.

I wonder if this is even possible, the .pdf is 220mb... getting it below 50mb seems virtually impossible

going to see what we can do though

Unless it's specifically a picture book, there is no reason for a PDF to be over 50MB.

In addition to Diana's suggestion above...

Make sure any images are sized/scaled OUTSIDE of the publishing package and are at 75dpi instead of 300.

Could your GF break the book up into more than one part? Then you could be selling more than one book on Amazon too.

I recently did this for a client of mine that had a huge book. It broke down into 7 chapters really well and it sells well too.

It will help build your brand if you have more than one book out too.

.pdf tend not to produce a good ebook with automated conversion

Pictures on the ebooks just need to be 72dpi. This is the resolution you would use of the Web. The Kindle is basically a very basic Web browser.

Amazon issue a delivery charge if your files are large. The sort of ebook that this will produce will create a huge delivery charge.

Picture books in general tend not to convert well to .mobi because of all the resizing of the pictures and the fluid nature of the text.

hey guys, thanks for your help... we converted it to a .mobi file via calibre (mac)
    the .pdf was ~220mb
    the .mobi was ~38mb

what a difference... pretty sure amazon takes .mobi files.. we'll see!

If that doesn't work, try going to to Mobipocket.com and downloading their file converter. It'll convert to .mobi file extensions and others file extensions that are compatible with Kindle and Sony Ebook Reader.
