Most Useless Question in Internet Marketing

...is: "can you just tell me ABOUT how long until I start seeing some money?"

No, I can't.

I don't care which system it is or how wonderful you think you are - every single person is going to have a totally different journey in Internet Marketing.

Some will make money the very DAY they implement a system (maybe the same day they even bought a course teaching it!)

Some will take about a week.

Some a month.

Some - NEVER!

Every system I've ever seen has variables on ABOUT how long it will take to make money, including:

The degree of your ability to follow directions.

Some people think they're just fine, but they really skip steps all over the place or can't figure out something even when it's listed with screen shots and step by step instructions.

Your talent in implementing this method.

I had someone ask me how long until he makes money selling PLR. His email was unreadable. I advised him to not pursue PLR writing and his follow up email was, "but how long until I would make money." Um...never! The talen wasn't there.

The time you have to devote to it.

Some of you have 10 minutes a day and work 80 hours at a real J-O-B offline. Some of you have 20 hours and are content to live on 4 hours of sleep. Many are in between.

Fate.

Fate plays a role. Luck - whatever you want to call it. I had some ghostwriting students ask around and not be able to find a client and some hit the jackpot and got huge orders right off the bat. Just so happened they contacted the right person at the right time.

Instead of asking ABOUT how long until you make money with a method...

...just research whether it's a method that, with YOUR circumstances (time, talent and all that jazz), YOU could make money with it. Whoever you're asking won't know the answer as good as you will. And don't email them a list like this: "I have 3 hours to devote to this, and I'm a good graphic designer."

First of all, you might not be considered good to ME. I know lots of people who think their graphics are wonderful and I think they suck.

Second of all, 3 hours tells me NOTHING. I can write 15 pages of content in 3 hours. Some people can write 1 page in 3 hours.

Only you will find the answer to the question above and sometimes that just means you have to TRY and DO IT and SEE if it works out for you.

There have been several things I tackled and wound up sucking at or not liking. Some things I struggled with for a long time that made me zip, zero, zilch! Some things I implement fast and furious and cash in on the same day. (Things others would be struggling with and not make money with).

As always, Tiffany, right on the money. There are so many variables that can't be factored in to that type of question.

Reminds me of trying to give travel estimates in Los Angeles or Dallas versus rural America...yeah, it may be 5 miles on the map, but it could be 5 minutes or 5 hours, depending on the circumstances in each area.

Time estimates are too individual to be quantifiable. The one thing that is certain is that with any plan, action is the key success step. If it takes you 3 hours, or 3 days, implement the action steps. Forward progress is still progress, regardless of the time required. But without execution, you are just spinning your wheels, getting nowhere fast...or slow, doesn't really matter in that case, does it?

No matter online or off, people ask this question ALL the time of those generating an income. I had this conversation with more people than I can count. And you're right Tiffany, the only thing I could tell them for sure is how long it took ME....or how long it took a friend of mine who was earning income...and everyone varies.

And I know that if you give someone a general idea...they'll swear you lied to them if it takes one day later than your best guesstimate!!

Thanks for doing this post. You've offered a place for money-earning warriors to send people when THEY get asked that same question....which will save their time for the more important questions!!

Thanks for this post... Was just having this same discussion in a thread the other day. It's simply not possible to tell someone when they will make money. We try to set realistic expectations, but often people just want the "feel good" answer. Again, just another reason people give up.

*clapping hands high in the air* I saw a cartoon the other day and it showed two guys digging through a wall and there was a heap of gold on the other side. One guy gave up and you could see he was inches away from breaking through the wall, the other guy was sweating with a big smile on his face and kept going. Life is about learning, learning what works, what doesn't, and when to move on. Check on Youtube there is an amazing video about some of the most famous people in the world who were told they would never make anything of themselves...well I guess they proved everyone wrong. I remember when I finally bought Joel Comm's book about AdSense, and I asked him on his blog, how many articles I should have online to make money with AdSense.

He never answered me, and I thought that was weird.

Later I found out that there IS no answer to that question

I guess we're just impatient people and want to have a realistic goal to motivate us.

"Yeah, I can do that! It will only take me 15 minutes per day, 7 1/2 day, and then I'll make $1,987.43".

Wouldn't it just be nice? LOL

But you're right, Tiff. That is totally individual, depending on a lot of factors.

I love the "Lion and the two Internet Marketers" story about success...

The story goes that there were two Internet marketers traveling through the African savannah when they unexpectedly turned a corner and came face to face with a hungry lion.

As the lion began to circle them, the first Internet marketer sat down on a nearby rock, took off his hiking boots and started putting on a pair of sneakers which he had been carrying in his backpack.

The second Internet marketer looked puzzled and said, “What are you doing, you’ll never be able to outrun a lion”

The first Internet marketer looked up and replied, “I don’t need to outrun the lion, I just need to outrun you!”

The moral of this story is that in order to obtain a front page ranking in Google, you don’t need a perfect website, you just need to be a little bit better than your competition.

If there was a quantifiable time limit to earning an income, it is my thinking that that would make one heck of a WSO, would sell millions of copies and then we'd all be rich!

The only difference between YOU and ME is the "YOU" and "ME". :p

The reality is that you may do better or worse than me, and I may do better or worse than you.

No one can match my results, because the one thing that they are missing is that they are not ME. They don't have my experience, knowledge and work ethic, and for some that will be an advantage, while for others, it will be a disadvantage.

There is nothing wrong with that... It is just the way it is....

    Nice, Tiffany.

All of us have to learn what our limits are, and sometimes it helps to have someone really honest and upfront about it. Maybe we all need to take advantage of good advice to recognize opportunities. Perhaps, most important, is to take responsibility for ourselves and our actions.

Excellent post, Tiffany. I find the biggest deterant in making money is not taking action. I, myself have been guilty of this on a few occasions. I have started courses and never finished them, either because something else came along (that dreaded shiny object), or I just found it was not really up my alley. Fortunately I have narrowed my focus this year, and I am making forward progress at long last. I am doing what I enjoy instead of what everyone else seems to be doing.

I asked this very question many times to many different marketers/gurus. I even asked Tiffany quite some time ago.

My specific question was, "What can I reasonably expect over one, two, three and four months?"

I received two answers. The first came from sellers of courses, (which includes Tiffany.) The answer is basically, "That depends on the person as there are too many variables."

The second answer came from coaching teachers. These are big names in the business and you would recognize their names if I listed them here. Most of these people have very successful WSOs when they launch one. Their coaching price ranges from as little as $300/month to over $20,000/month. Each of their answers varied a little, but they were very specific with their numbers and time frames. Their answers sounded like this: "You may receive an income during your first month, your second month for sure. By the end of the 4th month, you should have a monthly income of $8,000, but for sure it will be at least $4,000."

The actual numbers varied a little bit, but the four month period was pretty standard. They all seemed to be in the same ball-park.

Of course, the coaches do expect the students to follow the plan and meet reasonable deadlines.

Success of a course really depends on the person following the plan. But, where a course can leave a student hanging, a coach teaching the same exact steps will increase the time for success as well as the level of success the student reaches.

There is a personal interaction with a coach that is not present with most courses sold. Coaches can get you over the humps much faster. For example, a course might suggest you create a simple web page and add a PayPal button. If the course doesn't show you how it's done in a way you understand, you could spend many hours trying to find the answer or waiting on responses from the support forum or email support.

However, a good coach will walk you through it sooner and more quickly.

Most of the time, people who are asking this question, ask because money is an issue and paying a coach may not be an option.

The next best thing I can think of is to team up with others learning/doing the same course. It is far easier said than done. It is best if you can find someone local or someone you have regular contact through a Skype type service.

Before Tiffany jumps on this, I am not here to promote coaching or any coach. (I am NOT a coach, so don't ask.)

There are bad coaching programs. Tiffany can probably name a dozen "coaches" who sell you a mega-coaching package and then turn it over to someone else to handle. So you buy coaching from Johnny Guru and he turns you over to a script kiddie who tries to answer questions from a database of answers. You never have access to Johnny Guru again.

    Hey Tiffany,

You're right on the money with this one.

Another one that always amazes me is where people have waited until they're in a desperate financial situation and then want to "start making a lot of money on the internet" overnight.

Heck... You can't even do that with a job in a fast food joint.... You've got to "learn the ropes" for awhile before they're going to let you even flip a burger!

Just goes to show you that really most people want a magic bullet...they want guarantees... and there are no guarantees in life period. I agree that many people start a business blindly without thinking the process through as well as asking themselves if they really have the expertise or the talent or the gosh darn gumption to get the job done.

One thing I know about myself, is that I have the discipline and willpower to keep going until I achieve the results I want...and then I will have a new equally challenging goal to push forward on. Life is about getting better and better!

    Hi Tiff,

As typical you are right on target.

It has taken me over 3 years to realize some decent returns. I changed focus a lot before I finally settled on something that not only feeds my soul, but brings in some money as well. So, I would like to add, KEEP YOUR FOCUS! If you go around chasing every shiny new object, you will not likely make very much, if any, money.

I'm still not where I want to be, but I'm getting there. Yes, I have a full-time job, but I keep at it and will eventually move out of that job into the internet world full-time. I'm on track to accomplish that this year.

Thanks for all your valuable insight!

    5. What ever happened to that Guru Barney Swartz?
    6. I'm desperate, what should I do?
    7. I Need a mentor NOW!
    8. What would you do with $200?

You are right on the nose, Tiff. In all walks of life, people are asking how long and it all depends upon them. An example (mind you I work with beadwork a lot), a newbie to beading will ask how long it takes to make a piece. Well, the answer would depend on how long it takes them to bead a piece with their expertise. It would differ from what it would take me with more experience. I have to tell them that I don't know how long it would take.

I have to admit that it is taking me a long time but I still have the habit of chasing the next shiney object even though I try not to. I am trying more than ever to focus this year.

Debra, even getting a job is not a guarantee anymore. Jobs are getting harder to get and the hours are not always there.

Not that they can't or don't deserve to, but it's a good indicator that they don't understand the complexity of what they're getting into. In other words, if they think that there is one simple answer to that question, and they don't even see the variables you're talking about.... My advice to newbies is to be extremely honest about ones existing skills. Sure, you can learn new skills, but that takes time, and sometimes won't work, so why not find a method which matches what you CAN do?

A particular example is advertising copy. So many IM methods require strong ad copy if they are to make any money (even when they tell you they don't). If you have a huge ego and can persuade absolutely anyone to do absolutely anything you tell them, then by all means go ahead with a method that requires sales copy and you will make a fortune, but if that doesn't describe you, then writing advertising copy that will actually sell, will be difficult or maybe impossible for you. Don't believe anyone who tells you that they can teach you to write great sales copy . . . you could write the exact same words they do, and theirs will sell and yours won't if your personality disagrees with what you write. But, why not choose a method which DOESN'T require sales copy (like Amazon, where honesty beats hype, see my Sig!), if you're not already a proven successful persuader?

The other bit of advice for newbies, is don't believe ANYTHING you read in IM, until you've tested it fully in practice yourself. Treat methods you buy as a way to learn some useful skills, but if you believe that you will actually make a profit from a method you buy, you'll usually be disappointed (alhough there are a few good ones out there too!). But, again, this is no problem if you are realistic and understand this from the beginning, and can get on with learning bits and pieces from a bunch of methods until you know enough to put it all together and make money yourself!
