If you could go back in time, would you still be an internet marketer today?

As the thread title suggests, would you choose the same career path still or would you do something else?

I was talking to a friend of mine in IM who said he wouldn't get into internet marketing if he could go back into time (despite the fact that he is very successful). He said he is too old to change career paths now, but this lifestyle is not for him in the long run, with minimal interaction with other people on a typical work day.

I thought it would be interesting to hear from other people in this field as well.

If I have the opportunity to go back in time, I would rather still be an internet marketer. I wish I would have done this when I was a kid. I had started doing IM at the age of 21 (still young), but I wish it would have been earlier.

21 is a pretty decent age to start at, although I see what you mean in retrospect. I don't know too many young people in marketing. I think was a second option for most people in the field today

A head start would have been great! Too bad despite all the advances since I was 17, nobody has been able to construct a time machine.

I have been at this game since the mid 90's. I was not able to come up with anything to rock the world. If i went back in time it would be when ebay started. People back then would buy anything just to try buying on the internet. The good ole days eh?

I would, although in hindsight there are alot of things I would have done differently over the years.

In some ways I do miss the camaraderie of the workplace, but definitely not enough to go back! I still go out often enough to get plenty of social interaction though.

Working with clients means I get social interaction so that's not really an issue.

Being older I can remember trying many different ways of making money writing and that was not easy before the internet.

The lifestyle now is ridiculously easy and the money is great.

It's hard to imagine something too much better apart from being born fabulously rich!

Your question is a little hard for people to answer I think because generally speaking you don't regret the things you do...just the things you don't do.

If you asked is there anything you wished you'd done I imagine the answers would be a whole lot more interesting.

          Kindest regards,

if we are playing that game screw that I'd simply pick the lotto numbers when it was at over £100M! LOL

One point I would get over is.....focus on one biz that has the potential to make $1m+ profits....all this running around selling $17 ebooks for others isn't the way to build real wealth! I.M.H.O. It's easier, more scalebale and more enjoyable running one big bizz as opposed to the common theme in I.M. "run 10+" money makers at the same time.

Look at the people who made it BIG. They created one biz. Either lsited it, sold it or outsourced it. Talking millions $$'s.

The minute I decided to be an internet marketer, I made sure that it is an industry I would stick with. Been doing this for six years now and it has been a rollercoaster ride. Nonetheless, there are may things to learn and improve on every day so it is all about tenacity in network marketing. I make sure that my wordpress blogs are customized so that I get hits on my site every day. There is work to be done but I do not mind doing this because I chose this lifestyle.

I wouldn't change being an Internet marketer over the career I had. Although I would go back to change a few decisions I made for my IM career, I seem to have spent most of my time online troubleshooting! I didn't really have a plan and just jumped in blind not truly believing I could do this online thing.

Well, I'm 23 years old, and I've only been in the IM game like a year, so I can't really comment from a place of hindsight.

But I will say that my long term plan is not to be an "internet marketer," but to build a business that uses internet marketing as a tool. Personally, I have no interest in being the type of marketer who creates products in random niches just because they happen to "hot." I'm a copywriter, and every product I create will deal with the subject of copywriting directly. Going forward, I may branch out into more general marketing, or perhaps become a consultant helping people build their freelance careers in areas other than just copywriting. But even then, I will only use internet marketing as a tool, not a final goal. Personally, I would imagine that jumping from niche to niche would be an extremely thankless and unrewarding lifestyle, and ultimately, probably detrimental to your long term results. Becoming an expert is the way to go, no matter what your niche is.

    Hi Yasir,

If I may offer my opinion here too, the quick answer is yes, I'd still want to be in this market. Actually I'd also prefer (like some other posts mentioned) to go back around early 2000 and start IM from that year Huge Potential. Having said this, there is still a lot potential nowdays. It is just harder to destinguish the "good" from the "bad" and if oyu are new, Information overaload could break you

    Best,

If I could go back in time to 1995 when I first started out online, I'd gather together as much money as I could, and register all the great domain names like, business.com, google.com, amazon.com, warriorforum.com, etc, etc ...

Domains cost a small fortune to register back then, as I recall, but if I had known then what I know today, I'd have found the money and registered them all!

Im sure a lot of people have said this but I think it would be great to go back and start out around 1985... knowing what I know now of course

1985 was when the first domain name was sold (according to this article anyways, don't shoot me if this is wrong, I didn't fact check it even a little bit )

Internet's First Registered Domain Is Finally Sold, But For How Much? - HotHardware

Imagine having access to whatever domains you wanted would be worth a mint.

Plus of course the facts that the search engines would be easy to deal with compared to todays standards.

And now that I think of it, I'd probably just start Google, before Google hahah

IM is by FAR the best gig for earning a living I've ever had.

I wish I'd started sooner. I could have taken an e-commerce module during my business degree in 2000 but decided not to because the module said I'd need to learn some coding. BIG mistake and nearsighted. 8 or 9 years later I learned HTML and some CSS and never looked back.

In addition to the many reasons IM is so great set out above, I'd add I love the fact you can build on skills. You can start with an Adsense sight, ramp up to affiliate promotions and list building, then create products ... the sky is the limit and opportunities endless.

Moreover, you build on existing efforts. Sure, mistakes are made, but the successes continue building upon each other. It's the perfect business model in my view ... low overhead, no inventory (unless you go physical product e-commerce), few or no emplyment hassles, no customer service issues (if you're an affilate). You can essentially plan out what would be your ideal business and build it in IM.

The downside is there's too much hype out there about how an online business can be built in a day. Not true ... at least for me. Took some learning and more importantly doing. I don't regret a minute of what I've done in IM.

No. I guess not, being an internet marketer is something I thank God for but if I can turn back time I wouldn't choose to be one. Well I seriously became an anti-social type of person now, I rarely go out and spend time with friends. I think life will be more normal if I was not a marketer.

I think most people would be lying if they said this lifestyle was 'easy'. Just like everything in life, there's pro's and there's con's.

    Pro's

    - Less stress
    - More flexibility
    - Better pay(eventually)
    - Self empowerment(you're making money yourself and not relying on a company to pay you)

    Con's

    - Can be less social interaction(Rent a shared office space fix this)
    - A lot of ups and downs(traffic and sales mainly)

There's only a few certain lucky people who know what they want to do and they're getting paid to do it.

For the rest of us, we need to find something that takes care of us financially, then we can focus on doing the things that we love doing.
