Best FREE ScreenCapture Tool!

Hey guys,

I spent like two days testing out every Free Screen Capture tool out there. Not one caught my interest!

I tried Screen Captor, Screen Hunter, Pic Hunter, Gadwin Print, Easy Capture, Jet Screnshot (although I did like this one.) Everything just plain sucked! They didn't have arrows, annotations and stuff (Although, some of the above did, they were highly amateurish)

But, today I (fortunately) found an almost professional solution. A solution I'm gonna use, once my Snag IT Trial ends. :p

It is an old Freeware version of a now professional software. It's called HandySnap and you can download it here:

Last Freeware version: Bitmorph, Dup Detector, HandySnap, Image Brander, Image Fiddler, MediaMan

Hope this helps everyone who is looking for a good screen capture tool.

Please test it and put in your review.

Cheers,
Sumit.

Jing is very nice screen capture software. But i guess with jing software you can capture only for 5 minutes.

And since no one really wants to listen to me for more than 5 minutes in a shot anyway...

    I'm good with it

I love jing personally. I know you will not believe this but I was on the jing beta test team and when they sent out questions about improvements,.. well I sent back in the idea about the measuring of the capture area so it was a visible control.

They put the crosshairs in just cause I asked,.. how cool

If you've got a intel-based Mac, and I'm speaking to a PC world, there is a thing called iShowU from shinywhitebox that works swell and it's only $29. If you've got a newer Mac it probably came with imovieHD and you can add special effects there. I think Camtasia is working on a Mac version but I don't think it's out.

This tool is quite lightweight (Only 2.5 MB after installation.) If you want to use Jing, you need to install Microsoft .NET 3.0 too.

You can use Skitch on MAC, right? I've never used MAC. I heard they bringing a Windows version soon.

This is a Screen Capture tool. It doesn't record screen like Camtasia.

God forbid you have yourself as a customer -- you'd spin your wheels and never make a penny.

Camtasia Studio trial is good for 30 days. (Even more if you can figure out how to crash it, cause it resets the counter!) If you can't make a video and sell enough copies during that time to pay for the license, why are you bothering to make videos? Oh, to give away to people looking for FREE STUFF. Right.

Tell me, how much food does that put into your pantry?
I'm 16. I have enough time for this and don't need to worry about buying food.

          Not everyone uses Free Stuff!

If you make a thread in here saying- Which Screen Capture tool you recommend? - almost everyone would say I use and recommend Snag It.

It's just the people who are just starting out. Not everybody can afford to buy every tool. What do they do?

I mean, you are a programmer. You've got enough skills to make your own software. But, there are many guys (like me) who don't know much about coding. What will we do?

I haven't get enough pocket money to buy Snag It. I haven't got enough skills to write a program like Snag It, too. There isn't much I can do but use Free programs.

And besides, Freeware apps are there for a reason.

            Agreed.

This thread even specifically states "Best FREE screen capture toll", not "What is the best paid software for screen capturing that I can get for free?"

Nobody is looking to rip off anyone. I believe the OP is specifically looking for a free tool that is already out there for free.

On another note, are you able to save Jing videos to your desktop and use them on your own website? The only reason I ask, is that if you record a video that you want for your subscribers, you don't want that floating out in the SE's or other shared sites.

If you have Vista, the snipping tool is great. Just click the start
button and type it in the search box. I uninstalled Fireshot from
FF after I used this a couple of times. I can't quite say it is free
but after you've paid for Vista, this is included.

You can download Camtasia 3 for free. It's an older version, but still useful.

      You can download it
      'http://download.techsmith.com/camtasiastudio/enu/312/camtasiaf.exe

      and then register it
      'http://www.techsmith.com/camtasia/pcpls.asp

Then, I think you can still upgrade to the newest version for a discount.

This is not about a screen recorder! It's more of a Screen Capture utility.

Are we talking screen capture or recording here?

    Recording:
CamStudio! <-- FREE and next best to Camtasia.

    Screen capture (pic):
ScreenPrint v2.3! <-- FREE and next best to Snaggit.

And yes, the OP was asking for screen capture, not recording.

    I really like this one:

    Screenshot Captor - Mouser - Software - DonationCoder.com

    and it's free.

    For webpages I use:

    ScreenGrab
    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1146

    It's also free.

Those two programs are free and they are very valuable in my arsenal of tools. I use them almost every day for one thing or the other.
