I think the answer is yes. Google+ has an amazing advantage over facebook. They already own the search engine traffic !

So they get to control what people see when they search. This means they can promote google plus results over any other if they choose to.

In October 2011 Google+ already had 40M users, in January it was up to 90M. And growing daily.

I am banking on two things - Facebook starting to even out in terms of people using it and g+ expanding so they eventually get to both have around the same users.

If I were facebook I would be very concerned right now. Maybe they should release a search engine? lol

Having used G+ now its so much more intuitive and nicer to use, and has far more flexible ways to share content to specific segments of your contacts (just one example).

Now is the time to be using G+ folks!

I bet lots of warriors including myself would love to know how exactly we can get a tiny share of this "insane amount of money" from G+

Out of curiosity, do you have your social circle in there, I mean people you know besides your professional life? Or is it only group of warriors and other marketers?

I bet Google counted me in that 90 million as well even though I abandoned my account within a day.

I doubt it.. Seriously.. They're playing catch up.. Word is, Facebook is about to blog Google+ out of the water. They are (or have) went public which will take FB to a whole other level.

Facebook also has their own search bar and their advertising system is the most advanced on the planet; and Google knows this.

Their the #2 site in the world and people interact with their site.. I see google launching an ad program like Google Adwords soon and boy if they do, all the marketers that Google screwed over are gonna be like "See ya later"..

No doubt they are playing catchup, and facebook has a big headstart. The FB going public is not necessarily a good thing. Well good for cash reasons, but bad in the sense that they are forced to look at making a decent return for their shareholders as a first priority when Mark was never in it for the money.

      Who knows, could change everything.

Having used both products extensively Google to me is far more intuitive and easier to use but by no means is it perfect, they are releasing new stuff often.

They only just added the ability to allow you to assign someone else to manage your Google+ for business pages for example.

Not to say that facebook are going anywhere anytime soon either.

At the end of the day the competition will make it better for the users, who will be the true winners.

Right now is the time to get up to speed and learn everything you can about G+. As an IM you should make this a priority.

Let me fix this for you.

Facebook is the undisputed current champion of social networking, with more than 800 million active users.

Nothing stays the same for ever. Just ask Altavista who used to be the #1 search engine in the world.

Not say it's going to happen (frankly it's all speculation) but it's certainly possible.

I find it hard to bet against a company that has the majority share of search engine traffic on the internet.

I tried Google+ and didn't like it. I use facebook as a social site and I'm always on there talking rubbish

Only two people I personally know have tried Google+ and one gave up on it very quickly. The other is hoping to use it for business.

I doubt Google+ will last. The only people I ever hear saying good things about it, are marketers. As they are usually peddling something related or repeating what they've heard from each others sales pitches, I distrust this.

For something like Google+ to last, it would need to appeal to the average person as a social site, not just a business tool.

It's just my opinion but I highly suspect that most Google+ users are like me. People who signed up to see what it was, then couldn't be bothered looking for the button to close the account.

My take is that, at the moment, they're two very different animals.

Facebook: Link up with old friends and share the relatively mundane trivia of your daily life and yes many people DO find this very interesting.

G+ Make new friends as well as follow people who are experts or professionals in their field as well as those who you find interesting.

For instance if you're interested in photography G+ has an extremely large contingent of photographers.

G+ posts tend to be far more informative and longer than those on Facebook...At least in my experience, amongst my circles.

I think G+ will continue growing and will do so exponentially in the not too distant future.

For those who find G+ boring... Well in order to enjoy it you need to make some effort to get involved...But then again maybe you ARE just interested in the aforementioned trivialities of peoples' daily lives.

I agree the two are very different. However, if I want information I will research something properly and not just trust a social networking site. I do research on a continual basis and Google+ isn't even on my radar. Even Wikipedia I view with distrust.

Facebook is for talking to real people. Much of that involves trivialities and talking to friends and relatives about things that seem bizarre to everyone else. It's about looking at the nightclubs photo gallery to see if they caught you dancing, and mocking your friends because they were caught pulling a silly face. That isn't a bad thing, it's a large part of life - just digitized.

When I hear people (away from marketing forums) talking about the funny thing they said on Google+, then I'll start to look at its long term potential.

The main problem with google+ is its late arrival! i already have loads of people on facebook and only 5% of them know what google+ is! 1% of these is willing to consider G+!
For me, its becoming more like a fancy RSS reader as many tech websites are on it and you can get them all in one place with loads of pics, info and comments

Is this any different to the question of Coke or Pepsi?

Both facebook & google are huge, but I'd have to agree with Vipsk - facebook are ahead in the social networking side and that will play to their advantage, plus they have made clever business decisions all the way so strategically they aren't going to lose the advantage from what I can see.

It will take time, but I think it will beat Facebook and Twitter

It has been surprisingly slow in taking off, but it is only a matter of time

Google is too powerful to watch it be number 2 for too long... only a matter of time.

Having said that, FB is MUCH bigger than Google + at this point

In terms of search traffic, Google+ is going to be ahead of that because of the Search Plus Your World update. But in terms of totally beating both Facebook and Twitter? They're going to have to do a lot of work before they can actually do that. Well, either they work for it, or the people suddenly get bored of Facebook and Twitter, which I don't think will happen as of the moment.

People are sheep and need a follower...

Going to be hard for Google to go after a established userbase. It worked with Android and they took over iphone/blackberry with a superior product but this is different.

People are not going to change when all their friends are on it. Someone would have to start a big trend and everyone follow for mass exodus to happen. No one likes "moving" but if the new home is that much better eventually they might.

Most of the traffic on facebook is games/apps, to me everything looks outdated like it's 2007. I don't see G+ catching up anytime soon, it's not the "it" product. They need to have some kind of a promo/incentive to switch.

With all the power/options Google has they are probably the only one that would have chance. Can't they just disallow "youtube" to be used/embedded on facebook just for spite?

Not in this lifetime. The only way that Google Plus can get people to sign up, is to brute force them to if they sign up for ANY other Google product.

That increases their numbers, but is meaningless. Those people don't use Google Plus. They were tricked into creating a profile.

Google doubles Plus membership with brute-force signup process

I don't think you can really consider G+ as a rival to facebook. Sure, they are both social networking sites, but in such a field, the first mover advantage is a truly formidable barrier, which I don't see G+ surmounting any time in the near future.

For example, when G+ was released, just about everyone interested in using a social networking site was already signed up with Facebook. People were already in the habit of using FB to organise events, share info and keep track of birthdays (yes, I'm sure we're all guilty of this ), and unless everyone suddenly migrated to G+, people would still use facebook to organise everything, because they know everyone is still a member of the site, whereas using G+ would only notify the few people that had migrated to it (many of whom still used facebook anyway).

Ultimately, it is just inconvenient to juggle two social networking accounts for most people, and then the tendency would be to just use the one that most people were using - facebook.

So unless facebook undergoes a change that immensely pisses off its entire user base, I don't see G+ gaining any major headway over facebook in the near or distant future.

Google + - Too Little Too Late

Nearly everyone I know doesn't care less or don't even know about Google plus, most people are far too busy to be joining yet another website. The response when you talk about doing something is "yeah post it on facebook".

I just can't ever see it having anything like the same success as FB. It's too late for Google, they took far too long joining the social scene.

I have heard a lot of hype about Google Plus from some top online gurus but in my personal opinion, I don't believe it has what it takes to beat Facebook. I do believe that Google Plus could beat Twitter farely quickly.

    From Google site:

"If you’re signed into Google, we can do things like suggest search queries – or tailor your search results – based on the interests you’ve expressed in Google+, Gmail, and YouTube. We’ll better understand which version of Pink or Jaguar you’re searching for and get you those results faster."
    __________________________________________________ ________________________

I personally think that Google+ is going to surpass Facebook as far as Business Pages are concerned.

With 84% of search being done using Google, the skys the limit, and especially now that Google is making search results geared more towards its users. SEO will be greatly affected. Not in a bad way, but backlinks, keywords, and meta data will play a different roll.

Simplistic? sounds like you have not used it much, there is a lot of functionality in there.

100M users and growing (rapidly) and owned by Google is a force to be reckoned with I think.

As to whether it will beat facebook and twitter, I guess it depends on the definition of the question.

Will it "beat them" in pure numbers? Maybe, Maybe not.

Will it "beat them" by having more results showing up in the SERPs? I distinct possibility given Google also own the SERP's. I mean you only need to look at youtube video results in the search engines. Now showing up in the majority of searches and only a few years back that was not the case.

I think we'll see the same thing with G+. In fact this is happening now more and more as it's rolled out.

      Time will tell.
