If you could change one thing about IM, what would it be?

I've only been doing IM for a little while, but I've been thinking about this for a minute. I believe that sometimes the best results occur when people change or bend the rules.

For example, Tim Ferriss and his kickboxing championship for anyone whose read the four hour work week (even though he exploited the rules more than changed them, but that's besides the point ).

So if you guys could change anything about IM itself, what would it be?

As for me, I would make it so that if someone created a great information product it would be like having the best lap time at a track. Your Lap-time (product) remains at the top of the rankings (Sear engines) until someone comes along and has a better lap-time (product). So in other words, your success and sales is determined solely on how good your product is. Which is determined by the people who use it.

Sure this would cut the fun out of IM for people that enjoy SEO and keyword research. But I think it would make IM a lot less congested.

Okay, so what would you guys change?

Yeah that's what I was thinking. You have to weed through so much junk just to find the good stuff, and it can be overwhelming especially when you first start out.

The problem is, what you might think is junk, because you have a certain experience level already, might be eye opening new stuff to me(even if it is rehashed PLR). So that would be hard to do, in my opinion.

How much competition would there be if everyone was doing the same thing? If the "Guru's" were only allowed to put out "approved" information?
Many of us don't think of this as a business, it's more of a hobby that makes us money.
Look at the things the Guru's are doing, it basic marketing and selling tactics that hasn't changed in 100 years. Yes, the way it is delivered has changed but the same underlying tactics of how we respond and interact from marketing messages has changed.
I think the bad products serve their role in the IM world, if you never have bought a bad product, how would you know what a good product is?
I know it sounds like I'm defending the Guru's, I'm really not trying too, because I too get tired of all the false promises they make too. But if you're anything like me, you learn from your mistakes and it's your own fault if you keep making the same mistakes over and over again.

I'd like to see a program similar to the Better Business Bureau, or the FDA (but not government regulated) implemented where every new product, service, etc. was rated and needed to pass certain quality standards before it could be put on the market.

I know that could open a can of worms or even worse, Pandora's Box, but I'm talking about in a perfect world.

Anyway, if it were possible, I believe it would not only eliminate upright internet marketers operating in truth, honesty and integrity from being thrown into the internet marketers are scammers pile, but spare new entrepreneurs the unfortunate situation of being ripped off, led astray, discouraged and eventually quitting with a bad taste in their mouths.

        <sigh>

Oh, haha, It's Okay if you call me a dreamer.

I know this is pie in the sky stuff but If I could change anything about IM I would eliminate all the IM products that are misleading and promise you thousands of dollars almost overnight with little or no work on your part. This would make it a lot easier to find decent products to help you build your business without being skeptical about every offer you come across.

Same thing here. If I had the opportunity to change one thing in the world of internet marketing, I should eliminate all products and services that are giving me crap results or even misleads me. We should always focus on products and services that are in good quality.

Interesting question, I guess I would change the way content that generates results (sales) is organized and get rid of all the fakes through a different method of validation for IMs.

Sal, you're ahead of me. I also thought this, so I support your proposal.

      Why?

#1. Whining has not solved any problem in business, as I experienced.

#2. History shows, they have achieved results, who started and completed something.

#3. Whingers are wasting your time and energy and destroy your effectiveness.

      All the best,

I'm new to IM, but it frustrates me to see people searching for a niche just for their financial gain. They plan on passing themselves off as an expert in a subject they know nothing about, and have no passion about, and really don't even have any interest in just to make a buck.

I have 3 or 4 niches that I love and am passionate about and know alot about, so that is what I am going to focus my efforts on. Fortunately they are areas that don't seem to have a huge amount of competition in the IM world.

Randy, I understand what you say.

Those are the people (respect for exceptions!) who can not get further than those several dollars.

If someone don't has interest, knowledge, passion (and above all strong commitment) on what s/he is doing -- that people doesn't take seriously what s/he does. Their activity doesn't result a long-term, well-run and fruitful business.

I met many of the like. If luck isn't joined itself beside them, they give up. But it doesn't matter. Thus will be more opportunities to anyone who is serious about her/his business.

          Many successes,

          Sandor

Good question Ttrain... It would probably have to be to eliminate people who have never actually made money online from selling/teaching others how to 'make money online'. In any other field it would be an insane notion and it's diluting the field for those of us who are trying to really put out top notch stuff for others to truly benefit from.

I agree with what you are saying, but hear me out. Here's the problem. Say you've never made money and sell an eBook on making money and you actually make thousands of dollars. Now you have authority. Your next eBook on making money comes out and you can actually teach people how to make money. Does that fact that you've made money by pushing a crappy eBook make it alright to market your next eBook?

      i like that one.

that, and eliminating the idea of a magic bullet. it is counterproductive and keeps people from working the strategies they already know because they think that theres some secret new tactic to make thousands of dollars overnight out there that people are hiding from you or that you dont yet know. making money isnt sexy. its hard work.

I agree with this right here. I think once people learn the truth they either stick with it or leave for good. I was introduced to IM through ads telling me I could make $3000 a month and do nothing. They don't tell you that it might take a long time to get to that $3000 a month (if ever) and much longer to get to that "do nothing" point. I never bought what they where selling, but I bet a lot of people got scammed like that.

I would ban the way things get repeated time after time. Especially on forums, if I need something, I'll search the forum for it, there's usually another thread related to what I need to know with the answers. I see many of the same questions being made in threads when the answers are all over the forum.

I know this is kind of unrelated, but I'm talking about people repeating questions in the IM niche so I suppose it's related on some level..

I would also make it compulsory that every product offers quality, truth and legitimacy. Too many phony products out there.

That's a dangerous idea. The sheer amount of content is what keeps this forum profitable. I understand what you mean, but often the same threads will have info that's different and valuable.

Ban OTO it's straight up foolishness! It's pointless, valueless, and it's all about that marketer's greed that they cleverly try to disguise and justify for not leaving money on the table. A marketer can be just as successful providing upfront options like what many membership sites offer like basic, silver, gold membership for example with a description of what each service level can obtain. The whole secret special one time offer 99.9% of the time is a boldface lie because you can grab or access that offer repeatedly, so you start off the bat by insulting the consumers intelligence. You then shame the consumer into being a loser with the "No Thanks...I'll struggle trying to make this product work...take me to the base product" nonsense. And finally, surprise, surprise the OTO is now magically and upgrade on the membership site. Really!!? I say get rid of this ridiculous sales tactic that is clearly designed to bleed more money out of the consumer rather than provide detailed options upfront or price appropriately for a comprehensive single sale. It's no wonder why the FTC and other government entities try to intervene and interject policy where they really have no business...because of insipid sales tactics that the IM industry seemingly loves to support.

To me, giving quality that's actually helpful and worthwhile is everything, especially when it comes to teaching people the ropes. I want to touch millions and help them, not exploit them.

What I'd like to see is for greedy people, who are lazy about product creation, to put in some effort. And I want these same people to stop stealing content and at least rewrite and recombine it in their own way, with their own spice. I'd say that's a reasonable request.

  • Please define exactly what is "Internet Marketing". I mean I know what the "Internet" is. And I know what "Marketing" is. But the definition of "Internet Marketing" is so skewed by todays culture, I don't think anyone knows what it is.

And because of that "Internet Marketing" has become the new buzz word for MLMing, affiliate promotions, make money online, home based business, SEO, promoting and selling. But is that really what it has become?

Because if so, then "Internet Marketing" has settled to be nothing more than a virtual stroll down a carnivals midway.

Which is why so many of you have this feeling that all's not right in IM land.

Oh... Wait... I would make Aweber allow me to combine lists.. I have 2 lists that I send the same thing to.. I know they can press a button and combine my list but if you know aweber, then you know how they are.. SHEESH..

Tim Ferris was genius for that move though.. Most people would have been worried about being called a cheater; but how are you cheating if you played by the rules... Genius..

Who would decide? And there would always be exceptions. So, I would just say if I could change anything right now, it would just be me that I could do a better job at providing quality and service so that people appreciate and use what I'm providing and spread the word.

Word of mouth is probably still the best promotion for any business--online or offline.
