If you are building a blog from scratch...you have some money to spend[except on ppc]how would you grow a blog from zero to 1 million unique visitors in 12 months?

    Depends on your niche.
    If there are not so many searches, you will never have enough visitors in the first place coz people are not interested in what you are offering!!

    Go to Google trends, search for a hot trend. Build your content around it..
    then You can use stubmleupon,Digg, facebook as a means of promotion.

    use document sharing sites like docstoc, use hubpages, blogger, squidoo.
    Use articles, press releases.
    You can take an ad on adf.ly which willgive you 10000 visitors for $5.

      adf.ly does not work, its a complete waste of money. The p orn guy was right though. you could sell se x toys, there is plenty of affiliate programs for that.
      you could also do massive banner advertising. Facebook script is also not such a bad idea.

      Inadvertantly the concept of hitting on porn is illustrative of the primary characteristics of the best niches. Competition. The quickest way I know to get massive visitors is siphoning traffic from the competition itself. A proven marketing method used by many of the most successful marketers is through article syndication on top relevant websites/blogs, and targeted niche ezines. If you do have money to invest, consider also banner ads, solo ads, and offline promotions such as niche magazines, newspaper classifieds, press releases, etc. Note that this method completely bypasses the time lag of SEO.

    Before you get excited about porn, visit some of your favorite porn sites with SEOquake running, and see what the bar tells you. The days when porn automatically got lots of traffic are long gone.

    Choose a niche that you are interested in and will stay interested in. Build an authority site. Keep adding to it. Build lots of quality backlinks. Here is some math: A million hits a year is about 2700 hits per day. If you can get on Page 1 for about 40 longtail keywords with about 5k searches per day, this should be enough to get you this kind of traffic.

    As far as how to spend the money, if you can create your own content, spend it on quality backlinks. If you cannot create your own content, then spend the money on content and backlinks.
