i am interested in creating an eBook to sell online. I know this is kinda a vague question but: what is the average length of a successful eBook in your opinion?

A big part of this depends on your niche and price. Check for free products in your niche that have already been published and use that as a starting point.

Much of your success will be linked to content and copy however. Worry more about what you are going to write, not how long it is going to be. You can always expand on it after you have your core in place.

Impossible to say, the best product I ever bought was 2 pages,

It really depends on what you wan tto get across, I never put any fluff of filler in mine and they vary from 5000 words to about 20,000 words

THIS is why I love Aussie folks.

I've seen WSOs sell as a 4 page document all the way up to a 100-page ebook with video.

It totally depends on your concept, positioning, and niche. If you have a killer little idea to make some money and it only takes you 4 pages to divulge it, you could have a hit on your hands. Then again a 4-page document about what backlinks are isn't going to be very popular.

Be as complete and thorough as possible in order to get your point across in the best way to help your potential customers.

And as Tad said above, you really have to make sure your copy and content is worthy of selling, don't try to hit a certain word/page count and focus on just producing good, valuable content and you'll do just fine!

Has nothing to do with length and everything to do with how useful the content is. eBooks alone aren't making money these days, you have to package them as multi-media products: ebook + workbook + audios + video tutorials (I use debut screen capture for this which is free).

I've got ebooks that I've turned into packages like this that are selling for $99 a pop. It's all about content and packaging, not length.

great advise guys, i really liked what you have to say about making a "package deal" my expertise is in selling things on eBay and online in general (that is what i want to make my ebook about)... i know that there are a TON of info about it but i think that my info is for the "average" person and really is a true success story and guideline

what vehicles do you seem to work the best for you selling your ebooks? eBay? Amazon? personal website?

As many pages as it takes to cover your points without waffling or repeating yourself.

One thing to keep in mind is what are the expectations of the people who you are addressing. In some niche's the people will expect to see a longer book than in other ones. But also remember that a lot of books have a little bit of concept or theory and a lot of stories and application....

But no one can answer this question as asked....it is very dependent on niche and what your ebook is about...

Ufff... no way to really judge by the no of pages - the quality of content is what matters.
And even more it depends on your niche.

Yesterday I had the same idea. I'm still waiting for some things in the mail so I didn't really have anything to do. In about 5 hours I cranked out a 10 page e-book (in my signature.) It got great reviews, but still hasn't sold a single copy. 5 or so affiliates picked it up from War+ but I'm yet to see sales. I spent $60 to advertise it, and I'm not sure if or when I'll recoup the costs.

The lesson I learned was not to reinvent the wheel. If I decide to write another e-book the title will be something like "how to make 512,108 a year." Hope you know what I mean.

I think this depends on if you are selling the ebook to. Is it your list who you know pretty well and you know the subject matter pretty well? Then it certainly is all about content and no worries about length.

If you are just writing the ebook to sell to an audience you don't really know there could be more of an expectation for length (sad but true). I write PLR ebooks and they tend to run around 5,000 words. That works out to be about 25-30 pages when you space them 1.5 lines (versus double space). If I were to write an ebook on widget x and only make it 5 pages long I don't think it would sell too well because there would be a perception it wasn't thorough enough. I could be wrong but that's just my opinion.

But, like I said, if this is for your list, just write from the heart (with research of course!) and you should be fine.

    Good luck!

As long as you get your point across, and dont waffle on or duplicate what you're saying,it can be any length.

I think it depends on what the topic is and how impactful it is. I HATE books that are filled with fluff just because it adds to the page count. I'd rather pay for a 10 page eBook that is soaked with great content and actionable than one that is 200 pages but all fluff.

I'd focus on the quality not the length. Let it be as long as it needs to be.

I'm no expert, but I'd say the main thing to be concerned about before writing an ebook is whether there is a market for it. If there is and your ebook is the dog's, then with the right marketing it should sell... in theory.

The answer is it depends There is no right or wrong answer.

The more important point is that making an Ebook is the easy part of the process. Actually SELLING it is vastly more difficult. So, you need to START by learning what will SELL an Ebook, and the criteria that determine what will SELL, will tell you the answer to how long the Ebook should be.

Thinking you can write an Ebook, and that people will just buy it, will lead to big disappointment in my opinion, so first find a method which tells you exactly how to SELL it, and start from there.

You might be better off going to the copywriting forum for this question.

Again, I'm no expert, but my tip would be to create relationships with your prospects. Build a list.

There is a big difference between a stranger selling something to you and a trusted friend. Selling becomes much easier if your prospects are somewhat familiar with you.

  • This is a mixed point of view. You get guys who produce a 70 page e-book but it's filled with fluff, and then you get others who cut right to the point but it's only 30 pages.

I'd say that you should focus on killer content. If you do this, no one will care how long it is. If it gives them what they need and helps them, it could be 10 pages and they won't care.

It all depends on what exactly your eBooks about...

I've seen some eBooks that have been very successful, 1000+ downloads in a matter of days, only 5-10 pages long. But you need to make sure you have the content/info. People will buy it if they know they are going to find what they are looking for.

Personally, I usually try and buy eBooks that have at least 20+ pages, because I like having lot's of info and examples. But it varies depending on the person.

Instead of the length, if you focus on the content and the quality of material presented in the ebook, that should probably be much better, because if the ebook has 100 pages, but the quality is not good, people wont like to share it.

But, if the ebook has only 30 pages, but the quality of material presented is good enough, and if the material in the ebook is useful to your readers, they would definitely wanna share it for you and might even promote your ebook!

    Hi Black,

I've seen ebooks between 40 and 200 pages work. I'd err on the short side (60 pages or so).

    Here's another tip though:

Why not video? They have a higher perceived value, and they take less time to create.

    Just my two cents.

Length is not important as long as the content answers the readers questions then many will buy it and remember exposure is the most important thing when it comes to selling, so you need to promote yourself and the publication.

Length of the ebook is the LAST factor that determines its overall success.

I've waded through 140 page WSOs, and I've read 5 page WSOs. The best WSO I ever purchased wasn't much longer than 8 pages.

Worry about your content, not your length.

100+ words. Although (admittedly)... some ebooks that are aroundd 30 pages are better than ebooks that are 300+ pages long. But 100+ words if you're just starting off.
