I'm going the other way and adding more caffeine with these late nights creating backs, articles, spinning, unspinning, and pinging. Trying to get through all the hype and clutter and find out what actually works.

I can tell you what has worked for me, but it might not be what you think of as 'working'.

I started with very little knowledge of internet marketing, but decided I wanted to give it a shot. I was familiar with web design and SEO, to a small extent, because I ran a retail eCommerce site about 10 years ago.

I started my journey at www.smartpassiveincome.com. It was here that learned about niche research and the different marketing methods. Most of the quality information I found was free.

After learning the basics of niche research I began to implement what I had learned. I landed on 5 potential projects based on the information I had gathered. I built websites for these keywords and worked hard to provide some really good quality. One of my websites was related to my favorite hobby.

As I was building these website I continued to do research and spent a lot of time reading Warrior Forum (I still do)

As I built out my website and continued learning, I found there were some major fatal flaws in my original plans. My first 5 websites were scrapped (or at least placed on the back burner). I took what I learned form about 100 hours of labor, countless hours of research and my own failure and began a new project in a new niche.

I am not really in a place where I can afford to spend a ton of money, but I decided I needed to make some investments in my business. I found the service "build my rank" and used their free trial with 10 back links. Those 10 backlinks put me in the top 25 for Google's search engine. I decided to pay $60 a month to keep the service going.

As I build my website content up I also continued my research and consistently posted backlinks to targeted keywords on Build My Rank. After about 2 months my website was ranking in the top 10 for most of my targeted keywords. It was also ranking very high for a keyword I thought would be too tough to go after.

At this time my website was getting 100 visitors a day and making about 1 sale per week. I continued to work on, improve and grow my website. I added an opt in form and gave away a free gift for subscribers.

Now my website, the first in my internet marketing portfolio, is getting about 600 visitors a day, 10-15 opt ins a day and averaging about $550 in profit. I am now using what I have learned to 'rinse and repeat' and diversify my income source. I am looking back at some of my old projects and making plans to improve my current project.

All in all I have spent hundreds of hours writing content, building backlinks and tweaking my website and offers. I have failed on more of my projects than I have succeeded on, but I learn from my failure and continue marching forward.

Hopefully in another few months I will be making 1000+ per month. Eventually I would like to make IM a full time gig.

Get yourself ranked for targeted keywords and you will start getting traffic. Some of this traffic will convert and some will not.
I use Angela's and Paul's monthly reports where they give you websites to place your backlinks with thorough instructions. Or try Profile Link Services (I'm not an affiliate) - profile linkwheel packages - these are pretty much Angela's and Paul's backlinks done for you but also get pinged, bookmarked and put into an RSS feed.
To get more traffic you can also dip in social media.
Make a YouTube channel for your site and promote it to your niche by sending messages to members, but make sure it's high quality content
Create a Facebook fan page and ask your friends to join.
Create a Twitter account and connect to people that might be interested in your niche.
Post articles on Hubpages and Squidoo, if you have a good content you won't even need any promotion of your content.
