Opinions, Opinions, Everywhere... Be VERY Aware

Reading the forum this afternoon, I saw a whole plethora of opinions, that are stated as fact..

This is fine(well, not really), until somebody who doesn't know any better, takes the opinion of someone else as fact when it can be harmful to their business..

Warriors... some of you don't need to be told this, BUT!..

Be aware, very aware.. that most of the content you find on this forum and many other forums, blogs, etc are only the opinions of the person writing them, nothing more and nothing less..

These opinions are often created by person writing them as a result of many different things, and sometimes this leaves a topic wide-open for mis-interpretation and mis-understanding.

Don't take my word as true, don't take anything you read as 100% true.

Sure, the majority of the advice you find here is sound business practice, but always be aware that it might not be and you should gather various opinions, facts and do more research in order to find your version of the truth and what will be a good fit for you.

Don't be afraid to question, second guess and oppose an opinion in a mature and responsible way. If you think something isn't right, then there are probably ten other warriors who have the same thought and without some input, may find that they follow bad advice from others...

It doesn't have to be this way.

Debate and discussion occur on this very board in the most delightful ways as a result of questions and opinions being opposed, so it's all good if you think differently.. let it free...

Peace

Jay

wow.. where did this post come from?...

You're guilty of that as well JayXTreme. Not because you're malicious but because you're ignorant about many things. As well all are. Nothing wrong with having a good opinion about something.

      Yup!!.. 100%...

      Hence the reason I included:

Don't take my word as true
[edit] I make it my aim to only comment on things that I have an interest in or have knowledge of, but even then I am open to being wrong...

Jay, you make an excellent point.

Unfortunately, even opinions can be dangerous, even if you preface your post
beforehand by saying this is just my opinion and putting it in big bold red
      letters.

      The reason is human nature.

When somebody sees or hears something...anything...curiosity is going to
almost compel them to try it out.

One of the worst lawyers tricks is to bring up something in a line of
questioning that they know is going to be objected to and sustained but
because the thought was already put in the jury's mind, even though they
were instructed to disregard it, human nature won't allow them to.

In some cases, these comments can actually lead to mistrials and worse,
      prosecutor misconduct.

For these reasons, and so many more, you need to be so careful about
      everything you say.

Sure, there will be those who will argue that it's up to the person hearing
or reading the info to be smart enough to know what to ignore and what
to possibly put to use. Sadly, this isn't the case as some people just
don't have the sense to know the difference.

And of course as this in itself is my opinion, it needs to also be taken with
a grain of salt...which is why these days I try to voice my opinion as little
      as possible.

I find it a lot safer that way.

Anyway, Jay, I think this was an excellent post and I hope people on both
ends of the spectrum take it to heart,

We're not talking about giving people medical advice here. I think you're making this more dramatic than it really is Steven. And yes that's my opinion. Forum dramatics annoy me. Most people can use their common sense and their moral compass to decide whether something's worth listening to or not.

Yup, very true.. I think Waggerz did get a little to excited about it. Again, that's just my opinion

I have noted a few that have raised high alarms on my BS meter lately that I personally think are talking out their bums. Yet, there are always a bunch of newer members chiming in with their thanks and saying how they are going to do the same thing. It sounds like Jay may be noticing the same thing.

My excitement comes from personal experience and nothing else.

Still, I agree with what you're saying in your OP.

            Well I suppose that's a good point.

There are people new to Internet Marketing however it should be our responsibility to steer them individually when bad advice is being recommended. And for the most part I think we do that. I've been corrected before by someone.

Personally I can't remember reading anything that would be harmful to people new to Internet Marketing--to the point of being dramatic--and I've been doing this for half a decade. Then again maybe I tune out of that stuff and you've noticed something I haven't.

    I'm glad you said this.

Like you and Steven point out...Not only should people be on the lookout for taking inaccurate advice, those who are giving that advice need to realize that they could be seriously damaging others.

I recently made this blog post...

I bought "There's more than one way to skin a Hamster" WSO and I have to tell you that I favour one method over all of the others because it works best for me.

If by chance you do receive "poor" advice about Hamster skinning well... just know that those suckers bite really, really hard.

I agree with the points mentioned but there are simple ways to state your idea without trying to present it as "the final word"...start your post with

      In my opinion......
      I think.....
      In my experience.....
      I have found.....

and one which seems to apply to some of the things I've seen recently....

I just read in another forum that.....

Some don't "qualify" their answers because the goal for them is to be perceived as an expert - and some don't because they ARE experts on the subject. For most IM subjects, there is no ONE right answer for everyone.

The other thing at play is that you shouldn't believe everything you hear or read and should test for yourself to see if a technique works for you. Some are willing to believe anyone who tells them what they want to hear - even if there is no connection to fact.

"In my opinion" the worst threads are where people argue and insult trying to be right rather than admit their advice may not be the only viable answer. My way or the highway just doesn't work well in a discussion forum.

When I post, I never post an opinion. Once I see it written down I know it isn't an opinion anymore, it's fact. It has to be true, it's right there in black and white and I can read it.
