Question on BUYING a website from Flippa

There is a website for sale on flippa that I am interested, it sells a physical product through dropshipping. I am already pretty established in this niche, so that is the allure to me. Essentially, it is one of my competitors up for sale. They are, however, a smaller competitor.

I was wondering if anyone has any tips on how I should go about this? Here are some of my questions:

Would it behoove me to not mention anything about who I am? He would definitely recognize my website as a competitor.

His site seems to bring him in about $500 in profit per month. He is starting the bidding around 8 times that (around $4k), and has a buy it now at 20 times that (around $10,000).

Any other thoughts/tips/tricks from anyone who is a pro at this, or at least has some experience?

*I should also mention one plus is that his site is full of products that I don't have, so he must have a supplier(s) that I haven't come across as of yet... if that matters at all. The website is not quite a year old, so he definitely does NOT have some large customer list or list of subscribers that come with it. Those $500 in profits each month are probably made up of roughly on 2-3 sales each month. Bigger products.

    Hey,

If this were me I would make an evaluation on the top amount I would be willing to spend on the site based on:

    1) Current profit
    2) Current traffic

Since you are in the niche already this might be a good long term investment, plus give you access to suppliers that you do not already have.

Have you checked out their traffic stats to make sure they all add up?
Have you checked out his revenue claim?

I would do both of these things before moving forward in any way...

In terms of him knowing who you are.....I don't think that matters. He wants to sell so therefore it won't bother him selling to someone already in the market....it might actually benefit him to do so since he will have to do less of a handover process (Because you already know what you are doing...)

    Hope this helps

    Chris

Great points guys, thanks. I do have an idea on his traffic and sales. I mentioned the income level, and I think that is from about 100 search engine visitors per day.

With the volume of his sales compared to his traffic, he could be worse off.

Don't worry about hiding, worry about verifying data.

Since you know the biz, try and negotiate a good deal!

Interested to see how this works out for you. Best wishes.

Could you buy a competing url that is the same, clone the site and just "out-seo" him?

Thanks guys, great ideas. Scott - I had thought about that actually. The more I think about it, he doesn't seem to have some great customer list or anything of huge worth... I'm wondering if I might be better off just out working him, while starting from scratch.

That is very possible Nate. Most marketers are easy to out work and out smart. Just develop a sound plan and implement every day. Good Luck....

I presume he doesn't supply you with his list op suppliers? Some webshops that are for sale do that.

Do you have verification of income?
If you have verified income, what method did you use?

It's not worth it if his SEO isn't very good, If i were you I would first find the keywords that are brining him in the traffic (use semrush) next use a programme like market samurai to find out where his quality backlinks are coming from.

Make a list of the ones that you can also obtain, use a free service like expireddomains.net to see if there are any domains in the niche with backlinks. To give you a head start. If not don' worry!

Find out what pages are bringing in the most traffic, take notes of the keywords that those articles are targetting. Outsource those articles to a quality company (usually $10 each).

Total cost in all this is like $70-$80,

Now even if you spend $300 or so on quality seo your still be better off and all this can be done within 72 hours.

With the money saved you could then make another 9 of these sites and kill the niche.
