Denny's Home Run Super Bowl Ad.

When I watched the super bowl and saw denny's ad about giving every person in the US a free Grand Slam breakfast on Tuesday I couldn't help but think "wow" that will be a home run for them.

Sure enough when Tuesday came, people were lining up to get their free Grand Slam breakfast. At some stores people were lining up around the block while other stores was so busy that they had to give people a coupon to come in on a different day.

Sure it cost Denny's quite a bit to give away a free Grand Slam but not everybody that went had a Grand Slam, also most people had a coffee or soft drinks with their meal. Denny's will also benefit in the long run by bringing in customers that hasn't been in, in a long time.

While all the other businesses spent their 1.2 million dolar ad trying to sell us something, Denny's used that money to give us something for free and guess who's ad was the most effective?

Just thought I'd share a good marketing lesson about the importance to provide value first then take the profits.

Cheers

Denny's is an innovation marketer for many years, much of the time only in regional markets. To my memory this is the first doing so in a national campaign.

With Hurricane Katrina Denny sent hundreds of cooks and supplies to the area to make warm meals for the folks affected.

I didn't see one mention of it in any ad campaign.

Also, previously Denny's was thought of as a place that you only went to after a night of party's and concerts (a negative spin mostly)

They have embraced this concept and created a whole niche based on Denny's being the after party place with "Denny's All Nighter" concerts and promotions all tied to the after closing crowd.

Making fun of kiddie breakfasts has also turn into a wining idea for them.

Denny's has focused on their core profit business, breakfast.

Reminding America that breakfast isn't just for mornings anymore.

Dan Kennedy would've been proud. This is one of his strategies he shares with people in the restaurant business.

I agree with it being brilliant and thinking big.

Feeding Americans across the ENTIRE U.S. at Denny's..LOL. Not to mention they have WAY better menu selections than so many mainstream restaurants and the booth atmosphere is what so many people want when they go out.

Anyways...kudos to them, great idea IMO
