Getting traffic is all about creativity

If you are in a more abstract niche in comparison to IM or Make Money Online you really have to get creative.

I am working in a sports related niche and it is much harder to get traffic than in other niches. I have read an endless amount of books on how to get traffic (besides PPC or other paid methods) and most all of the methods wont apply in my niche...

No one is looking on PPT sharing sites for how to make a perfect spiral pass in football, no one is searching PDF files for how to get a quick first step, no one is spending time listening to podcasts to find out the most innovative basketball drills.

So that has been my biggest obstacle in this niche, TRAFFIC. I have found a few things that can bring me in about 30 uniques a day, but still thats pretty bad.

Does anyone have any creative methods they use in their niches that you don't find in the average get traffic ebooks?

Augie

    What's your site?

I would think some sports sites get a lot of traffic.
    All depends on your content.

I agree with what you say about easy traffic to IM sites. Around 10 months ago, I set up a 'personal blog'. I write for it, plus there are also a few contributions published from top-notch guest posters.

I've never done anything to promote it. Zilch, zero, nothing. Yet it's now recording an average of 9,000+ unique monthly visitors.

You could always try direct marketing to universities, high schools and community leagues. If you have methods that people find useful, they are sure to share it with others, their teams and collegues. All it takes is one well-known person to say "I'm using the Augie Johnston Method."

While traffic is always important, I would think this is a case where who your traffic is specifically could be vastly more important than numbers.

I suggest going here: The Art of Non-Conformity » 3×5 and downloading the 279 days to an overnight success. If you are committed and passionate about a niche you can really make it work for you (expectations aside) -- it takes time but it's more organic and might be more suited. You could also prepare a package of content and offer it as private label - that could get you a bump in exposure but make sure you've got stuff to support it (ie content)

You should piggyback other sites who have huge rank and traffic. Contact the owner and send your offer.

Say your sports related niche was Soccer, I would do the following to learn where your target market are hanging out and how to gain them:

    - Check out some of the most visited soccer sites/forums going. (Where your audience is hanging out!!!)
    - Take down a couple of those site's URL. i.e. Sky Sports.com, Manutd.com etc..
    - Head over to Google Ad Planner
    - Input the URL of the site addresses you have gathered and visited.
    - Check out the statistics of your audience there
    - The Google Ad Planner should provide additional websites where your target market hang around.
    - Visit those sites, take notes, make comments, mingle in, purchase some banner ads, etc.
    - Do this with the remainder of your gathered site URL's and compare their similarities in terms of the most visited OTHER SITES.

Facebook Pages are also a good place to gain exposure for your website.

There are so many ways of finding traffic, some easier than others, but this is what makes IM fun!

    Hope it helps,

    - Dan
