My Skype Was Hijacked!

Yup it happened yesterday. My Skype account was hijacked.
I watched it happen.

I happened to be on Skype taking to my tech when I noticed a new fund balance showing. I don't call outside the USA/Canada so I don't keep funds in my skype account. It started at $25 and quickly dropped.
Then my emails popped up showing I had made purchases to skype via my paypal.

I got off the call real quick and logged into my skype account and disconnected the financial links/information and changed my password.
I logged back into skype under my new password and felt I was ok.

I then created 2 chargebacks in Paypal for the 2 skype payments, changed my paypal password and canceled the authorization for skype to charge my account.

I looked all over the skype info pages and couldn't find any contact numbers - go figure.

Since Skype is owned by Ebay and eBay owns Paypal, I figured they might have contact info. I called Paypal and talked to a nice fellow there about all that had been going on. While he was looking to see if they had a contact number for Skype, my skype system auto logged out.

I tried to log in and my password / username wasn't working. I tried the "lost password" feature and sure enough - the A&^$holes had already broken in again and changed the email address.

The scary part about this whole thing - other than the possiblitiy of draining my paypal account and then my bank account - is the speed at which all this happened.

I was on top of it - so I thought

Anyone else have this same situation?

I went to the skype forum and the moderators there told me what information I needed and then gave me a "special" email address to send it all to. The second person helping me says he escalated my claim with the fraud department but I haven't heard from Skype at all.

Is this another sample of poor management? Its an ebay company...

Any thoughts as too how they were able to hijack my account and then still access it after I changed the password?

Paypal, go to my account, profile, paylist -

Debbie, thanks so much - I didn't even realize what I had there. I did buy some skype at one point but have no need now to even have that active as I just use the freebies.

I discovered quite a few things linked that need not be.

wish you the best on figuring this out -

        get yourself a magic jack.

Depends on what AV program you're using - no AV program find's all key logger. Did you installed a plugin for Skype or clicked on a link in Skype sent from someone you don't know?

I'm careful not to click unknown links and I haven't installed any plugins for skype so maybe it was a fluke.

I will check my system again with a different program and see what I get.
          Thanks for the advice

If it wasn't a phishing email, definitely sounds like a keylogger trojan.

If its any of the advanced rootkit type of loggers, your AV won't detect it.

You need to get an AV program that lets you boot and scan from a CD in order to detect most of these.

If I were you, I'd immediately back up your files to a dvd or another hdd, restore your pc's factory image, then reinstall your AV, and then scan your backup source before you put the files/settings back.

I'm thinking they changed the email the first time they got in, then after you changed your password they just got the new one, went in, and changed the password too.

    Hi Jill
I've heard a few people talk about magic jack
I guess I'll have to go read about it.

Yeah a person has to watch that linking stuff - Its easy to compromise accounts that way.

If it's a keylogger I'd think they'd go after something bigger than a skype account. Check your other accounts with money in them (NOT FROM THAT COMPUTER!!!! Do it at a friend's place or something) to make sure they didn't clean you out.

I've checked all my other accounts and nothing seems off. I even changed passwords on the email account I use with my skype.
I use RoboForm for all my passwords - so can a keylogger work with that even though I'm not actually typing the password in?

One thing that left me vulnerable was the password itself. It was pretty basic. I use more complex passwords for any of my really important accounts.
Since yesterday I've been changing all my passwords to ones that are complex and generated by RoboForm. So once again I'm not actually keying in anything.

Can you recommend a suitable program to check with?

      Hi

Someone did the same thing so i reported it to skype and also checked my email
and they have changed the email address.I had skype credit of £13 GBP so would Skyoe reinburse you with the credit since it happened when i clicked on the link? They quickly changed my password but i also reported it to yahoo as i told them to suspend the email as its a fraudster using it.

Should i call ebay then to sort this out?
Skype has no number and to think they are a communications company.
What a joke.I also sent all the people on my list an email letting them not click any links as my acct was hijacked.

      Regards

      Basel

jeeez... after reading about im convince to get a magic jack since I don't wanna miss with this kind of incident.

change your pass on other computer. Coz if you change it in your own pc probably a keylogger is installed and still they will get the updated accounts.

Debbie, Sorry to hear about your problem.

Here is the antivirus software I've been using for the past 2 years and it has saved
my rear more than once. It checks deep into the root keys and has no problems
    finding where they are hiding.

Good Luck getting it all sorted.

    Have a Great Day!
