Duplicate content on website

Just a quick question.
I would like to know what is considered as duplicate content? like if I have a website and a blog with some of the same content would that be considered as duplicate? or will my about page be considered as duplicate?
Thanks guys.

A guy I chit chat with via online told me there is no duplicate content penalty if that's what you're trying to get to.

Said if you just changed the Title and subheadings, you'd be straight.. You just cant have content on a blog/website 2x.

I would like to hear more on this duplicate content theory too..

With your content being between 2 sites, I don't see a problem though.. Its when you type in one sentence and get 100 results for an exact match in Google.. That's when I think it's frowned upon..

duplicate content is content that's the same as content on another web property (or page on your site). this, also, goes for similar content. so, article spinning tends to not work well...

...and in addition, when you re-write articles from other sites, search engine do latent semantic matching. if they too similar it's deemed as duplicate.

Yes, it probably would be, if they're on the same domain.

There's still no penalty for it, though.

    • Google wants to serve up unique results and does a great job of picking a version of your content to show if your sites includes duplication. If you don’t want to worry about sorting through duplication on your site, you can let us worry about it instead.
    • Duplicate content doesn’t cause your site to be penalized. If duplicate pages are detected, one version will be returned in the search results to ensure variety for searchers.
    • Duplicate content doesn’t cause your site to be placed in the supplemental index. Duplication may indirectly influence this however, if links to your pages are split among the various versions, causing lower per-page PageRank.

    This is generally incorrect.

That's a description, for these purposes, of "syndicated content", not "duplicate content".

I don't believe in dup content ! Its a myth in my opinion. If you have a quality website and offer people what they are looking with big g will be cool with you.If your being shady then they will hit you hard.

I have a football site and i started with dup content and i just changed the images and then posted with good on/off page SEO and its been steady increasing in big g rankings with no real backlinking just quality links from other football sites. Its now a page rank 4 and an alexa 200,021 after 6 months.

Thank you guys for your input, I currently have a blog and am now building a website so I was considering to use a paragraft or two on the site.
Also my about me page will remain the same I don't want to change anything in that.

I've done duplicating the exact same article on my site before. I copy paste the html post and create a new post. Then I delete the previous post, the purpose on that time was so my site updating regularly. But somehow my site got kicked out from first page later on.. :p

I understand about the blog and the website now, but I have an article that I want to submit, and I want to take out some of the content and post on my blog.

    Has anyone done that before?

I have been posting half articles for years. I take the top few paragraphs of an article and post it on multiply or livejournal and then I link back to the original article with a read more >> (title link).

If this is what you are talking about, yes it works and you will not get punished for it.
