Help! My computer is honking..

Hi Warriors,

For some unknown reason, my laptop is making some irritating sounds. Sounds like honking from a car. I don't have any audio or video turned on. Could anyone kindly help me please?

Thanks a lot,
Michael

You are most likely infected by spyware, which causes the honking to be made when you roll over certain banners.

I recommend a scan with Spybot and Ad-aware.

Either that, or it's time for a lie down.

Are you sure it's your laptop?

I ask that because a few weeks ago, my laptop was beeping occasionally. Whether I had the sound on or off, it still beeped. I restarted, ran tests, still beeped. I checked websites for other people that had similar problems. Could be a power supply issue. Narrowed it down to that or something wrong with the hard drive. I think I started a backup too, just in case.

Turns out my cell phone battery was low. It was beeping. But, it was muffled by the case and it sounded like it was coming from the computer.

Thanks, Dan. Yes, I'm 100% sure it's coming from the laptop. I muted it and the noise stopped. So it's from the laptop.

I had this problem once and had my Ipod charging but it was not keeping a connection, so every time it connected I was getting a weird honking sound too.

Thanks, Jeremy. Nope, there's no external device connected other than my mouse.

This happened just the once with my laptop a few weeks ago, when it started making a loud and alarming noise like a goose having it's neck wrung. I can't remember the exact details but it turned out to be a simple battery issue that was very quickly solved.

(I'm assuming you're using Windows XP)

Open the control panel, select 'sounds and audio devices', then select the tab 'sounds'.

Check and see if you have a specific sound scheme set up (change if and see if the honking horn sound goes away). Then go down to 'program events' and test those until you find the honking horn sound.

You highlight an event in the window, and a play button appears below. Click that to hear what sound it makes.

Once you figure out which one is making that particular sound, you can then decide if you want to keep that particular sound for that event, or change it via the 'browse' button.

Let me know what you find out.

Thanks for all the help. I scanned my laptop and no spyware was found. Thank God.

Thanks, Floyd. I don't have a specific sound scheme set up. The sound also mysteriously disappeared around 20 minutes after I've heard it, so I hope that's the last I hear of it.

        Thanks again.

I know you should and probably know about this, but simple as it sounds, some folks get new friends/buddies on their list who employ sounds which you hear when they log on and off etc.
          Just something to check.
