If you are serious about building a business yes. You can use affiliate links, tracking links, but eventually you are going to be limited with what you can do. Really depends on what your actual strategy is.

Having your own site is really essential these days, especially as an affiliate marketer. Gone are the days where you can drive traffic directly to an affiliate link and create good money.

Having a site on the other hand that has relevant content with an email opt-in that you can promote affiliate products from and start building an email list is definitely the way to go.

In my opinion, it's very important to have your own domain, a top level domain that you control. There will be some programs that won't allow you to direct link and you'll need somewhere to host your landing page. Also if you're trying to build a list ( you should be) you'll need somewhere to host your squeeze page.

Lastly, you can't run a successful business without some sort of investment and a $5 domain is fairly reasonable as far as investment costs go.

In the beginning, there is no need to set up a dedicated domain for every product you promote but credibility can be somewhat diminished when you promote from a free host's subdomain.

You should also consider top level domains that re-direct to your affiliate offers.
Having top level domains works better with Directories, Search engines, and numerous other marketing platforms.

It's always better to re-direct. The links look cleaner and are just considered 'better'.

With that being said you can't really define 'better'.

It is not essential to use a custom domain for affiliate marketing, but if you want to make money and have a long term business, then yes it is essential.

The only real answer is yes. It's all about trust at the end of the day. People want to know that you have a brand established and your own space on the web. You have to get serious if you want to make money.

If you are serious about making money online and more specifically affiliate marketing, the answer is yes. There are a few reasons for this. There's a saying that goes, "If you want to compete with the best, you have to do what the best are doing." Having stuff on your own domain has become standard. Beyond that, it's about having control over your content and building a "virtual asset."

Having control over your content is crucial because the amount of content you have out there has a lot to do with how much traffic you get and thus how much money you make. Free sites are very restrictive and limit not only the niches you can go into but the kinds of products you can promote. They can also remove your content at any time Additionally, sites on their own domains gain equity in the search engines, and they can be sold for lump sums of cash like houses on the housing market.

    Good luck,
    Joey
