how not to rely on google...

So the past few weeks I have been thrilled about my traffic. Was having around 700 views a day!! I'm sure this sounds like nothing to some of you, but to a beginner I was very excited. A couple of my keywords moved down a bit in the rankings for some reason, and now I have only had around 200 views a day for the past few days! I'm so disappointed and not really sure where to focus my efforts.

Should I:

a. focus on my seo efforts and try to get my keywords ranking better
b. try to get articles syndicated (I have tried this without much luck
and somewhat gave up.)
c. try to find popular blogs that would allow me to guest post (have
also given this a shot without any luck)
d. some other method I have not yet thought about

I know the best answer to this question is to do all methods, but I am a mom and a teacher. So, time is limited. I really have to focus on one thing at a time to make it worth while. Thanks in advance for any suggestions. The site in my sig is the one I am referring to, if it would help to see it. By the way, I cannot afford to pay for traffic. Everything I have done up to this point has been free. It was liking pulling teeth to force myself to sign up for aweber!

Keep building backlinks to your site and adding new content when you ad
new content make sure you ping the article and if you can rewrite your content and upload it to the big article directories with your link in it.

I add new content about once or twice a week? Is that enough? I will continuously build backlinks. I do this some, but probably not enough. Does the content have to be re-written to be submitted to the article directories? I have heard so many mixed things about that. All my content is unique, I write every word of it. So, is there a reason I could not submit it as is? Thanks.

My business is structured to be 90% (probably higher) not reliant upon Google for its traffic.

This has been achieved by building a substantial list of syndication partners who take my written material and publish it on their websites/blogs and in their subscription ezines and newsletters.

In the beginning I launched my syndicates by publishing all my new content first on my own blog, and then on Ezine Articles, in the likelihood that it would be picked up and republished by niche relevant webmasters.

Later, I realized that I could speed the process up by proactively seeking out and approaching these webmasters myself. On most days I set aside an hour or so to searching for new sources.

For most of my writing, the process I now follow is:
      1. Publish on my own website/blog
      2. Wait for Google to index
      3. Send it to the appropriate syndication list I have accumulated
      4. Publish on Ezine Articles
Every week or so, I reinforce this by searching to discover new webmasters who have picked my articles up from Ezine Articles. I then contact them to ask if they would like to be added to my circulation list. Many of them agree.

As I said, this method accounts for at least 90% of my traffic, the remaining percentile arrives through my pinging and social bookmarking to the articles published on my own real estate.

Google can change its algorithms as often as they wish, my traffic wont be affected.

Thanks for taking the time to leave a great response. Do you change your content at all before sending it to others? If not, do you worry that the article on their site will "outrank" the same article on your own site???? Or do you not care at all about rankings?

Also, how do you go about finding people to use your articles? I have tried to contact a few blogs before and got discouraged because I never heard back from them. I'm sure once you have a reputation, it is not too hard, but getting started finding people to syndicate your articles seems very overwhelming to me. Thanks for any advice!!

The only change I make (if you could call it that) is to edit the final paragraph of the article to turn it into the Author Resource Box. When I write the article, I always include the primary keyword plus the full URL to the main page of my website in the final paragraph, so it's only a matter of adding hyperlinks: one to my site's main page, the second to another related article, plus a call to action.

I never add Resource Boxes that appear to sit 'separate' from the article itself. Having said that, that final paragraph will include a subtle call to action, encouraging click-throughs.

I admit it's a hard slog in the beginning, but it becomes easier with time. It's vital that your articles should never be self-serving sales pitches which no self respecting webmaster will want to publish. Write to entertain and inform, not to sell.

I have a post on my personal blog which you may find useful.

Thanks everyone! I am not looking to ignore google at all, just wanted to feel more secure about the fact that I will always have "x" amount of views coming in. To go from 700 to 200 overnight sucks!

Would anyone like to tell me some details about how to go about getting content syndicated??? As I said earlier, I did post some articles in ezine and a few other article directories, but had little to NO success with it. My efforts with google have been much more productive. With that being said it was really hard to be motivated with the article directories without seeing much results. Any advice that will make my efforts more successful would be appreciated. I have read around the forum and found some useful post on the topic, but still feel a little lost at how to get those articles seen and then syndicated. Thanks everyone!!

Make sure you keep all content on your site unique.

Look at alternative sources of traffic such as building a twitter and facebook following.

Google rankings can dissappear overnight (even if you've done nothing "wrong"), but a social media following where you are adding value can just grow and grow over time.

Asking such a question in this part of the forum will almost certainly end with 90% of the replies being something along the lines of "stick to article marketing/syndication" - so don't expect anyone to tell you to stick with relying on Google.

I would personally suggest you stick to the SEO as you can reap bigger rewards in a shorter time span. Doing what AnniePot does takes years of hard work, something most of us don't have time for - but sure, she's Google proof, but nobody is safe as it is still a business after all.

But yeah, don't expect many people to suggest anything other than something article related in this part of the forum.

Brit, please listen to Annie. She is a real expert on this!

One thing that she didn't mention is the SEO effect that syndication will have. While the primary purpose of syndication isn't backlinks (it's actually targeted eyeballs seeing your content), you'll wind up building them as you do it. And, as an added benefit, you'll be getting more authoritative, more relevant links than you would ever get "blasting" things to different sites or doing futile things like blog commenting. It may not happen overnight, but you will see your site start to move up in the rankings - especially now that Google admits that it's giving relevant backlinks more weight.

The beauty of it is that you'll get traffic from the search engines, but you won't be dependent on them. You've probably seen it mentioned here on WF - people who relied on Google for all (or most) of their traffic, then lost it all with the slightest algorithm tweak. But when you focus on syndication, the traffic you get from the search engines will be a bonus - and you won't lose sleep over what some button-pusher is doing over at Google headquarters

You are absolutely right Nicole - a grave omission on my part; I did only tell half the story..

As Nicole has said, you can and will acquire some excellent backlinks from authority, highly relevant websites when they publish your content on their blogs/websites. In some instances, this may be lost if they only publish your content in newsletters circulated by email, more and more newsletters are being published online with an email sent to subscribers whenever a new edition goes live- hence the link juice continues.

You need somewhere between 50,000 and 100,000 PR-0 backlinks to equal one backlink from an authority, context relevant website! And just to put things further into perspective, if you follow the train of thought which promotes article spinning and article mass-submitting to thousands of completely worthless article directories, for every thousand directories you mass-submit to, maybe only one or two hundred (often far less), will actually publish your submission. Do the math--how many submissions will it take to achieve the low estimate 50,000 PR-0 backlinks?

You mentioned the far more important aspect - and threw in the exact steps to take, to boot! To me, the backlinks are kind of an afterthought in it all anyways. Sure, they're nice to get, but you're getting alot of other, bigger benefits in the process. So, maybe the links are 1/4 the story, instead of half??

I think you should do all the things you mentioned and also include social media marketing like Twitter, fb and G+. These are very powerful tools to get people to your site and not just traffic. Targeted traffic which keeps coming back in my opinion has more worth than traffic from google
